Great article, I was glad to see the mention of the Plymouth. There was a '32 Plymouth roadster sitting on our farm in Texas. It was perfect except that it had been sitting where my uncle parked it in the early '40s. The story was that my Uncle Blake had fixed it up with new paint, upholstery, rebuilt engine, etc. He drove it tow the movies and when he came back it had been vandalized by enemies of one or more of his older brothers. He hitchhiked the 6 miles home and went back to get it with his 3 brothers. They came home a few hours later with the Plymouth in tow behind Uncle Blake's new car, An almost new '41 Ford Coupe. Evidently the guys who trashed his Plymouth felt so bad about it that chipped in and bought the Ford for him. ::) I played in that old Plymouth until I came home from school one day to find that my dad had cut it up for scrap. He did that a lot.

I like the conclusion that because of aggressive Ford and Chevy competition they are both sought after now.

Chevrolet  = GM could have easily had a V8 for the 32 chev.

The Viking a V8 1929-30 Oldsmobile model motor could have been used.    Also the Oakland V8 1929--1931 could have been used.  Gm used the Oakland V8 for 1932 in the Pontiac.

So a little brand engine switching under the hood could have gotten Chevrolet an inexpensive V8 they already had castings for.  Have a six or have a V8............just like ford with the 4 cyl and the V8.

Somehow the bean counters and stiffs at GM could not see the forest for the trees.

The V8 offered in the Pontiac was only a 20hp difference. Sixes rated at 60hp and the V8 just 80.
I bet the lighter engine won out.

As we all know...Chevy built their first V8 back in 1917...here the video of a 1918 V8 powered Chevy automobile.

I doubt if it was a big deal for devoted Chevy guys. An unproven 60 horse flathead V8 or a proven 60 horse overhead inline 6.

Here's a little more knowledge for you to digest.  The 1917-1918 Chevrolet V8 , the OHV motor was made by Mason Motors a supplier to GM.. Wasn't that great an engine as the D4  D5 series only lasted 2 years.
