Title: For the ammo reloaders out there
Post by: EDNY on October 13, 2022, 08:10:20 AM
Anyone that reloads (ie competition shooters) knows how hard it is to locate primers and especially small pistol primers.  With the high crime rates firearm purchases for self protection have created a demand for ammo. To meet ammo demands ammo manufacturers are only selling small amounts of excess primers with the bulk of primers going to ammo production.

Have been seeing some primers for sale online but at two or three times the price they sold for 2 years ago. To add to that cost, there is a shipping cost, sales tax and Haz Mat fees.  The Haz Mat fee is the same for 1K or 10K primers but most sellers limit purchases to 1K.

Came across this March 2022 article discussing a new primer manufacture in Texas...maybe some relief is coming:

Maybe some relief this spring from Expansion Ammunition. What a great business decision! Glad I have a couple of flintlocks!  ::)

I search web sites and sporting good stores almost daily looking for primers, they are hard to find but sometimes I get lucky and run across a store that has gotten some in. But the price is higher than I'm willing to pay sometimes.

I read an article somewhere about making your own primers. What a tedious process and what would be the success rate?
It would tend to get you to make every shot count. Years ago I heard about guys in Mexico reloading 22 rimfire using ground up match heads.  It is strange that we have to solve problems that should not exist.

I use this site to notify me when a vendor has primers available...Note: You have to be prompt responding to their notifications.

I looked up making primers and came across a ton of videos. Might come in handy in a pinch. It would take the fun out of shooting a lot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnXnDjazqmk (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnXnDjazqmk)
