Title: Chevrolet 490 Exhaust system
Post by: Chevy490 on February 25, 2016, 12:35:32 AM
Anyone know how far towards the rear of the car the exhaust system is supposed to extend on a 1919 Chevrolet Touring Car?
My 490's goes about halfway back to the muffler and that is it. My service manual shows nothing. I am wondering if a tail pipe is supposed to extend all the way to the rear.  Since it is an open car the danger of CO poisoning is relatively low, however it is a little smelly.
I want to keep everything bone stock. In any event if I replace the exhaust system I will have to have a  muffler shop make pipes (I don't have an exhaust pipe bender) and fit a muffler that is as close to original as possible.  Thanks

Chevy 490 I have no idea where you are located, If i did i might be able to help.Second there is no way the exhaust ended at the end of the muffler in the middle of the car It would have had a tail pipe that exteded to the bumper under it in most cases But most cases past the main part of the body.

Thanks for the input.  I will try and find a fellow 490 owner and ask them. Interestingly on many very old cars the exhaust pipe does not extend all the way to the rear of the car. My '29 Ford Model A has a stock exhaust system that ends a few inches forward of the rear axle.  (It is short about 2 feet from the rear bumper)

It might have stopped there back when new, and safety wasn't an issue, but if it was mine I would extend it until the exhaust clears up in the car. I hate exhaust smell in a car I know it's kinda weird since my hobby is smelly cars.
