Title: Your Thoughts on A.C. replacement.
Post by: Rattiac on April 02, 2019, 01:47:03 PM: The A.C. on my jeep is starting to make noise. Im pretty sure it's the bearing in the clutch. SO I've been looking for that specific bearing but getting hard to find for my 99 Cherokee.
Thinking I could find a a/c clutch set is also proving impossible to find.

Decided to call a shop near me to get the whole compressor w/ clutch unit and was quoted $1100
To replace everything . Compressor/clutch, lines, evaporator, condensor.
Claiming there may be metal in the lines, just doing the compressor may be bad and needing replacement in the future.

Does this sound right to you guy's. Should I bite the bullet or just do the compressor ???

Another shop quoted $1300 over the phone. Said unless everything is replaced no warranty.

Post by: sammons on April 02, 2019, 02:05:54 PM: Rattiac, I faced the same thing year before last on my 98 Dodge p.u. (probably same compressor). Bearing making noise, then developed a small freon leak at seal. After weighing all the options, I was either going to get a compressor from salvage yard (wrecked with charge still in and no signs of seal leakage, no bearing play/smooth) or go reman (price was about same). With remanufactured, they require proof of all replaced to get waranty. Decided i didn't want to spend any money on a dead horse.

My opinion is....if all was working well you probably don't need to worry about metal contaminents in system. I use to do it all the time, never had a problem. Replace, vac system, recharge oil/freon. Its all about what you can afford.

That way you can check for leaks (via vacuum) before charging.

So handing over a wad of cash vs. another project
vs time vs happy significant other.
Seems like my quotes are almost even and after watching what is involved. Think I'll let the pro's handle it.
Plus have a Yellowstone trip on the way. ;D 8)

Well, it doesn't sound like an unreasonable amount of money, and it is the safest way to go. Good choice. Have a safe and fun trip!!

Sort of in a remote area so I purchased a hose crimping set and gauges. Installation is very easy and savings are off scale. Benefits of DIY far outweigh the cost. Research will also save lots. I found a 2001 Kia Rio dryer only cost $5 at Rock Auto! There is also an inline filter that can be added to the system.

My new system is installed along with a new idler pulley. Jeep seems to have more power now and the fan even sounds different.😁

Hell maybe this summer I can get back to working on the 32.
