Title: Bob Merchant's '33 Canopy Express
Post by: Cool53 on April 25, 2014, 07:37:33 PM
Bob's had this for 55 years! But it was in a pile in the corner when I first saw it. I cut the front frame rails off and rebuilt them from the last guy, fabbed up a front suspension, manual rack, created a really cool brake booster/master, got the steering to fit inside the tight Chevy frame rails. I warmed over and warmed up a 400 Bob had, rebuilt a turbo 350 for it, made a crossmember, got the Chevy tilt column to fit, did some work on the rear, made a driveshaft, and installed a hitch, so he could tow his 1963 130" front engine dragster. Don Beals has done a bunch of work on it, as has Dennis Pierce and Larry Lehman. Bill Shepard took the fenders that every other bodyman wanted to throw away and hammered them until they were perfect. He also did a lot of other work on the car. Danny Sullivan painted it, and Bob's wife Dianne cracked the whip. It had to be done this year or he was going to have to sleep outside. That's my wife Margaret sitting in the driver's seat and Big Bob standing outside. I think Bob's going to have some fun this year.

The end result of all the work from you and your friends turned a really nice looking street rod. Great job.

That's beautiful.  I guess they were used by street vendors to hawk there fruit or vegetables from there farms, Is the headlight bar really close to the grille?

Very cool ride.  You don't see many of these around.

Mmmmm...mmmm...nice car!

I guess if Bob has had it for 55 years it was only 26 years old when he got it.

I'd be curious to know how many of those that Chevy made originally...can't be that many.  Something really different from your run-of-the-mill car.  Not that any of the Chevy's are run-of-the-mill you understand!  :)

Jef

Bob has a great looking ride there. As you know back in the day the Chevy truck always used the sheet metal from the previous years car (I guess GM didn't want to waste any left over parts inventory) so I looks just like a 32 Car minus the hood doors from the front. Great job.

Might have a shot at production numbers if we knew the fisher body job number on the firewall plate.
