Went to clean up the car a bit after the rains at the car show Sat. and ran across a problem. Went to clean the rubber mats on the running boards and it turned the rag BLACK! Just rub a hand over the dry rubber and it will turn it black. Of course I'm worried about transfer of the black to the floor mats. I doubt that a good scrubbing would change anything so my alternatives are to replace the mats which will rip the paint off or seal the mats with something. Anyone come across this problem and found a cure? Thanks.

where ever you got the rubber mats from......I & I or the place in Oregon who also sells them. just cannot remember their name. = the filling station !
I would phone them and ask the question. Not sure I ever saw the problem discussed before.
I would also start by googling.........the question and see what turns up.

Probably all the (armor-all) on it.
Give a good cleaning till no more black on the rag.
Then you'll know, before a project starts .
I wouldn't worry unless they are cracked or peeling.
I have some mats my boss found in the shop and gave me but , I think I'll have a thick rhino-liner sprayed instead. Once and done.

ever wonder how they would get that rhino liner spray off if you changed your mind. ??????

A few rods around here have it on their running boards and it looks good. Mostly they got tired of the mats coming off.

If you use the correct # 3M contact cement that they sell separately ( I&I repo ) just for this rubber compound then there should not be a problem with running board rubber lifting off.
I did mine back in 1974 to my 35 chev std coupe and they are still on the metal backing plates as designed to be under them from Chevrolet.
Said it before and will say it again , that the original producer of the repo rubber mats 1933--1936 , James McConville spent a week at 3M labs testing contact cement that would stick to metal and his rubber compound.
My installation proves the test of time , so far 45 years. Do it once, do it right, Mickey Mousing has no room in building street rods.

Well, currently it's a rat rod so the rules don't apply here. 😁
