Use to drink lots of beer and talk about hot rodding.  :o or go camping drink lots of beer and still talk shop.  Does that count? ;D

Nowdays I'm lucky to have a couple of beers a month, and nap a lot. But I still dream hot rods!

I used to build scale models of buildings I imagineered in my mind and sell them on ebay to raise money for hot rod.

Today I took a piece of 5" long 1 1/2" round aluminum bar stock . Made some brackets to go around it to look like a MOON tank. This is for a 31 ford pickup wooden car my friend rick the welder is building.  Saturday we cut up the 1/8" thick dark walnut on his band saw.  I thought 3/32 aluminum TIG welding rod would look perfect between the 1/2" wide wood floor............and it does.

Tried TIG welding the aluminum bar and brackets together at 150 amps, melted the one bracket so made a new pair and will aluminum arc weld it underneath this Saturday.

Trying to talk rick into a 2 tone paint scheme on this hiboy model truck.  Colours......pudding yellow and snot green .

During the winter months I play Ice Hockey once a week with my son and a bunch of other guys.  It’s tough being the old guy trying to keep up with guys 30 years younger than me, some that I coached as kids.  I also try to get out skiing with my daughter a few times over the winter.
Summer time I go bass fishing with my son.  We have a Ranger Bass Boat and will hopefully get my granddaughter out fishing for the first time this summer.  I also like to ride my mountain bike with my wife on some of the rail trails we have here.  I love doing things with my two grand kids.  Lots of family stuff like Ghost and like Sammons I like a beer or two on occasion :D

TOM  I missed seeing you this year at the big car fest in Manchester. I was at a campground in Northern Mass, and the wife and I went out to dinner with Pat and Don Beals. Don has a really nice looking 32.Chevy Roadster .They were great people. Also met a good friend of Dons that had a Plymouth convertible. And yes i Love that white 32 Chevy Roadster. Maybe this year  you never know. vette59jdwl

I spend most of my time corraling my boys! Playing, fishing, wrestling, watching them grow (too fast). Working on the house. I always come up with projects, I actually enjoy working on my house. Working on the house is like working on the car, it's theraputic. I am also a collector of almost anything. And, I too, enjoy an occassional beer.....or three. ;D

My other interest is collecting Case pocket knives, I've been collection knives for over 25 +years. It's a hobby you can do and make money. This was something that my father got me interested in and I passed on to my sons and we all did it together until my father passed away a few years ago.

I spend too much time watching old TV shows and dinking around on my laptop. I shoot things that need it or are just fun to shoot. I fill in the spaces on house fixes that the pros my wife hires don't seem to notice. I keep the water from the springs running into the pipes. I keep the electricity from the solar panels/batteries/generator coursing into the appliances. I keep the propane from the tanks burning in the stove and heaters. I keep the dogs mean and lean so they can keep the coyotes, bears, bobcats. and mountain lyons out of the chicken house. I drink enough beer so I can make up all this BS!  ::)

I thought I would build a flint lock.Kentucky long rifle this winter. I built one fifty years ago it cost about $150 then. I have more then $600 in this one and I still need more parts. Its like building a street rod no end. If you like to have fun you have pay.

I have several old Dixie Gun Works catalogs from the late 60s  to early 70s. It is sad that so much of what is in them is no longer available ay any price. I'd love to be able to buy some of the reproduction "Civil War" rifles for those prices. I need to do some repair on my Hawkin flinter.

Hi sixball  I've had a lot of precision guns but I never even shot a flint. So I thought the flintlock would be cool to hunt with. Check out muzzle loader supply the pricers are lower.  Keep your powder dry!

I have a couple of Dixie gun kits that have never been assembled , one I remember being a kentucky long gun
and the other was a flint lock handgun and a blueing kit as well from Dixie , Now I have to look for them.

You guys got me thinking..always considered buying a .32 caliber long barrel Squirrel gun..maybe a kit is in order. Here's a story about Kentucky long rifle builder.

http://www.fieldandstream.com/articles/hunting/2013/04/hershel-house-guns-kentucky-flintlock

Seems appropriate for a guy building a 32 Chevy to own a 32 long rifle?

Dad gave me his T/C .45 Hawken (percussion, 29"bl). I've had it 16yrs now and still haven't shot it. I had a good friend ("Bear") that belonged to the Jedidiah Smith muzzelloaders club that was going to school me on the "do's and don'ts" of muzzel loading, but he died on me too a couple yrs back. Now I would probably drop it, or it would just plain hurt. :-\

That is a great story. Hershel House is a legend. Hacker Martin was another. Hackers rifles were somewhat crude when compared to the fancy Kentucky rifles. A friend of mine had one and it shot a lot better than it looked. He also had a full stock smooth bore that had belonged to the husband of Daniel Boone's sister, Brian's many greats grandfather. We shot that one too. It was more deadly with shot loads. My first muzzle loader was an original 36 cal. half stock that I payed $67 for. The next one was a 32 full stock made by Nelson Dixon from Dixon, Alabama. He made rifles for the Confederacy. My Great Granddad fought with the 53rd Alabama.  It has a very plain walnut stock with a grease notch in the stock. It is brass mounted. I had to have it bored to 36 cal because the bore was rusty. I payed $125 for it and I have won several matches with it. It is a  squirrel getter.  ;D

When I moved to Kentucky thirty years ago I hunted with a guy who was into Frontier reenactments and owned a Hershel House rifle. He used go over to Hershel's house which is only located about forty miles from where I live now. He would come back and talk about what Hershel was working on and who it was for. Larry my buddy told stories of how Hershel would build the stocks to fit the shooter.

Hunting squirrels with a 32 Holy crap man that's a moose hunting rifle. We hunt squirrels with 22's Me i shoot squirrels with a 22 Hornet.or a 223  As for moose and deer i shoot a 280 Remington pump sighted in for 200 yards. I shoot a 120 grain followed by a 180 grain. Same thing for the 280 Remington semi auto only it is sighted for 100 yards because i use it mostly in the bush.

If you want to shoot a small caliber rifle try a 17hmr  it's a 22mag. necked down to a 17 sweet gun to use on small game I liked my 1st one so well I bought another    WHY ??? I don't know ???

That's why the call it HUNTING. ::)

Vette, everything you mentioned is far more powerful than a 32 muzzle loading squirrel rifle. These things shoot a cloth patched round ball with roughly one grain of black powder per caliber. A .32 round ball weighs a little over 49 grains. A muzzle loader with a .32 ball and 32 grains of FF black powder would have a muzzle velocity of about 2,300 fps. A 22 Hornet will shoot a 50 grain bullet 2,700 fps or a 40 grain at 3,000 fps. A 223 shoots a 50 grain bullet at 3.300 fps and a 45 grain at 3,560. All of those are making a lot more energy than my old smoke pole and if they are using soft point bullets they will all do far more damage to a bushy tail than my .32 round ball. Even a 22 mag with a 45 grain hollow point at 2,000 fps will make a mess of a squirrel or cotton tail. If I'm hunting for the pot I like to use 22 long rifle ammo in a 22 rifle or hand gun. There is enough left to eat. Velocity is not always you friend. If you can make all head shots it's different. I can't.  ;D

Don't freak out this is not what it seems. Watch it as a slide show.  :o  https://picasaweb.google.com/sixpics/PrairieDogs?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCJXin5TSiILX9wE&feat=directlink (https://picasaweb.google.com/sixpics/PrairieDogs?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCJXin5TSiILX9wE&feat=directlink)

Sixball I didnt know a 32 was a smoking stick . In my world a 32 caliber is just a tad bigger than a 30/30 and a little under a 35 caliber of which i have owned and shot both. My 280 in 120 grain is around 3700 ftper sec.

280 Remington is my caliber also, have a Thompson Center Encore Pro Hunter in stainless. Shoots flat out to 300 yards and has a neat history of name changes for marketing etc.

Ed  and it doesn't kick like a 30-06 and shoots flatter. You have to zero it for 200 or better still 300 yards and then know what it does at 100 and 200 yards as well as being bang on at 300/. A 30-06 sighted in for 100 yards drops 26 inches at 200 yards with 280 grain bulits.

Those prairie dogs were in front of a motel we stayed at in Mew Mexico. Lots of people don't realize that the last picture is of ground squirrels. That was about an hour's worth from my yard. They were that big from a diet of chicken feed and eggs. They are nasty little plague carriers. That little 10 22 is way more accurate tan I am.

My son's deer rifles are 243s. They do well with them out to 300 yards. I use my Remington 74 carbine in 30 06 if I'm hunting from a horse or sometimes a 30 40 Kraig. They are the most power I have saddle scabbards for. With the right loads they kill well and recoil is not too bad. I don't need to shoot farther than these old rifles can handle. 8)

A 7-30, cool! Wildcats always interest me. They are the hot rods of firearms. What kind of rifle do you shoot it from?
We were just talking guns at the bar today when a guy shared this picture of his friend. This is recent and it is not known what caused it, maybe the second link gives a clue. That is the bolt of a Weatherby sticking out of his face. He lost his voice box and maybe his right eye. I think he is still in the hospital in Reno. It is only a strong and perfectly functioning action that keeps this from happening with each and every round fired. This is serious machinery. I'll do it with links. Don't look if you don't want to.

I'm putting it thru a Winchester model94xtr 7x30 waters  I run up on this gun in a gun shop in Louisville Ky. back in the 80's They had it on clearance because this caliber wasn't selling well, He even threw in a set of Lee dies for it. I wish I had keep it in the box with all the paper work. :o

Winchester was doing a lot back then to try and breathe life back into their old lever guns. A lot of the western craze was over and reproduction imports had cut deeply into the 94's sales. The stamped parts in the Japanese production had not helped so they tried better finish and some new chamberings. Some of those are really cool finds now. If I was a collector I'd want a basic 94 collection of a long rifle and a carbine in each of the original 5 chamberings. Nothing fancy just working rifles, shooters. I should have done it is the 60s when they were cheap. :)

Any of the old style round ball muzzler loaders up to .54 cal properly loaded don't kick as much as a 30 30 carbine. When you start double charging and going to heavy conical bullets things change.

Too much gun talk: Sorry, my folks made me take accordion lessons for 5 years and it made me mean. >:(    ;D

I'll have to say i'm partial to cowbow style lever actions too! I've sold off most everything else,  but not them. Half Winchesters, half Marlins. My favorite is grandads 108 year old model 94 .32 W.S. 26" octagon barrel. He used it (with homemade scabbard) as his saddle rifle. Damn thing is heavy. I took my aunt out last summer so she could shoot her "daddy's" rifle. I warned her of the kick, two days later she had a big bruise. ;D

I have a small music studio in my basement and have played with local wedding/bar bands for the last twenty years. Tom, you can stop by and play my drums any time you like. Hmmm, guns n music.
Tried to learn guitar once, couldn't be bothered.
Have customer who's an officer at local shooting range, who drags me out sometimes to play with pistols. I can shoot most of em good, but mostly miss with his Desert Eagal. That's a badass gun.
As to my interests, I do a little gardening to relax, have studied seven different Martial arts disciplines over last forty years, I cook, and make up my own recipies, I built scale hot rods, and have done for nearly forty years, used to pig hunt, but haven't been out for over ten years, I draw a little for fun, but as I draw for my day job, inserting pigment into peoples flesh, I don't draw outer work as much as I'd like, and I try to spend as much time with the five year old as I can. She off to school soon, so won't be half as much time anymore.
Used to canoe a bit, and now that my old one has been finished getting rebuilt, I hope to get out before Summers end. I do a lot of polishing old things for people, but only if it interests me, cause polishing kinda sucks.
All this, and I don't have ADD.

Ratiac, what type of Jeeps do you run?  I really like the oldies (mid 40's). Got hooked on them right out of high school, preffer the original "Go Devil" L head. I had one with a 265 v8 Chevy conversion, didn't like it. The problem around here is finding hills to climb.  My little CJ2A use to out climb ,or faster up, the steep ones than the other V8 ones.

My freind lived out around Moab for a couple years. He kept telling me to bring my old flat fender out, that I would have a blast. Wish I had!

Living in Nevada which is in some way 87% government owned 4 wheeling is a major activity but tens of thousands of acres have been removed from public use and mere is coming. You better get out here before it's covered with wind and solar farms or wilderness.

Logride,
I helped my buddy out with a full on resoration on his 1950 M38 several years ago, (he wanted a MB WW2,  but couldn't find one at a decent price). It's sweeeet! But he spent $15,000 + on the restoration.  It came out of Colorado in the 70's when a local merchant bought it as transportation to get to his cabin in the Colo. mountains.  They sold it when they bought an early Bronco for comfort. The 24v wiring had been hacked down to 12v and part of the water proofing Ign. was missing along with most of the deep water fording opt. Unbelievable was the fact that it wasn't rusty anywhere. I failed to get a pic of it though, i'll have to get one when he gets it back out.

Not so many years ago every little mountain town in this country had lots of old Jeeps. There was almost a Holiday spirit at the beginning of deer season or the first snow when the old Jeeps were brought out for the season. They were like Autumn decorations that lined the streets and not taken down until spring. Some had tops, some cloth some metal. Some had snow plows. Some had tire chains that had not been off for years. Most were military many were still OD. A lot were brush painted with paint left over from other projects. They had a very specialized use. They rarely got the respect they had earned. They were almost as common as a wood stove. As more modern, comfortable and easily driven 4X4s came along most of these old war horses were retired. I am sure that there are still thousands of them in garages, barns, and sheds especially in the mountainous and desert areas of this country. Someday I'll find one sitting in a dark corner that no one wants.  ::)

I stopped in his shop one day to see when he wanted me to start the bodywork, we walked into his office and he pulled out a box of receipts.  He said, i've got to stop again. This is way more expensive than I thought. I couldn't believe the cost of some of the N.O.S. 24v stuff (generator, distributor, etc) The tranny had gears with teeth missing, frt and rear diffs were wore. When I said "full on restoration" I ment just that. Every component was overhauled/replaced, and a bunch of components where N.O.S. You can just about rebuild two small block chevy's for the same money as one L-134.  :-\

He spent 7 years collecting parts (from all over the country) and assembling components. I told him there was no way he would ever get his money back on that kind of investment,  He said, I know but i'm never selling it. (Famous last words) I found out when collecting MB parts to clone my '46 CJ2A. Military parts are $$$$$   ;D

Ratiac, what type of Jeeps do you run?

I had a 89 Wrangler (YJ) w/ the 2.5 four-banger. Had it caged, and I built rock-sliders and bumpers , on board air, ect.  It had 4in lift , 4;10 gears and 31's . Ive taken it places where people said you cant get to without 35's . It didnt haul my trailer very well on the freeway so it got sold last year .
My current ride is a 98 Cherokee with a 4.0ltr . Much better on the freeway . Built just as good but a bit lower .

Sixball;
I know what ya mean . Senator Hatch is trying to get the Dugway expansion through.
Expanding by 70,000 acre's . They say its a buffer zone and they may need to close some roads "occasionally" to retrieve bombs or explosives  . This includes part of the Pony Express route, Hastings Pass, Knolls , and some of the Newfoundland Mtns .
I think its BS but thats the government . Dugway is big enough in my opinion.

On my next trip I'll post some pics for yall .

I'm looking at buying a Land Rover 4x4. Its not a jeep, but it'll get me places the hot rod won't. Maybe it'll be a new hobby.

Our most recent trip 2 weeks ago.
Capitol Reef NP.

Trip started of with a river crossing. I checked the depth first to make sure the teardrop wasnt gonna get wet. Then a few miles later we saw this.

Running out of daylight we bee-lined for the campground. Set up camp about 10 at night.
After our last gas-up we were at 50 miles when we got to camp. Alot of ground left to cover.
Looking down from our camground into Cathedral Valley.

From there the scenery went from Red's to white colors of rock/dirt.
At 147 miles we reached the highway. A few miles later back to dirt.
Entering the Water pocket fold area . 20 miles later we hit camp .
Lots of cool stuff to see in this region .

After a short hike leads to an overlook of the Strike Ravine (Waterpocket fold) .
This goes on for 100 miles .

At 200 miles we hit pavement again. Stopped in Boulder for fuel and checked out some stuff then it was back to Torrey for a night stay at a RV park. Going through Escalante N.P. was very scenic also.

Touring Fruita the next day before heading home .
Fruita schoolhouse .

Rattiac,
Great pics thanks for posting!  I've been through Utah years ago but didn't get to stop and see much.  Going to have to put it on my list to get back and see.  I did make it to Arches and Canyonlands National Parks last year when we stayed in Durango Co.  It was beautiful country.

The kids and I were in Zion National park last week.

We hiked a famous trail called Angels landing. No guard rails. A chain to hang on in spots.

The sign said 6 people have fallen to their deaths since 2004.

Personal responsibility.
