I'm leaving after work and headed to spend Thanksgiving with my sister's family and my 86 year old Ma.

Happy Thanksgiving! It's my favorite Holiday because it is about Family, food, and being home. My sons, my daughter in law, my grandson, and my wife will be it this year. My wife and I are the old folks. It wasn't always that way and there are wonderful memories. :)

That's my only misgiving about Thanksgiving and the holiday season. As good as things are and as lucky and fortunate that I am, this time of year always makes me a little melancholy thinking about seaons past and wishing I could relive those memories.

Up here in Canada we had our thanksgiving in late October............think I am trying to still digest all that turkey i ate and the turkey sandwiches over the following couple of weeks.

Your Black Friday event has spilled over to here and we now have RED THURSDAY AND FRIDAY for people to blow their hard earned $$$$ on stuff..

I try to hold those memories dear while helping my Boys to build new ones. Right now we are in the family room watching "A Christmas Story" and laughing at our own Holiday adventures. Yep I wish I wasn't the older generation but those before me left me with a full load of Holiday Cheer to pass on. ;D  God bless us every one! 8)

Well change of plans ;D We were supposed to have Thanksgiving at my sister's but with the storm up here they lost power.  Can't cook a turkey in an electric stove with no power so the turkey, all the fixings and all the family will be coming over to my house.  We got about 8" of snow but still have power and a natural gas stove :)  Should be a great time!!!

"Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother's house we go!" It's pretty hard to convert electric ranges to wood. This will be a special memory to add to your collection. ;)

My sons just left to carry out a Thanksgiving tradition that they started with some friends when in high school. They go shooting a couple of miles from here out in the hills. There are 8 or 10 of them in their late 20s to early 30s and have been doing this since the first one got a driver's license in 1997. I would love to go with them but that's not the tradition. ;D

Just got done watching the parade with my little guys. The ham and turkeys are already in. Stuffing made, potatoes cooking. Expecting about 15 people plus my 6, there's gonna be a full house.
You're right Sixball, my folks left me with some great memories, now I have to do the same thing for my boys.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!! :)

Just got through eating turkey, ham, and all the fixins.  We got my mother out of the home by putting her wheel chair in the back of a van, with her in it.  What a trouper.  Never missed a Thanksgiving with family, and she is already talking about doing the same for Christmas.

Talk about memories, it is never the same but each year we are fortunate enough to make more.

Thank you guys for sharing...

All went well, four generations enjoying a great meal and time together.  The wife only had a couple of hours to stress out about getting the meal ready.  Didn't have time to clear out the garage Ghost.  That tradition will have to wait for Christmas :D

Tom just read your post about the snow and your sister not having power.  I'm sure that it will turn out alright and you will have another great memory to tell. Is it unusual for you all to have snow this time of year? We awakened this morning with a light dusting

Not unusual at all.  The problem was it was a heavy wet snow and was knocking down trees and branches taking the power out.  My sister has a generator but it won't power the electric stove.  It all worked out great, I really like it when we all get together over here.  Usually I clean out the garage and turn the heat on so we can set up 3 tables end to end and all sit together.  Just didn't have the time to do that after I came in from snow clean up.

One of the last things my younger son said when he left this evening so he could be at work in the morning to open the store was that he was glad that O'Reilly Auto Parts didn't do Black Friday.

Well it's almost 10:00 PM and I'm feeling well enough to try coffee and pie. ;D We finished the kitchen remodel just in time for today. Everything went well and the head cook was happy. 8) Life is good. :)

A quick, true, story from Thanksgiving...............
My youngest son, Jake, is nine, he is on the fence regarding Santa Claus. He asked my wife Thanksgiving night if Santa really brought all of the presents Christmas morning? My wife looked at him and thought, it's best to come clean. She said "No, Jake, mom and dad buy all the presents for Christmas". Jake looked at her for a second and shouted "I knew it, I knew it!! You buy all the presents and then Santa puts them around the tree!!" My wife just smiled and remained silent. That's my boy, the eternal optomist ;)

I NEVER told my mother I didn't believe in Santa even after I became Santa. Now I'm a Grandsanta for the first time.

When I was eight we were having Christmas Eve at my cousins' house. We were sure Santa was coming so we were in a bed room looking out the window when a few houses down the street we saw Santa coming out of the Miller's house. He was coming straight for us carrying a heavy sack. We ran into the living room just as my uncle opened the door for Santa. Behind the beard and wig I could tell it was Windy Miller, our mailman. In his bag he had presents for all five cousins. Mine was a Lionel train set. It made perfect sense to me that Santa could be the mailman the rest of the year. It didn't shake my belief even a little bit but I was always nicer to his daughter Janice after that night. I still have the train.

Congratulations Grandsanta!! Those Lionels will become a family heirloom, but 10 ;0 years from now will not be able to tell the story. Great memories, huh?.......how's Janice these days? ;)

Chopper, That really is a great story. They want to believe and the spirit of Christmas with all of it's nuances is a good thing to believe
in. Just because we have to take a turn at being Santa doesn't mean Santa is not real. My son's never figured out how the presents got to their grandparents house even when they were in high school. It was a complicated plan before online shopping. ;D

The things we do to keep the children's belief's alive,  when my children was 3 and 5 years old I hired a Santa and Mrs. Clause to deliver package on Christmas Eve. We set around and sang Christmas carols and they entertained the kids for a couple hours and then left. After they were gone the oldest said next year he was going outside and looking on the roof to see Rudolf and I thought how can I pull that one off.

My mother, to her dying day, swore that when she was about 7 or 8 she heard a noise outside and when she looked she saw a sleigh and reindeer in the air. She never came off that story. 22 days til the fat man arrives :) It's a good group of guys and gal here.

Post by: sixball on December 03, 2014, 12:57:17 PM
I agree, this is a great group. Thanks for allowing me to hang out. To satisfy your curiosity: I had not been very nice to Janice until I found out he dar was Santa because those were pretty mean times and she was not "cute". I have not seen her since 1959 and as with many girls if she grew up to look like her mother she is still not "cute". I was so superficial back then. :o

Some of my best Christmas memories are the many road trips from Texas to California to spend the Holidays  with my mom's family. In an old car, my dad liked MOPARs, loaded with gifts traveling the two lane highways through all the decorated towns along the way. We sang Christmas songs in the spots where there were no radio stations. When the snow was bad we traveled in small caravans so if someone got stuck they would have help. You would sometime see the same people at gas stations and cafes or broken down by the road. Life was great! :)
Title: Re: Happy Thanksgiving
Post by: chopper526 on December 03, 2014, 01:21:54 PM
::)I am still superficial, Sixball. Are you saying Janice had a "butter" face? I am probably a little younger than you and I probably grew up in a more urban area (Philadelphia) but things sure did seem alot simpler growing up, and alot more fun. I wish I could get that point accross to my kids.
Title: Re: Happy Thanksgiving
Post by: 62131 on December 03, 2014, 06:28:40 PM
Chopper I'm going to take a stab at the butter face you used to described Janice. You could look at everything Janice had -but her- face. Or something like that. ;D
Title: Re: Happy Thanksgiving
Post by: sixball on December 03, 2014, 08:06:45 PM
I'm thinking "butt or face" like you couldn't tell the difference. At first her parents thought she was twins. ::) This isn't right she was a girl and we just didn't like them yet. She was probably a normal looking little girl but she didn't have a 22 or a 410 so was of no interest to us. ;)
I remember her dad better. He was the rural route delivery guy. Sometimes we'd see him along side the road sorting/reading mail and shooting jack rabbits in fields with his US Postal Service issue 1917 Smith & Wesson .45 ACP revolver. He was good with it. When my Granddad in California sent post cards somewhere in the writing he would say"Hi WINDY". Granddad grew up in the area and knew Windy. ;D

Not bad at all Ed  8 points is better than 2  you must pat yourself on the back. I used one of those compound bows 80 lb and after about one month of shooting three times a day. It was like getting slower and slower to the point that even these old tired eyes could follow the arrow all the way to the target  I could even see it veer right or left. I gave it up it was way way to slow and then the other day a good friend of mine shows up with these EXOCET cross bows  Now let me say this about that  man they are fast and furious. I think i should have one of those But my hat is off to anyone that can clean kill at 30 yards with a compound bow  vette59jdwl

I'm not a hunter, and you can't shoot them where I live, but I get deer all year walking right through my backyard. My dogs go nuts. One of my dogs almost caught up with one a couple weeks ago. I don't know what she would have done had she caught up. Probably would have had her butt handed to her.

One truck did get some monor damage, but thankfully Brian was not injured. Not a good way to finish out the week.

Happy Thanksgiving all, I went to my sister's house. I surprised her early the day before.  Lucky too, she was sad as it is the first year without Ma.  I was bitter sweet.

Good news, I drove the 30 bout 230  miles round trip without a single problem.  Perfect weather to. sunny and 70ish.

I hope you guys enjoyed your families.
