Ed, maybe I don't understand the bill, or I am reading it wrong...or I'm just plain stupid, but isn't it already legal to produce kit cars?

Yes but this would allow them to be sold fully assembled and running. Not really a kit then is it

So at this point if you build one you can not sell it? Or is it about making a business out of putting them together? What about all those fiberglass Cobras? More than likely by making whatever this law says legal it will make something we do now illegal.

As I read it , it would allow companies to produce "Turn Key Replicas" which are not "Kit Cars" I kit car is something you purchase as individual parts and then you have to assemble it or have someone assemble it whereas a Turn Key is ready to drive off the show room. This would all a small business to build and market cars that resemble something like a Model A and sell it as a complete car ready to drive just like the big boys like GM and Ford do. I don't see how that would have any bearing on the existing kit car market or the kit cars that are already on the road. It would allow someone who doesn't have the time or knowledge and equipment to build their own car to get involved in the hobby and also allow small businesses to be established to build them. Sounds good on the surface but that depends on how the politicians twist things around to benefit the government more than the consumer.

I don't get it. I thought it WAS legal to sell them already. What about the company that made Model A's and the '57 T'Birds out of fiberglass using a Ford drivetrain (the company name escapes me). I also believe there is a company making late '50's fiberglass Corvettes. There are probably more, I am sure, I am just not in the loop.

I believe the so called turn key replica cars that are now on the market are produced by companies who manufacture the components to build the car and who will put one together for you on a made to order basis. It's like having Chip Foose build you a car using his components. It's basically no different than having the local rod shop build you a car. There is no inventory or dealer structure in place . There may have been companies in the past who were able to offer something close to "Turn Key" cars but I don't think that it would still be possible under the latest government rules regarding Automobile manufacturers. I think what the legislation is focused on is allowing a company to build cars and to develop an inventory that could be offered for sale to anyone who walks through the door wanting to buy one without commissioning a specific build . As it is now if you manufacture vehicles for general consumption you have to meet all of the federal guidelines that are currently in effect such as safety, emissions and fleet mileage requirements. As the proposed legislation states it is an attempt to remove the one size fits all mentality that is now in place.Below is a statement from one of the popular so called Turn Key Kit cars. As stated above they do not manufacture cars but can supply a shop everything you need to build the car...I guess you could get bogged down in semantics
For as many people who choose to build their own car, there are people interested in purchasing a completed car. At Factory Five we do not build completed cars. Over the years we have worked with a good number of excellent hot rod and custom car builders. These shops specialize in starting with the Factory Five kit and performing assembly and custom car building services to a customer specification.
