A question of bushings.........
« on: March 04, 2016, 04:33:04 PM »
I am running 1-3/4" leaf springs front and rear. I am using new brass bushings on the front eyes (as original) and original size (I forget the part #) rubber bushings in the rear eyes. Here's my problem: the rubber bushings were so tight to fit in with the shackles. They fit great in the eye and great in the shackle, but try to put the two together.....TIGHT. So much so, that I had to drill the hole in the rubber bushing larger and shave a little of the outside of the bushing away. So, what did you guys use (rubber or polyurathane)? How did you install them/ Any tips?
I put these in a couple years ago and they were ok for the time-being, but now that I am ready to start driving this regulary I think I need to replace the bushings.     Thanks, guys!
Tighten it up til it strips, then back it off a quarter turn

Chopper on the rubber bushings I give them a coat of Vaseline, push them into the eye of the leaf spring, then coat the tube same, press it into the rubber(using C-clamp vise grips if nessy). Then a little on the edges of the rubber and if tight between shackles, I use the floor jack to press into place. Your type maybe different?

As to what I use, urethane. Todays rubber just does not last. The polyurethane bushings usually come with a little tube of special grease. I got mine from Prothane co.
