I just tread an article in a hot rod magazine where a shop was mounting a fender and running board package on a model A I believe.  In the article it stated that the builders never used the running board brackets in their installations and just supported the boards by the splash apron and fender connections.

Would this support someone's weight?  Seems to me you would be asking for damage.

I agree with you, I don't think you'd be able to step on them and expect them to support you.

Munch most of them are used on lowered cars and never intended to be stepped on by the builder. My uncle was parked next to a guy at a show, when a fat kid stepped up on the edge of the running board to stick his head inside for a look.  He kinked the edge of the board down. 
My uncle had a '39 Dodge coupe (custom lead slead) that the running board was welded on and molded in. He had a kid step up on and scratched It pretty good. He hollered at the father and threatened to kick his a$$ for letting the kid do it.

Yup, without the strong running board brackets bolted to the frame, step onto them your asking for trouble .

I usually build my boards with a 16 guage by 1 inch square tubing under the outside edge front to back. That way if someone does step on them they will have the added strenth to handle the weight, but I still most of the time use the supports also. OVERKILL I GUESS.

Nobody's fault but their own. I don't see why you wouldn't keep the supports. Some people are just dumb.
