Title: Need some help identifying this Chevrolet
Post by: SpeedHunter on August 01, 2013, 05:38:12 PM
Hi everyone. I was pointed to this forum from another great online community by Tom(TFoch).
Can someone here help me ID this http://imgur.com/a/wgFpO ? the serials read 4641150 , then 348532 , B98 and the Chevrolet logo with 1. , I already made a thread on another site and someone pointed out that the engine is made in Feb 9, 1928 the problem is with the chassis and radiator since they dont seem to fit the the year , any help in finding out what model it is?

Hi Speedhunter,
Glad you signed up.  Hope you enjoy the site.  I hope the Chevy guys on here can help you identify the chassis and grill.

First off welcome aboard.

I believe the number you pictures are showing is the casting number which would make it a 1928 engine but from what I can see from your pictures the car may be earlier  than that. Do you have any other info or pictures?

The frame and springs look to be pretty heavy duty plus the frame appears to be cracked and patched  which might indicate some hard usage such that a truck might experience.  The radiator shell looks to have a different profile than any Chevy that I'm familiar with the top inner corners of the opening being more rounded that the  of the typical Chevy style through the years plus what appears to be some sort of louver system to control air flow through the radiator . Also from what I can see in the pictures it looks like the engine mounts could have been fabricated to accommodate the Chevy engine . So what does this all mean? Possible export  or limited production vehicle or one that was fabricated from bits and pieces from some other make with the addition of a Chevy badge  to represent the engine. Got me stumped. Be sure to let us know what you come up with.

the frame is indeed cracked in one place and patched , it was build in a house so as not to be confiscated by the communists or so ive heard so i dont think the chassis is complete ,  as for its usage , it was later modified to cut wood ( such a waste ).
I'll post closer pictures with the the engine mounts so you can see if it was really modified.
Possible export? probably since im not in the US ; Limited production , i wish but not likely and i really dont think it was fabricated from bits since some very old people said they saw it almost complete when it was built in the house.I was hoping the serials could help me track down the original body model and how it looked like.
On a side note here since you're an expert , how much is it worth in this state and how much would it cost to restore it ?

There’s never a good answer to those questions…. It’s all relative. The value is affected by a number of factors but is usually mostly influenced by the basic law of supply and demand. If everybody wants one and you have the only one then it might be worth a lot of money and if the opposite is true then the value would be far less. Add to this things such as historical significance or sentimental value and the answer becomes even more clouded. In the case of your vehicle where we really don’t even know for sure what it is I don’t think I could even give you a good ballpark answer.  As for the cost of restoration we have a similar situation. How rare and available are parts, will you do the work yourself or do you have to sublet it, do you want a show car or just a fun car. Those are the things that I take into consideration when I’m trying to come up with an idea of what a project will cost or to set a budget and even then I find that most of the time I’m still not very close to my estimate when the project is finished. For me It’s usually a labor of love and the monetary considerations are secondary.

Updating with more pictures as requested here http://imgur.com/a/5YNDE , sorry for the late reply i had some stuff to do.
On the steering wheel thing ( i dont know the english translation for it ) is written 258080 ( thats my guess , its pretty rusty ) then the symbol which look like a steering wheel and then an 8 , after the text reads PATENTED "Jaco..*" SAGINAW MICH or HICH [  maybe jacob? , im kinda bussy and dont have time to look it up sorry :( ] . On the other part ( dont know the translation again ) H2137 is written.
I've also inculded better shots of the radiator , and because of an accident the bowtie loggo fell off .

I'm not looking for an exact sum or any special circumstances like me being the only one with the part in question , im looking for approximate value  , i know it cant value much , but still i dont want my father giving it to the first person giving 100$ for it ( unless of course its worth lee than that ) and its value be 1000$. And at least i know what the engine is for sure , how much would it be worth ?
On a side note , first i taught it was a 1928 Chevrolet National Series AB and i searched a bit for that model and found various prices for it mostly 14,000$ but then i found this fella here http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/dealer/chevrolet/national/1579308.html , whats so special about it?

About restoration , i dont really think i would build it as a show car , just as a fun car and so is restoring it , i will do it personally along with my father if i find out what it is and if its worth it
