Picked up my first truck today. 8)
Everyone meet Dusty.
2001 Dodge Dakota quad cab. 4.7 magnum, auto trans , and the real 4wd (2hi ,4-hi, 4-low) not that all wheel junk. Has a pretty throaty exhaust system. 😁
First two pics when I brought it home still all dusty. (Hence the name and it's color)
Last pic all washed up.
Came from a farmer in northern Utah.
Been seeing alot of Durango and Dakota's of this year still on the road these days. Survivors.😉
-
around here they all rusted out and got scrapped. Best to get truck oil or rust check oily type sprayed to make sure it stays dusty looking. Worth the money even if in dry climate.

It looks pretty clean. I think you will enjoy having a bit bigger hauler. You can get a Bowtie sticker. ;D
-
Looks like a very clean truck, I'm getting ready to retire here in a few months and after driving a company truck for 35 years ( all of them being Silverados )I'm needing to find a truck, I hate to say it but I've found a 2010 Ford F150 super cab with a Lariat package. Not sure if I can do it or not :-\
-
Good luck with your new truck! Very hard to find one in decent shape and condition! I bought a 2010 Ford F-150 XLT 4x4 SuperCap with Tow Package in 11/13 with 61k miles plus it was a Ford Lease Certifed with just one owner! Paid 24k for it in 11/13
Yesterday I just bought 4 brand new Michelin Defenders LXT Tire’s plus full alignment and these tires are good for 70K miles! Plus have 110k miles on my truck now! RoarsRods
-
Good luck with Dusty!! I think you will get good use of it. I had a 1999 Ram 1500. It had 240,000 miles on it when the trans started to go. I was going to invest in a new trans, but when I checked out the engine, just for piece of mind, I found one cylinder with about 30lbs of compression, you could never tell by the way it ran.
My first truck was a 1938 Plymouth....sure wish I had kept it.
-
My first pickup was a '40 Chevy with a well built 261 six. Another one I'd like to have back but I sold it to get a '51 Ford woody with the only 4 barrel I ever had on a flathead. I 'd like to have that back too but I sold to get......... ::)
-
Nice looking truck Rattiac. Good luck with it!
-
Thanks. I cant wait to start driving it. Legally that is 😉. Insured it today. Hopefully plates soon and maybe a top for the bed. Found one for $150 in great shape. 8)
My fix it list over the winter is.
1.)Fix tracks on power seat (drivers side)
I've dealt with these at work, simple fix.
2.) Tires and alignment.
3.) Fix speakers.------- someone installed tiny speakers with no bass at all. Like listening to a CB.😮
Threw some Hank Williams in the CD player just to compliment the sound. 😄
-
Well I did it yesterday I bought the 2010 Ford truck, I pick it up Friday. Ill post some pictures soon
-
Congrats, 62131, and good luck. Everybody's buying new trucks!.... I did buy a 1999 F150 in the summer to take the place of my 2003 F150 that I blew the engine on. It's a real "hoopty", but it's doing what I need it to do.
-
Yeah good luck with the Ford Truck 62131! I did buy a 2016 Ford Transit 150 10 passenger Van last summer. Going to remove some of the seats and put a bed out back so my wife and I can use it to travel. I liked it better than the Chevy's of the same vintage. When all the seats are in it we can fit all the kids and grandkids in one vehicle ;D
-
Just picked up this shell. Paid $125 . Shockingly great shape for the price.
Need to paint it though.
-
Thanks guys for all grats, I really wanted a Chevy or gmc but for comparison of the option vs cost the Ford was a lot better deal, plus this was a one owner, funeral director, my thoughts was he has an image to keep to the public.
-

Rattiac, $125.00?! It's worth much more than that just in scrap, or parts. Just the cap alone! Nice score there, what's the plan?
62131, you know funeral directors always keep their cars in top shape, usually low mileage too. You know, the funeral director is the last guy to let you down ;D ;D
-
Plan is to paint the top and mainly keep it stock .
I do happen to have a police push bar for a Durango. I was going to put it on the jeep but I think it will go on the Dakota now.😊
-
Dusty is officially legal today. Now my woman wants to drive it this weekend. :o
Gotta rotate the tires before that. Fronts are shot.
-
Fixed a few "free" things today.
1.) Rotated the bad tires to the rear , looks like I'll need brake pads and upper ball joints.
2.) Fixed the rear speakers. Used Chevy Tahoe woofers (we had left over from center seat conversions) . These are the subs for the Bose system. (Right in pic)
Sounds much better.
3.) Found a braided ground wire laying on the valve cover. Reattached it to the firewall with an eyelet.
4.) 3rd brake light was burned out. Fixed.
5.) Drivers seat was loose and moving forward when braking about an inch. Tighten up 4 bolts under the power base using locktight. Fixed.
Went for a drive up the canyon. Let the woman take a turn driving, she loves the rumble it has.
Saw my grandparents old cabin up in Heber.
-
Sometimes, fixing the little things add up and you get the most satisfaction, especially with a newly acquired car. :)
-
That is so true. Taking a day and fixing some small things can make so much difference in how much you enjoy your ride. It can even make me ignore some of the other stuff. :o
-
I just bought my first personal truck a couple weeks ago, changed the oil and filter, had new tires put on, looking at having Rhino liner sprayed in the bed. Trying to put my personal touches to it.
-
Mocking up the push bar. 8)
-
Looks rugged!
-
Nice Rattiac, you are moving right along with that toy.
-
Thanks. 8)
It's fully approved by Max. Took him for a ride.
An update on his abscess on his left cheek. It started to grow back, then one morning he scratched it open and it drained again. So far it hasn't come back. This is good, he saved me $800 from doctor "Doom". She got that nickname cause every time we talked the price went up.
Yesterday he was like a teenager, jumping around and even wanted to play catch. That hasn't happened in awhile but glad for him.
Today I sent the shell to Maaco for paint. These guy's are doing better paint than most of the hotrod shops around here. Better paint booth im sure.
-
When I was in high school there was a cheap paint shop that everyone joked about. My friend and I prepped his '57 Chevy pickup and taped what we didn't remove. All they had to do was shoot it. It was the best looking car in the school parking lot.
-
I've had many cars painted by MAACO. It works. Always good enough for me.
How old is Max?
-
He's 10.
-
Just finished mounting the push bar. I modified the upper mounts to the top of the bumper and the lowers I adapted to the frame with thick angle iron.
While I was at it I painted the grill black to add some attitude.
Started raining as I finished. Dont need to be getting sick.
-
Max looks like he's very content :)
-
Looks good!
-
Got the shell back from Macco.
Hooked up the trailer and gave it a test. Didn't go far cause the tires are toast.
With the jeep total length was 29ft.
With the truck it's 33ft.
-
Looks like they did a nice job on the shell.
-
Is the trailer empty? Looks like the rear truck hitch is loaded up some.
-
looks good
-
Looking good, Rattiac!
-
Finally pulled down the spare tire and found the wire for the 3rd brakelight. Some say it's labeled CHTL (center high taillight) but mine wasn't.
Found it at the passenger rear side behind the spare. It was folded back to itself.
Wired the dome light to the license plate light.
Helps prevent leaving it on by accident.
Now I dont have to worry about the fuzz.🚔
Used a 5ft , 4-flat trailer extension. Perfect length.
-
Good work! It looks like I be doing some of that kind of wire chasing on the 2006 Silverado I bought yesterday. I has an aftermarket radio with tons of features one of which is a backup camera that doesn't seem to work, There is also a trailer light flat 4 connector coming out of the floor near the transfer case shifter. It may have been for speakers in the back seat area.
-
Made some progress on the truck. 8)
Took it to get the 02 sensors replaced.
Previous owner had 2 new upper sensors in the box.
Had those installed but it popped another code and ran like crap. Turns out they were wrong.
I bought and installed new units and now No Codes.
😃
Runs great now. Ive been driving it off&on to see if they come back. So far so good.
Looks like it's a keeper. 🚛
Next on the list is upper ball joints and tires.
Till then. I picked up a new fuel pump for the jeep .
200,000 miles and it's still going :o but I worry the screen is getting plugged up resulting in lower power.
Shouldn't be too bad since I already cut a square hole in the floor.
Poor 32 is just sitting with a flat tire 😢.
EDNY;; I was parked on a storm grate making it look squatted.
-
Glad it's better. I'm gathering parts and fluids for an enter end fluid and filter change on my '06 Silverado. I had not thought about O2 sensors I need to check for codes. Gas milage seems pretty bad but I haven't really checked it.
-
One thing I keep thinking about and never do is to remove the exhaust manifold bolts and anti-seize the threads (one at a time of course). Talking about the GM LS engines..they seem to love breaking bolt heads off...might prevent a headache in the future. Probably wouldn't hurt to do this annually and R&R-ing them one at a time wouldn't be a big deal.
-
I admit I fit in the dinosaur category. My previous newest GM V8 was the 350 in my '99 Yukon. The 5.3 in my "new" '06 Silverado bears little resemblance to anything I know. I won't be doing much under the hood. Oh well, maybe I can use that time on something that I understanding needs the attention. I don't work under the hood of my wife's '14 Grand Cherokee either. ;D
-
I think I am pretty much with you Sixball. I never took the time to stay up with technology. I don't consider myself real old but I enjoy the nuts and bolts of my youth and although they say new technology is great and so much better....who cares? I do as much on my newer cars that youtube will allow :)
-
The new stuff is for the younger guys :)
-
Yes, I thought getting a 15 year old pickup that I'd be OK, NOT. Youtube has been a big help. I'm glad I know some young guys.
-
Guess I celebrated too soon. The po455 code came on yesterday morning and this morning also 🤨.
States a large evap leak. Been looking at videos, I have a few things to check out including a purge valve that people install upside-down.
Gonna let it go for a bit and switch to the fuel pump on the jeep.
-
Well it's a large evap leak...should be easy to isolate with a smoker. There are a lot of videos showing how to make a smoker also. Up here the filler neck gets rotted and leaks....fuel caps are the first/easiest item to check. Look for rust around the filler neck where the cap rubber contacts it. You mentioned a new fuel pump...if it was for this vehicle and it is an internal tank pump...did you get a good seal?
Sorry..just re-read your post...getting your vehicles mixed up.
-
Sorry, I'll keep my pickup somewhere else. :(
-
Sixball::;
Feel free to post your truck stuff here, I dont mind.
Would like to see pics of it.
The newer stuff isn't too bad to work on, I picked up a cheap scanner for mine. Helps point ya in the right direction.
-
Sorry, I'll keep my pickup somewhere else. :(
My fault ...keep listing your situations...we want to help!
-
Ok, I know I tend to ramble and steer things away from the original topic. :-[ I hope to finish the winch wiring today and maybe get some pictures.
-
sixball---Keep it up I enjoy your posts!
-
Thanks Ed, I really enjoy this site and the good people here.
I finished the winch connections from the battery to the master switch done and the electric cables run to the rear of the truck. No time tomorrow there's grandsons' baseball to watch. Sunday I'll run the front cables. I'm still waiting on the front hitch to ship. It's been on backorder for several weeks. Some pictures soon.
-
I finished the wiring for the winch today and tried it out by moving a '90 S Suburban a few feet further than my tractor would a few years ago. I spooled out all but the east wrap on the spool and winched the pickup back the the Suburban to tighten the cable and see how neatly it spooled. It did well. Not the fastest but it didn't hesitate. It is heavy and I can see than moving it from front to rear or installing it in a spot so steep that I would need it might be a problem. I have a synthetic rope and an aluminum fairlead that will save twenty + pounds which will help.
The power leads tuck away out of site and the remote works great. This will help with some projects around the place like the Ford Tractor that has been stuck on the hill for a couple of years. A few pics, sorry for the fuzzy ones.
-
Nice setup ya got there. 👍
I like the disconnect. Not many people do that anymore.
-
Looks like a nice, clean setup. And, you know you'll make good use of it.
-
Thanks! It will get used. Hopefully the front hitch will ship soon.
I like the disconnect as I don't want the potential of a #2 cable dead short that I can not turn of. The connection the the side post battery took some thought to get studs the correct length and good connections for all wiring. The red + cable with the 150 amp circuit breaker provided a huge hot area where a dropped wrench could have put on quite a show so I wrapped it with the piece of rubber tool drawer liner. I still need a shield on the disconnect. A friend of mine built a neat little DC welder that ran off his truck battery to make emergency repairs away from the shop. There is power there. Our home power is solar. I once dropped a 9/16 wrench across two banks of big 24V batteries. I had to replace it once I could see again. :o Lucky it was Craftsman. ;D
When I recover the Ford Tractor I'll make a video. 8)
-
Like your set up, nice neat, build your shield and you will be ready
-
Thanks, the last picture is the 20' of #2 cable, welding lead, that goes to the back. When I bought that kit there was an 18" option. I'm glad I didn't get it. The pickup is a 1500 extended cab (small doors) short bed. There isn't much of the 20' left over. The front harness is 8' and there is a couple of feet extra. I think I am going to build a set with the Anderson style connector on one end and jumpers on the other. There isn't much room to get to the battery and I could get or give a jump through the winch cables.
This all started because my son and I borrowed a car hauler with a winch. I wanted a winch for my trailer, and I still do. I'm building a mount on the trailer for this but I don't think I'd ever need a 12,000 lb heavy ass winch there. So......... :o
-
Rattiac, Anything on the leak or the Jeep fuel pump?
-
Funny thing about that "leak" . I put $20 of gas in and the light turned off :o. Oh well till next time. ;)
Swapped the new pump in the jeep (Delphi). Took me about 5 minutes thanks to the awesome hole in the floor. 😎
Getting the plug undone took me longer. Im used to the lil electrical plastic connectors with safety locks and such but this was tight.
Also made some RV mudflaps for trailer protection.
-
Gotta' protect that trailer. Can you still get the little jewels? :o
-
Since the clearcoat is almost gone up front.
I think I wanna add some "patina" on the hood, eventually clearcoating that.
Let's discuss how to weather it up some. Just a little surface rust poking through.
-
If your going for that faded paint look. I would use a red scotch brite pad to rub off the base coat. that would give a good surface for the clear coat to stick to
-
What is happening to your truck is patina. What you are trying to do is faux. Patina happens, but you have to be patient. 8)
-
I know what Sixball is saying, the real deal is ideal. I also think I know what you are trying to achieve. Here's one of many videos out there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_GJG3jPKG5k
-
Yesterday I replaced the upper ball joints.
Not too bad of a job since they bolt on.
Now im ready for tires.
-
On my '89 GMC they were riveted on and you had to cut them off, the replacement bolted on. I need to check all of that on the '06. I had one fail on the '89 as I pulled out of my parking place at work. The day before I had made the drive home from Tahoe. :o
-
Ball joints can be a pain to change, especially the ones that are pressed in
-
Ball joints and control arm bushings, especially on the older cars, was a P.I.T.A!
-
I just got new tires rod ends for my roadster. The old sockets were just shot out. The new ones are a newer style, mid '50s. ::)
-
I have a bag of those somewhere in my toolbox.
Yesterday I got new tires for the truck. Wanted some cheap M/T's but they were discontinued.
So I settled for some mild A/T's. $500 out the door.
Also it got a good driveway wash .
-
New shoes and ready to dance! ::) I've been doing some shopping for my '53. I may have to have Diamondback make the rears.
-
Pretty decent price on tires, these days everything has gone crazy on prices.
Sixball, heard a lot of good things on Diamond backs. Lots better than the Coker stories.
-
I have never had a truck and after selling my Astro of 35 years, I wanted one. This is where I am at on my 1953 3100 build.
-
Now that's a motor.
-
Now that's a motor.
Thanks Ed, should move the 53 along nicely...
-
Nice truck. 8)
-
Nice looking '53. Mine will never be that clean.
Sammons, The thing I like about the way Diamondbacks are made is that they can vulcanize the white walls on any tire so there isn't a thin layer of black to scrape off like Cokers. I want to see if they can add their WW to some mud & Snow tires for the back of my pickup. If not I'll just cut/grind another set of raised white letter tires.
-
Very cool looking truck Munch. Coming right along!
Keep us updated!
-
very nice
-
Truck looks real nice Munch, you really squeezed that engine in there.
-
Thanks guys, the truck sits on a S10 chassis and has a 5.1 LS. I started with the bare frame and have greatly enjoyed the build. Next is a five window conversion. I love the five windows...
-
I couldn't get everything to line up that nice on a stock frame. :o I like the 5 window cab too except for chopped ones. The side windows look like port holes. ::) Too bad you are so far away I have a 5 window top that's been removed. I think the inside pieces are there too.
-
Well great. Took the truck to work today and on the way home I got rear-ended >:(
In between lights rolling about 5-10 mph coming to a stop. A f250 ran into me. His front recovery hooks hit the bumper dead on.
Amazing how a low speed crash can hit so hard.
-
Munch ..Are you using the Code 504 conversion kit....? Nice looking truck
-

That is too bad. Ford guys are like that. They don't care about cars and run their crap into people who do. I hope it's just the bumper.
-
At least it was just the bumper and no sheet metal damage
-
Sorry Rattiac. Hope no one was hurt, sometimes it takes a day or two before you feel the effects of even a small crash. Hopefully the guy has insurance and you will get a brand new bumper.
Watch it Sixball, I'm half a Ford guy ;D
-
Here in NY that would cause neck injury and put somebody out of work for three months ;)
-

Dang Sixball, I ended up buying the replacement panels. Now I have to find someone to do the work as I don't have the skills. Its hard to find someone around here that you can trust to do good work.
-
Munch ..Are you using the Code 504 conversion kit....? Nice looking truck
Yes FATnLOW, I used there brackets and four link setup. The four link is a nice piece as it uses the front spring perches.
-
Watch it Sixball, I'm half a Ford guy ;D
And the other half?........ ::) ;D
-
Munch you are coming right along on that pickup, looks good.
Rattiac, sorry about your truck. That really sucks! People just don't pay attention anymore.
-
Friday I dealt with the insurance.
I can either take a check , slap a new bumper on and call it good or send it to a shop of my choice have the frame checked and bumper swapped.
IDK what would yall do?
Nothing looks crooked. Im pretty sure the frame is stronger than these newer midsize pickups.
Ive heard a horror story about the new ZR2 and jeep trucks
-
If the frame looks straight and nothing else looks damaged, i'd run a tape measure and "X" measure the rear rails. Some of those small holes in the frame are for alignment and measuring points. If it "X"s with in 1/4" or less of being the same....i'd take the check. Might find a good used bumper at the salvage yard and save more coin😁
-
If it were me and I was even the least bit concerned about the frame, I would send it to the shop, it isn't costing you anything. If I didn't think the frame was damaged I would take the check, buy a bumper and a case of beer.
-
Insurance is sending a check for 751.
Called wrecking yards to no avail.
Ordered a new bumper through Interstate auto body for 438 and they delivered within an hour.
Beats 101° temps searching yards and working in dirt.
Have a little left over for an alignment and a trailer brake controller, some beer 🍺
-
A little aggravation, but it could have been worse and no one was hurt. I call it a win
-
I'm assuming the person who hit you had insurance. that is becoming rare around here. Valid driver's license, registration, & insurance are only suggestions for tax payers.
-
In Philly we have a program where if you are stopped by the police and do not have a license, registration or insurance your car is towed. It's a great tool for the police.
-
New bumper went on yesterday.
Sooo shiney, sooo chrome.
Even installed a 1-7/8" ball on the bumper for those light little trailers that need moving.
The quarter panels are dinged where the bumper hit the sheetmetal but no biggie, its a truck.
-
Looking good. :)
-
Much better 8)
-
A little repair it looks new again
-
After recieving an alignment.
I hooked up the trailer for a camping trip. Shortly into the trip, the upper radiator hose blew when it kicked down a gear during a hillclimb. Good thing for AAA.
Had it towed back home and switched to Plan B.
Swapped gear to the jeep, my dad offered to haul the trailer up the mountain with his RV. I followed and towed it back home.
It has the radiator cap in middle of the hose, made of plastic. I wonder if they have a steel version of this ?
-
I don't know but you could probably check on line by brand and retailer. The plastic hose is probably as good as a plastic radiator and it won't rust. :o
-
I think ill get the OE upper hose unit and grab a aftermarket coolant inlet just in case. Leave it it the truck for a quick roadside repair.
While im at it, do the lower as well.
Pretty sure im going back to the saltflats for World of Speed and take the truck for more testing.
-
Dusty is back up and running. New hoses installed.
Had to get a remote hose clamp removal tool to get the lower hose off the radiator as delicately as possible. Worth the $35.
To bleed these 4.7's is a bit different, theres a bleeder screw/allen bolt on the top of the engine where the hose connects. The thermostat is on the bottom of the engine 😮. Didnt change that yet but gave the long bolts a PB soaking .
Had to remove the battery to install the upper hose and the battery box was a mess, terminals too. All that was cleaned.
Went to the car wash. Cleaned the engine and all the coolant off the body.
-
I have become a big fan of dielectric grease on battery terminals.
-
Im a stickler when it come to dirty battery post's on my vehicles ;D
I have a red spray (not sure what its called) that I put on em.
Took the truck/trailer up over the mountain today and wandered around Cabellas. Grabbed some garlic fish bait.
Passed the test. Ready for the saltflats.
-
Where can you catch garlic fish? That sounds good. ;D
-
Grabbed some 4 inch amber LED fog lights. Drilled out the holes below the bumper and mounted em with a L-bracket.
Wired it all up today. Super bright. Pointed em down below the headlights pattern on a wall.
Can't wait for a snow storm.
-
I've been thinking of the same thing for my pickup. Let us know how it works. Thinking snow more than fog here but when we have it it is thick.
