Title: Ghost inspired lawn art.
Post by: Kiwijeff on November 30, 2016, 06:34:19 PM
I got inspired reading about Ghosts Dodge cowl.
After having a wee clean up down my driveway, I wondered what to do with my rusty car junk, and thought, I've got enough stuff to build a car.
I'm not into a full build, got too much going on, but I figured I could weld a heap of rusty crap together, park it on my front lawn, and light it up.
I have a spare battery, so I could wire up headlights, tail lights, and go over the top with Christmas lights.

So here's some pics of the rusty crap.
Details will come, as I nut it out.

I have 37 Chevy truck front and rear end, 1928 Cadillac body, 4x2 T Bucket chassis, one hot rod headlight and alloy stand and plenty of scrap steel.
Only things I need, are old v8, grille she'll, and one six stud wheel, to bolt to Chev truck diff.
I have a Morris Minor steering wheel, they look like a large banjo wheel, and two Morris Minor seats.

I don't have a lot of time to put this together though, it looks like there may be a house move in a month or two, and I'm uncertain of whether I'll have a decent shop to work in.

Thanks for reminding me of the Morris Minor steering wheel. I had a '60 traveler, woody. That is another one I should never have sold. So much "yard art" here it looks like a wrecking yard. :o

Will this be Christmas themed?

Sure will, but in a budget.
I keep getting more ideas, but really can't spare any money to throw at it.
I want to light it up, and I'd love to put a life sized Santa in it.

Jeff, it looks like a few more parts and you might have a builder! ;)

That was the original idea, when I got the body off a friend. It was huge, so I deleted the front doors. Originally was thought to be a Packard, but turned out someone had rebodied the original Packard.
I've had it in the corner for over ten years.

We have some Santa red going on.
It really needed a white base, but I didn't have any.

That would suck.
I have a dog park straight over the road from me, and it's real noisy first thing on a Sunday morning.
I'll bet you don't have to put up with that sort of pest though.

If I put that in my front yard somebody would ask to buy it........or steal it!

Even in this very rural part of the West the county has a rule that you can not have unregistered vehicles on your property. It comes with a $100 a day fine. I owe them millions! ;) The kicker is that if you can see my junk you've trespassing for a couple of miles. 8)
Title: Re: Ghost inspired lawn art.
Post by: Kiwijeff on December 13, 2016, 01:28:10 PM
I don't understand how they can make laws, that dictate what you can have on your own property.
If they tried to tell me I couldn't have an unregistered vehicle on MY property, I'd sell up and move.
I should go take a pic of a neighbors back yard from just around the corner.
It's a total junkyard. The local council have been wanting it cleaned up for years, but because it's behind a fence, there's nothing they can do about it.
The other neighbors also hate it. It devalues the whole street.

Santa's Cadillac is not looking like it'll be finished in time, I've got no time left, as I've other commitments.
I may be able to work on it in the evenings, maybe I can press gang some guys to help. ;D

I don't understand how they can make laws, that dictate what you can have on your own property.
It's pretty simple, If you have money left they want it. Fees and fines are taxes.  :o

Tax his land, tax his wage,
Tax his bed in which he lays.
Tax his tractor, tax his mule,
Teach him taxes is the rule.
Tax his cow, tax his goat,
Tax his pants, tax his coat.
Tax his ties, tax his shirts,
Tax his work, tax his dirt.

Tax his chew, tax his smoke,
Teach him taxes are no joke.
Tax his car, tax his grass,
Tax the roads he must pass.

Tax his food, tax his drink,
Tax him if he tries to think.
Tax his sodas, tax his beers,
If he cries, tax his tears.

Tax his bills, tax his gas,
Tax his notes, tax his cash.
Tax him good and let him know
That after taxes, he has no dough.

If he hollers, tax him more,
Tax him until he’s good and sore.
Tax his coffin, tax his grave,
Tax the sod in which he lays.

Put these words upon his tomb,
“Taxes drove me to my doom!”
And when he’s gone, we won’t relax,
We’ll still be after the inheritance tax.

There's been some progress today.
Also started on a grill, outer plywood.

Title: Re: Ghost inspired lawn art.
Post by: Kiwijeff on December 15, 2016, 04:36:43 PM
Thanks Tom.
Moose,  I will put a red light on front of grill probably, if I get one for free.
Just don't have any cash to throw at this.
I've spent $16 on two cans of red paint, and the g friend spent ten on a leaky blow up Santa. I didn't want a good one, as I needed to stuff it.
To many sharp edges, and it's to windy down here by the sea.

Ghost, I always intended on building this car, but other things came along.
My buddy who gave me the body, did so on the condition that if I didn't use it, it's to go back to him.
I won't get it done.
Once my tour is up, I'll probably go back to traveling for work.
Told my flatmate I'd help her for five years, it's coming up to seven, and hopefully I'll make it ten.

Thanks Moose.
I'm hoping to get some lights today.
There's two big displays a few doors down either side of my place, and while I'm not into competing with them, the rubber neckers who are out every night checking out the people's homes who are into this, want to see it lit up.
Someone's going to give me some today, if I'm lucky.

It's almost outer control.
Yesterday I got the mad idea to build an engine block from wood.
A V engine, that would take two of the Holden six heads, which would give me a real odd looking V12.
That would have the local gear heads wondering. ;D

I'll probably have room soon. ::)  But the darn thing would probably get airborne on it's own around here.  Glider with an engine?  I would end up getting in over my head and have to try it out ;)

Jeff, be sure and post a pic when you get finished!  I have my eyes out for a Cad grill to go in my shell. I seen the one that (Ex-Derilic, Nebraska?) Was building on the Hamb last year (34 chevy coupe build) really cool looking grill.

Or you could cut half the wings of one side, and bury it nose first, into the ground on an angle, so it looks like it had crashed.
That would take up way less room, horizontally.

Steve, I've seen Exderilics Chevy, but don't remember seeing a grill.

Here's the finished grill, except for silver paint.
I used what I had in the shed, the blue was just to seal it up, on account of all the rain we've been having.
The grill ornament is off a seventies Chrysler Valiant.

John, the more I add to it, the more it looks that way.
I've a 4x2 T Bucket chassis in the shed, behind my 28 Hudson project.
I sold it to a mate, but he's not going to use it.
Last I asked, he didn't want to see it back to me, and is happy to let it sit in my shed.
If I had some spare cash, I'd make him another offer.
I'd be happy to turn this thing into a roller, but for now, I've other priorities.

Thanks guys, it's even fooling people driving past.
One guy stopped yesterday, while I was brush painting the plug leeds blue, and asked if I was building it for the Street. I could tell he had no idea it had no chassis.
Now that I've painted over the rust, people have no idea, but the rust will come through the paint soon enough.
I'm starting to think it's to flash, and I may move it into the back yard, where no one will see it, cept me and friends.

So........ what to do with it.........

Build the Damn V12, that's what!

I made a start a few days ago, and keep forgetting to take pics.
Got a little carried away with the size of the block, it's big, and it has to be strong to support the weight of the heads.

I get pics up in the next day or so.
Then I'm going to try and sell the whole thing.

My mate dropped the head in last night, so I cleaned it up, and gave it a little rattle can red.
Trying to bolt these things to the wooden block was entertaining. I've got it balanced, but it's not real secure, so I'll have to figure that out.

I'm thinking I'll make plates to bock off the inlet and outlet ports on the outsides of the heads, and only put exhaust pipes on outside.
I'll make up some sort of valley manifold for carburetors.
