Running boards/splash approns? 31/32
« on: February 05, 2014, 10:03:59 PM »
Just started the major frame rebuild, boxing, motor/trans mount, x-member, rear assemble.....
and looking at my splash approns, and I know this sounds dumb, but how do you mount them?  When i was mocking things up, i just layed the body down on them, now looking at them, I don't see any actual mounting holes, or places to bolt them to the frame.  Do the fenders and running boards hold them in place while the body lays on top of them?
Any help would be appreciated

I don't know if this helps or not,  I didn't like how the body sat on top of them when they were original and could cause more rust  issues later onlike the originals. What I did was trim them so they would follow just under the sill panels and cowl areas and the drilled a bunch of holes through the splash aprons and the lower body and bolted the two together. This opened up the under side between the frame and splash aprons for better things like trans coolers and such. Oh and I think you are right they were just sandwiched between there with a body matting.

I mocked mine up and I figured they just attached to the bottom of the body, I used self tapping screws since the bottom of my body has been replaced  with square tubing.

I guess they will just get 'sandwiched' between the frame and the subrails, which are metal now.  I'm still a ways off from getting there, but just wanted to make sure i don't need anything more to hold them in before i finish boxing the rails.

I just finished boxing my rails a couple weeks  ago, installed my mustang II cross member and now I'm waiting on a descent day so I can paint my frame and assemble everything.

Maybe a little a 3M strip calk on both sides of the splash apron and sandwich it between the frame and body.

At least that's what I'm planning.
Never underestimate the power of a lubricant.
