'28 front crossmember needed
« on: April 02, 2014, 12:01:08 PM »
Does any one have a '28 Chevy front crossmember they can spare? The frame I have didn't have one. I may end up building one but it would be nice to have a stock one to use to square everything up and get all the measurements for mounts.

Sixball, i just went down to the shop and looked, sorry if it was I cut into it. Not much left.

I remembered a friend just picked up a frame so I went by his house and grabbed a quick pic. He's at work right now, but if it looks similar I'll be glad to do more checking for you.

Thanks, I'll tell him.  The farmer he got it from thought it was a ford, but when he got it out he was sure it was chevy. He had no idea what year.

I guess no help here.

Do the GM archives have the measurements for the front of the frame?  If not, then I guess you will need to find someone with a '28 frame, unless they are the same perhaps for the previous or later year or two.

I have a '29 frame but it is different. My friend has a '28 pickup I can measure. I just was thinking that so many Chevy frames get cut up to put IFS and Ford front axles in that there might be some laying around. ;D

I'll try to get some pictures tomorrow as well as measurements. I was told on another site that '28 & '29 are the same as they were making ready for the 6 cylinder in '28. I have a '29 frame and that crossmember would not fit this frame. So maybe it's not a '28 as I was told.

The first two pictures should be 28 chevy, and the second set should be 27 chevy if this helps.

Thanks Ghost, It's hard to tell. The '27 looks like the steering box is very near to the rear front spring mount. Mine is like that. I'll get some pictures of what I have.

The pictures of your frame look more like a 27 than 28. The reason I say this is because the height of your frame rails is rather narrow, and the rear engine cradle is 27 chevy. If you look at the pictures I sent the 28 rear cradle is a little different and flatter at the top...John

John, You are right. The engine cradle on my frame is like the '27. Thanks! Tom

Here's the last set I picked up yesterday. The rusty one and the cast piece are the new ones. They don't match the holes in my frame either but I can make do with these and a little time.
