Let's see/talk your car heaters.
Im gonna order one shortly before I start the metal project since the defrost will require fab work. Probably use the ash tray hole for the defrost vent.
-
On the '39 build I used an OLD AIR heat/defrost/air unit. Caught in some bad weather last year coming back from Pueblo the defrost feature sure came in handy. Never used that feature in any of my other builds but would not skip it again. Heat and air are nice but ya gotta see to drive.
-
I installed a Vintage Air Gen II Heater with Defroster #506101 in my 33. Very happy with it. It fits under the cowl real well and doesn't interfere with leg room.
-
T FOCH....... got a picture of the heater especially defrost vents and where they come out.
My 35 std coupe does not have clearance for vents defrost.

The stock heater and defroster in my '53 pickup worked fine until the control valve started leaking. Those units are getting expensive and hard to find. I have a kit and a few old ones to practice on. Mt son's '54 Studebaker has an interesting set up with a small round heater core under the passenger set..
-
I have not hooked up the defroster yet. Plan is to put some 1/2" spacers were the dash mounts. This will leave a gap along the top edge where the windshield meets the dash. I plan to create a piece along the top of that with louvers for the defroster. Here's some pics of the heater unit. It's a compact unit and works well.
-
oh that's compact for sure, about the smallest I have seen.
When you get around to doing the defroster vents, I would be very interested to see how you accomplish that.
My coupe 35 std is very similar to your 33 cabriolet.

I ordered this EBay unit. Found one that didn't use weak computer fans.
Also van floor heaters is another alternative. (3rd pic). Advantage is bolting up to the firewall flat.
I need to find an ash tray for my 32 dashboard now. Anybody know where I can find one ?

I have one if your interested, it needs a little work the lid is sprung

Awesome. I'll take it. Let me know how much ?
Any pics of it ?
The heater arrived today. I'll probably try to mount it this weekend once the shop is cleaned.

Rattiac, I like your idea of using the ashtray as a defrost duct. I wouldn't have had that option on my 35, dash is too thin on top.
I used Vintage Air Gen ll heat/def/air unit #981412. I used a pair of long skinny defrost ducts that I had scraped out of something (Chev/Ford/Mopar/Amc?) I just slotted holes under the garnish molding, and flush mounted them. I'll either just slot garnish or graft on 1950'ish AD truck defrost louvers to the garnish to finish off.
-
heres what I did, used the flex tubing and attached defrost vent to it. then used Velcro sticky attached to that to hold it under the dash.
Idea was if I had to use defrosters, reach under dash, pull defrost up to dash and point it at the windshield. Only ever had to use it once in late fall crisp nite.

Thanks , trying not to alter the dash so this seems like a great option. Maybe reversing the lid to help direct air.
Started mounting the heater today. Had to find some heater hose with a 90°bend.
Measured 9"wide x 8"deep x 4"thick .
-
Cool! That's what I was thinking to, and maybe add some defuser blades in there to direct flo L & R.
-
Had it mounted today and already gonna move it up 1.5" .
The heater in the shop wont stay lit so not much progress.

Rattiac sorry for the delay got busy with house things (honey do's) and forgot will get them tomorrow

Sounds good. 8)
Gonna try to fix the (propane) heater today, so I can finish the heater install. If that makes any sense. 😁
30° in the shop. 😬
Im hoping the thermocouple needs cleaned.
Grabbed another thermocouple at Lowe's but this looks like a whole different animal.
-
Alrighty then. Propane Heater is going and staying at 55°.
Install is almost complete. Except for wiring.
I need help !!!
I dont get thier wiring instructions.
3 wires from switch (red, blue, black)
2 wires on heater/motor box.
Now shouldn't it be like this at switch.
Red - power in
Blue- power out to motor (+)
Black ground
Thier instructions make no sense.
-
Rattiac I looked up that Meco unit you have, no wire diagram to be found. That is a strangely worded instruction sheet.
They way I read it (crosseyed) is:
1-Red wire from switch and the red wire from the motor go to 12v positive switched battery.
2- Black wire from switch goes to chassis ground.
3- Blue wire from switch goes to motor Black as a motor ground.
Probably using that blue wire as the variable ground for fan speed?
Maybe someone else will have some input on this. Just the way I read it, might not be correct!
Add* I thought more about that, I don't understand why they have 12v power to switch if they are using ground as the on/off/speed control. Unless the switch has a light inside? You may have to get a muti-meter out and just hook up switch to see if the Blue wire is sending a resisted ground or power out.
-
Hooked up the multi meter and the ground resistance went up as I turned the dial. :o
Houston, we have a heater. ;D
Well, learned something new in electrical .
Tomorrow I'll fire it up, bleed the system and give it the official test.
-
Testing complete. Once it gets up to 180° it puts out some really good heat but..... apparently I have a 160 thermostat I forgot about.
When I turn the heater on , I can watch the temp go back down to 160. :o.
Probably time to change that thermostat here soon. ;D

Ready whenever you are. Last night I was able to drill a few 1/8" holes in the wood to see check clearance underneath. Looks like it's gonna work.

Sorry Rattiac, I've had cell phone issues (A Rotten APPLE) had to make two 250 mile round trips to the nearest Apple store to get my 6 month old phone replaced under warranty. I'll send you the pictures first thing in the morning If you want to send me your personal email or cell number I can send it either way you prefer
-
Text is probably easier. PM sent. 8)
-
Rattiac just wondering if you received your package I sent you?
-
Tracking says it should show up today.
-
Starting to wonder. Did I mount the heater too high ? Or something else ???
Temp sweeps up to 220° ish and then drops back to 180 fairly quickly. No boiling.
-
Could be where your sender for your guage is located gets hotter before the thermostat does. cool water from the radiator sitting on the top of the thermostat.

Reminds me of my S10 (2.2 engine) temp would shoot up high then just drop. Figured the thermostat was working properly but installed a new one anyway. Still goes up and drops when the thermostat opens.
Some of the old timers around here still drill a small hole in the thermostat plate so it can bleed itself.
-
After much testing, went back to the 160° thermostat and all is well.
Not much difference in heat between the 180 and the 160°.
Heater puts out some good heat .
If I ever have to drive it during the cold winter I can block off part of the radiator with cardboard to raise the temps.
