Title: Gasoline priming bottle?
Post by: EDNY on March 07, 2022, 08:09:17 PM
What do you guys use to prime carburetors etc?  Found these gun solvent bottles.  Seems like every time I want to prime a gasoline engine...I'm looking for something to pour gas in.

I use what ever is setting around that is smaller than the 5 gallon can the gas is in.  I pour a little in and set the rest of the gas far away from a backfire. I you are pouring gas into the carbo something is not quite right.Ignition should only take place inside the engine. I learned not to use the 5 gallon can when my friend "Broken Hand" attempted to reload his muzzle loading shotgun from a 1 pound can of black powder. Just a tiny spark can wreck your day, beard, hair, face, eyebrows, hand.......

My car always needs a prime after sitting a few days.  Have fuel  pressure and battery charging but just needs that extra help.  For some reason I never have starter fluid on hand but carb cleaner does the job well.  Just a quick squirt is all that's needed.

Do you have a choke?

Yes,  mechanical choke.

Sometimes when carbs are rebuilt a sealant in the bowl gets removed and they weep fuel at an almost unnoticeable rate as it evaporates as fast as it leaks. The only real problem is that over time setting the bowl dries out. I'd never heard of such a thing until I had it happen with a Quadra-Jet.

Rattiac

Years ago we shortened the shaft length on the quad accelerator pump shafts so there was a gap between the cam and the top of the shaft.  Then when you hit the peddle hard you got a stronger "squirt".

An accelerator pump with stronger spring could help starting...try some snappy peddle pumps to get the fuel into the carb.

I usually grab the lid off of a spray paint can, but that squirt bottle is a good idea, and I already have a couple with a straight nozzle.....wish I had thought of it.

I use a plastic coke bottle drill a hole in the cap and fill with fuel and squeeze  :)

Just remember you pour the fuel. Get the bottle out of the way. Then stand back and crank the engine. One backfire will confirm the wisdom of these steps. :o

What I think I like about the solvent squeeze bottle is that I can fill the carb bowl via the vent tube, then get in the car and pump fuel via the pedal.

Every time I've always thought.  Maybe I could drill a small hole in the top of the air cleaner lid with a rubber plug of some sort and just pull the plug then spray.

It's a process getting my scoop off just to spray a little carb cleaner. 😉

I'll look into the rod for the carb.  One thing could cause that is my throttle pedal isn't 100% full throttle when the pedal is to the floor.

Oh Yeah!

I gotta tinker/adjust the pedal . It was just too high off the floor and uncomfortable to drive,  so I lowered it a bit.

Come on man, It's about performance not comfort!  ;D
