Title: You guys Gotter check this out.
Post by: Kiwijeff on January 16, 2017, 05:44:27 AM
I just read this thread on the Hamb.
Guy builds a 32 Chev hiboy, and rubs through the paint, to the original paint.
I'm not a fan of fake patina, but this is a whole nuther ball game.

Please ignore the usual Hamb drama from the purist.

He said he would send me the details/links to build, as the engine isn't Hamb friendly.
I'm curious to see the details.

Wow...Talk about a dent and rust free body.

Turns out, Don the owner, is a member here.
He sent me links to his build pics, and I've asked him to add them to this thread.

I'd never considered bringing back old paint, but how cool would it be, to be able to say your old car is still rocking its og paint.

Wow, I missed this earlier. I've brought the shine back out on many 50s-60s original paint cars, but never something that old....or removed primer to get to it.   That is a hell of a lotta work, very nice job he did there. Looks great! :)

What a sound body. How cool that it got to someone who realized how special it is. My first car was a '38 Ford coupe. It could have bee cleaned up like that but I ruined it. :(

I tried sanding off the flat black I sprayed and it went straight to the original primer. If I sanded any more it went straight to metal. I was trying to bring back the rust. Didn't work.
I had no idea even primer was left on it. Was all rusty when I bought it.

Thanks Kiwijeff for posting my '32 !

I hang around here for info, but haven't posted. I don't want to start a build thread (too much time involved), but I will post some info on the car, give links to photo galleries, and answer any questions anyone may have.

The car took 1,950 hours, ALL by me, except upholstery and exhaust. The body you see is THE original 1932 body, even the frame has the original paint production stamps below the drivers door ! I like proper proportions, and original parts modified to blend with the car.

Yes, it does have a diesel and a Ford transverse front suspension ..................... sorry.

•   Original paint, except for hood, 1"cowl patch, and chop seams
•   All original steel body
•   Chopped 3 inches
•   ALL Wood structure replaced with steel
•   Reproduction wood top rails and slats
•   All original exterior lighting, modified with modern internals
•   Original steering wheel, park brake, rear view mirror, door handles/trim, heater, etc……………
•   Frame constructed with the original 1932 frame rails (factory stamp below driver door)
•   Cummins 4BT (3.9L) engine, Holset HX30W turbo, intercooled, modified pump, etc……………
•   M5OD-R2 Transmission
•   8.8 Differential, 31 spline axles, Yukon gears/locker, etc…………….
’32 Ford style front suspension, Super Bell, Posie, Pete & Jakes, etc……………….

Very cool ride, you should be proud.  I went through all the pics  Nice job documenting everything.  I like your work on replacing the wood and on the chassis.  Thanks for posting the info and pics.

That is very nice. Thanks for the detailed build pictures especially the wood replacement. That is something that worries me about my '26 roadster build. I know I have a lot less of it compared to a close car but I also have less skill. The original paint thing has me thinking too. Mine still has a lot of original paint but maybe not enough.
I bet the turbo Cummins is a hand full. A friend has one in a rat pickup. The engine doesn't know it's hooked to anything!

Very cool. Just found this after my buddy left. He has been talking about building a hot rod with the Cummings 4TB for 2yrs. Sent him the link. He says "Hell ya, that's what I've been telling you!". He loves the 33-35 Chevy body style best, but has watched over my build. He doesn't have that much time to redo wood or replace. So has been looking at fiberglass bodies.  Likes the 33-34 plymouth next (all steel) , then the 33-34 Ford in that order. I guess I'll see what he comes up with after his upcoming house remodel?

Don, glad to see you chimed in.
Your car is too cool not to have its own thread here, and you provided enough links to keep the guys happy.
As I said in the private message, the guys here will not judge you for running a diesel engine.

Now go out and enjoy that car.

3,800 miles in three months, gets driven almost daily !

A photographer rented the car for a photo shoot tomorrow, should be an interesting day ! I'll post some photos from the shoot (models involved) !

Nothing spectacular, kinda boring actually. Captured a few shots on my own, nothing close or very good.

Awesome car, good pics. 8)

Photography tip;
Try pics with the sun at your back. You may be able to brighten those up a bit with some computer editing.

not with those two ladies being in the center of every picture.

What I can never figure out is why the car magazines are full of cars and women draped all over them .

The women covered in tattoos are highly undesirable, look more like biker chicks.

Guess I never got into THAT look.  I just wanted to see the high lites of the cars.

Very gangster.

Sorry, I've been studying American history lately.
I watched an old black n white movie about Machine gun Kelly. Lol.
Also watched a cool documentary on Jessie James, but that didn't have old cars in it.

Funny thing about models covered in tattoos, I've been a tattoo artist for over thirty years, and I'm not a fan of heavily tattooed models.
