Over the years Chevy has had a number of great engines. What do you think is the best one and what makes it the best.

I grew up with the 283 and also heard over the years that it was the best engine made. But the more recent and still going strong 350 (5.7) has to be number one...it's probably in more hotrods than any other single engine.
They make so many after market parts for the 350 that I bet you can put one together without using a single GM part! The 350 is cheaper to rebuild than a GM 4 cyl engine!
Feel confident that the LS series engine is going to the next most popular engine and it's beginning to make it's move....the HP potential is phenomenal.

You got me thinking.....we could use the engines as member group names..Newbie = 4 cyl, Jr Member = 6 cyl, Full Member = V8, Sr Member = V8 Big Block, Hero Member = ??? (stuck on this one)

The L88 was once considered to be the ultimate top of the heap big block. You couldn't do much better than that if you wanted to rule the streets......Ask me how I know 8)

I went with a 283 in my car. I've owned several from stock to modified and was always happy with them. My car won't be that heavy and I plan to drive it a lot so I went with the 283 for gas mileage. I'd agree with Ed that if your going to build one that there are more parts and accessories for a 350 than any other engine.

I have for the most part played around with the old reliable small block chevy, but if I had my want list I still like the 283 for being able to get old school horsepower out of it. I had a few that would turn 7 grand with no problem. And of course let's not forget the 302 engine from the 69 z 28 camaro.( boooYeah) that thing would run right out of the box. wish I had one or two.

The '69 350 that is in my car is the best! ;D
