Title: wired my car and starter just clicks
Post by: yellowbeard on December 22, 2013, 08:17:54 PM
When I pulled the motor out of donor car, starter worked fine. now that I got it in my car it just clicks. Got the battery ground to the frame. Do I now need to ground the motor to the frame?

When wiring my car I connected the ground from the battery directly to one of the starter bolts.  This is what Ron Francis (the harness manufacturer) had in the instructions for the wiring kit.  Try that and see if it helps.

Yes. I also ran a ground from the body to the frame, just to make sure.

I like to ground the engine to the chassis and chassis to the body to ensure proper grounding for gauges, lights and switches.

Sure sounds like you have a bad connection including power, ground, switch.

What I like to do in other cases is turn on the headlights and try to turn over the car, if the lights don't dim -bad connection- if the lights dim - dead/low battery-.

As stated below you definitely need to ground the engine to the frame if the battery ground is connected to the frame in which case the frame is being used to complete the circuit. On way to see this first hand it to hook a voltmeter between the frame and the engine and  try to engage the starter. If you see the needle on the meter move then you starter is looking for a ground. There can never be too many grounds.

got it, thanks guys. grounded motor to the frame. She is a running car again. It's been awhile. But I did forget to plug off or connect the oil sending unit and puked oil on the floor. Well planning on changing it anyway.
