Anyone here have experience planning carhows or other ?
I had a great idea to plan a "rolling carshow" or tour I guess ya could call it. The plan would be to tour some of our old roads .

How about a charity type tour? That way they don't compete for trophies...just gather at one spot then travel to a local eatery on the other side of town? Our club organizers set up tours of farming museums and other interesting business locations.
Always thought that a tour to a Senior Citizens home would be appreciated...bet it would bring back memories for some?
If you did accept donations...just pick a charity that all agree with ... especially ones that rely on public donations.

Great idea Rattiac. Me personally, I would rather do a tour with a group of old cars on historic old roads than attend a car show where you just sit in the hot sun with nothing to do and a loud concert speaker in your ear.
With careful planning, free or charity, time of year for the tour area, get freinds to help and be committed, and remember it's usually a thankless job and you can't please everyone, it would be fun.

I've organized a couple of foliage drives for my company. We usually try to drive though a covered bridge or two and always pick a great place to stop and eat. The one thing I figured out is make several stops along the way so you have time to socialize. I agree I'd rather take a drive with a bunch of old cars than sit at a car show. One thing I was going to try was a poker run. A lot of the bike guys around here do that and it makes the ride interesting.
Ed visiting a senior home is a great idea. The local Model A Club does it and from what I've heard the seniors really enjoy it!

A long, long time ago we did a, sort of, car scavenger hunt with clues that led from one landmark to another until it eventually led to a park.
Tom, how did I know your foliage drive would include covered bridges? ;D ;D

I came up with a catchy name the other day ----- " Steel, Rust and Rubber meet dirt tour.
Already done some of the route I had in mind except one small road. I was thinking keeping it short this time as to not scare anybody away but have some historical significance to the Lincoln Hwy/Pony Exspress trail ..
The plan would be to leave about 5pm. and get to the Pony Exspress road . Its dirt beyond this point. Head to the Simpson Springs and camp for the night. The next morning head down a short dirt road over to Dugway then over to a quick section of the Lincoln Hwy that is paved, Once up the canyon there's a monument to stop at. On our way home stop into Opher and should be home by 2-ish.
The only problem I have come accross is the timing of this. I have the scedule for next years carshows and so every weekend is planned already . There is a CS thats out of town one weekend and maybe plan it at that time for those who want to stay local . Just gotta do it before it gets hot. Matbe I'll post up a map here soon. The few that I talked to at carshows seemed to like the idea .

Well I decided to pull the trigger on this and already started making up a flyer.
Last month I did a pre-run of the route I had in mind . Just as I was over the top of the canyon I saw a 54 Buick going the other direction . Pretty cool to see that especially when he's heading toward a snowstorm .
When I checked out the road that connects Pony express and Lincoln hwy . I was near the military base airing up my tires and was checked out by "a few good men" (wondering what I was doing there probably) .They just drove by and returned to base .
I think having a overnighter probably wont work out but the loop can be done in a few hours .
I'll keep it a option though but at the end of the tour .
Now I just gotta hand out some flyers to those I think would do it . Even if 3 or 4 cars showed I'd be happy with that .
Oh yeah , the condition of the road was in great shape . Smooth sailing 90% of the way.
I'd have to say it would be 60% asphalt and 40% dirt ratio .

Trailer is hooked up to the support rig. Barrowed a good spare tire from the old-man.
This is one of those ---- "What am I getting myself into plans" .
Got the Wife and Bulldog rollin with the A/C on. Its gonna be hot , dusty and dirty for me.
Just one of those things ya gotta do when you hit your mid 30's.
Talk to yall when I get back, if I dont drive myself into a heart attack. 8)

Well here's the trip report.
After all the flyers I handed out and the people that seemed really intrested . Not one showed .
What a bunch of cant hack it sissy's . I guess im just a bit more hardcore than most around here .
Thats Ok with me. The trip went on .
No radio, No A/C . Just me , the car and my support crew (wife and dog).
After fueling up at the last gas station. (A whole 8.1 gallons is all the car can handle) along with the support vehicles gas , we headed out into the west desert.
(support rig containing extra fuel , coolant, parts and tools) just in case .
About 10 miles later we hit dirt. This short road section used to be pavement but the county decided it was cheaper to tear up the old asphalt than repair it.

Now back on pavement and airing up the tires. The 32 did well with aired down tires (at 18 psi) on the bias-ply's.
Cruising the dirt roads at 45-50 mph . The wash-boarded roads was smooth as glass .

Ever since I saw this (Lincoln Highway) monument on a previous trip . I knew my car had to be here one day.

At the bottom of the canyon we stayed at the campground and found this cool little natural spring.
Which was great after being in the heat all day .

What a great trip. The car passed its final test. Temps stayed at 180 , nothing came loose.
It now has my 100% trust on getting me through a trip.
Big thanks goes out to my support crew (wife, dog and jeep) as I could not have done this without them.

Well Rattiac I guess you could travel at your own pace anyway. I sure would have enjoyed that trip. Some nice history there, (except for the chemical warfare bit :o). I had to google the Simpson Springs Camp to see what the old foundations around there were. Long history of different camps, both of my grandads worked in the CCC's before the WW2. We have a few of the old footings around here left from the old stage lines and military outposts. Thanks for posting pics. :)

Quick note.
As we fueled up a bunch of military rigs passed by . A few miles later just as we reached dirt , they were sitting there. About 10 Hummvee's, an ambulance, and a BIG 5+ ton wrecker . While we aired down we saw them use one of the hummers to practice recovery (getting towed by the wrecker).
Just then that big wrecker pulled up behind us :o and asked if we needed help. I said we were adjusting air-pressure for the long voyage out to Simpson Springs/Lincoln Hwy . They have a button on the dash for that but I thanked them for stopping to check on us. Very cool . 8)
They loved seeing the 32 on dirt and we were in awe of that big monster they were driving.
We watched them head on out down a different dirt road then proceeded on our adventure.
I'd love to be able to ride in one of those bad-boys one day. I wished we would of took pics. It was a site to see .

Thanks for posting the extra pics Rattiac! I read that on the net. I wonder if the stones across the way were the original location of the pony express bldg? Very cool. ;)

I was concerned when I filled up before the trip. My tank only holds about 8.1 gallons :o (about an inch away from the filler-neck) . Good thing I had an extra 5 gall on my roofrack.
After writing down my miles . We did 169 miles fill to fill-up . Averaging about 45 mph on dirt and 60-65 highway. I calculated the milage to be 20mpg . Not bad for a 200hp V6, 3-speed .
Better than my daily driver which only puts out 12mpg (4.0 and overdrive w/ lots of armor)
I'd like to get the cars weight taken one day , just to see. Seems really light .

Drive into any weight scale and ask the fellow if you could weigh your steer axle your drive axle and your total weight i am sure if he is not busy he would be glad to help out a fellow street rodder like yourself vette59jdwl Out in sunny MONTANA
