Title: Running a half hood
Post by: munch on January 02, 2014, 02:19:53 PM
I want to run a half hood on my 1930.  For those of you that also run half hoods, how do you keep them fastened down?

Munch   I'm thinking of doing the same on my 32, I was thing of using 1/4 turn fasteners. You can find the on Speedways website part # 91007111. This will let you see what I'm talking about.

Thanks, that is certainly cheaper than what I was looking at.

Have you looked at the various strap kits, pretty awesome.

I checked out the website those are nice looking, It give me some more ideals, leather strap material is fairly cheap.

I have a set of those leather straps but may just make another set of hood locks for my open hood 34. My 33 Chevy hood is a one piece top, I made it hinge on the passenger side. On the drivers side I made (2) plunger style locks, you can see in the picture that they are still in the rough (need to be final welded and welds smoothed out)....the back plunger enters the firewall, the front into a guide near the radiator.

Hope this makes sense: I cross my arms when reaching under the hood, pull the front pin with my right hand, and the back one with my left..then just lift the hood.  You can't see the locks from the side of the car.

Ed

FYI: The open hood picture is before I installed the plunger locks.

I was thinking of something like that, but my fabrication skills with metal are not up to par.  I am going to think about the strap for now.

Making them sounds good, but what about the latching mechanism?

Not sure what you mean...but basically you only need a hole for spring loaded rods to enter front and back.  The spring locks can be made on the bench and either welded or bolted to the hood.

You fabricated all the parts?

Yes..really not that complicated.

Watching the football game right now...but just quickly scratched out the attached drawing...maybe it will help?

ED,

If you make your straps, what will you use for a latch?

ED,

If you make your straps, what will you use for a latch?

Here ya go...one of my straps to show how the system works...a brass latch is screwed to the hood and body.

BTW:  I have a walking foot upholstery sewing machine to stitch interior and leather.

Ed

Should have mentioned...my "2 strap system"is the "long" one piece system...the strap covers the entire hood and is latched on the body on both sides.  You probably want the short strap version using (4) short belts with (eight) latches?

Ed,

Do you run it across the entire hood?

Sorry.. already answered that in my previous post while you were typing!

My bad, I should slow down and read.  I like the full hood straps.  It would seem you could run the half or full hood.

My fault...went back and edited the message while you were typing ;D

Anyway...the full size straps seem to fit those vintage open race cars ?...I like the (4) short strap version better. I may just make a set out of nylon since I have the commercial sewing machine.  Then I won't need to worry about the leather molding, getting wet etc.

I'll have to keep my eyes open for those brass latches, then I can just pick up some 1" to 2" nylon strap material and use those nylon quick releases? Would be a piece of cake making a short set of four in just about any color!

I like that...they even have stainless "footman loops".

Here is just one idea if you wanted to go with nylon, I think 1.5" wide might look better:

Ed,

That would definitely work, but I must admit I like the old school look of the other latch styles.  You make a good point about the leather, but it sure looks good.

Right now I think I am going for the short straps and maybe something else latter.

Here's another option using Mil-Spec rifle slings, would be great for a Rat Rod for sure:

If you need any stitching done...let me know...just pay any postage.

I'm sure I won't be using them...maybe I'll make a deal with you. They came with the 34 coupe when I bought it, new - never installed them and now thinking..I might just make a set of nylon units.

BTW: Put a link to the Restoration Supply Company below.

Thanks

Yes, the internet is an amazing tool.  Stay in touch about the straps you build, I want to see them.

When I ran a half hood on my 28 (in my avitar) I used small toggel type tool box latches.

This one is a little better. The only pics of the car are real photos that I have to scan, and back then I was more into building than documenting!

I used Zeus pins (quarter turn pins) on my 1930 Chevy, started with the type with a slot in the head, but I needed a screw driver or a penny to turn them. Spent another $2 & bought the kind with a wing nut type head. Simple to install, I drilled one hole on each side of hood ,front corners, and into the trailing edge of my radiator shell. Pop rivet the twisted spring in place on back side of shell, and its out of sight.
Just two pins and no problem with wind at triple digit speeds!

Thanks Moose, I took it out for a drive Sunday as it was so nice.  Everything went great, hood stayed put.  I know the leather will stretch  some but good for now.

That looks very clean and "professional". It goes with the finish on the rest of the car.

It was a custom mixed purple I am told with a Toyota red on the trim.  Looked good from a distance, but had a lot of crap in the paint.  It was a rush job for sure.
Now I have filled in the top and that is primer, as well as various other repairs.  Don't know what color I will paint when the time comes.

Munch, that looks great, very professional. I just picked up a fiberglass hood top from "32chevy vette" and I was wondering how I was going to hold it down, this is definitely an option.

I did pick up my (4) nylon hood straps and have everything needed to install them...just need the "global warming" to kick in!  You did a really nice job!

Thank you sir, I got the setup from Hot Rod Leather, but there is also a link below for Strapworks that may have some hardware.  I got mine in the bare leather because I was going to make some additional loops and then treated all with neatsfoot oil.

Good luck...

A pal of mine here has the Dzus type fasteners on his '48 Anglia.  I know it's not a Chevy, but the idea is still the same.  He can remove the hood and side panels separately.  The only thing I don't care for there is that his entire hood removes, as well as the side panels...and I have to wonder how long it will be before he scratches up his expensive paint.  The other concern I have is what if you need to get under the hood quickly for an emergency of any kind?  It takes a minute or so to remove all the fasteners.
Of course, if you leave the sides open you have access instantly.
