Tom I was in another forum and a fellow was wanting suggestions on glueing his rubber mat on his running board...I remember that you posted some time back when you did yours you used a Locitite product....can you post what you use so these fellows can have an alternative rather than a mastic...Thanks

doesn't I & I repo offer a specific contact cement for their running board rubber. ???? I have a couple of cans of something unlabeled from when I bought another pair 10 years ago and most likely the item has expired its shelf life.
When Jim McConville was producing these mats originally he offered 3M #10 adhesive. I still have those same mats on my 35 coupe from 1972. Speaking with Jim back in the day, he spent 3 days at 3M matching the contact cement to the rubber compound he was using.
I bought a pair of original steel running boards with repo mats on them last year. Whatever glue was used easily pulled off by hand.

FWIW I used countertop laminate glue and they have stuck just fine.

specifically what BRAND of countertop glue.
Where did you get it .
Also whose the maker of the running board mats you used it on.

I got the running board rubber on line. Think it was about $5 a foot and not really the "correct" pattern for my year car, but most of the car is altered anyway. Got the glue at Lowes, think the brand is Weldwood. If I sound vague it's because I put them on 5-6 years ago. Good news is they are still stuck flat, no curled edges.

Here's the stuff I used on my running board mats. Loctite #5510 P/N 1562044. Got it from a friend that was a Loctite Rep. Worked well on the mats I got from I&I Reproductions.

MOST LIKELY IS **WELDBOND*** CLEAR MULTIPURPOSE GLUE I USE IN MODEL RAIL ROAD STRUCTURE BUILDING FOR WOOD STRIPS.

copied the picture for when I have to replace a set of mats. 3M owns Loctite so I guess that where the 10 comes in as that was original number for the 3M contact cement

Could always use Urethane for windshields.
I was thinking of rhino-liner sprayed on my running boards. When I get to those. ::)

when your gluing rubber to metal its important that the glue is compatible with rubber and will hold it down. That's why Jim McConville who created the running board rubber for the early chevys 33-36 ,I & I and The Filling Station use, spent 3 days at 3M testing to see what glue worked best with his rubber compound. $300 rubber for run boards want to ruin it ?
Windshield urethane, really.
That stuff that's used in pickup beds "rhino hide " have you ever looked into how to get that stuff off if you change your mind. ???

Whoa. Calm down Mike, just a suggestion. ;)
I've seen running boards done with that and turned out great.
Urethane works but whatever it's used on it's permanent.
