Title: 1929 Hudson Pick Up.
Post by: Kiwijeff on January 13, 2014, 02:14:29 AM
I was asked for some before and after, pics of my Hudson, but its going to be, after and before pics :) Im allowed to do it backward, due to living in the Southern Hemisphere. Haha, we do things back to front down here. Please excuse the wrong sided steering, it was ok untill some fella named Ford decided to put it on the other side. They say even the toilets flush backward down here...

The cab is from a 29 Hudson Super six. Chassis is 82 Toyota ute, engine is 84 Holden six, with a 5 speed Toyota box, and diff. Grille is 29 Chevy, and wheels are Ford Themes.

The rusty pics are how it looked when the builder found it, and the blue with grey scollop pics, are how it was, after a six year build by the original builder. I brought it from him, stripped it down, and spent five months, painting and polishing, untill it came out as the black n flamed version you see now.

Wow Jeff it's come a long way!  I like what you've done with it.  Can't be too heavy so it must go good with that six.

It goes very well Tom, the engine is stock for now, and runs nice. I have plans for triple carbs, headers, and swap out the awful multi colored plug leads for black ones. For now, its all legal, it runs well with a nice balanced chassis and running gear combo, so i drive it almost every day. Must get some windows in the doors, i live in a high rainfall area, but its cheap air con in the summer :D

The hand you can see under the dash is my cowl vent handle. When im asked what its for, i answer, its in case im out in it by myself, and i need a hand. That always gets a laugh. Heres a couple more pics.

I've been doing a lot of cosmetic stuff to the Hudson over the Winter. Brought a finned alloy rocker cover, that will go on when I get done polishing it. Have new finned coil cover, chrome oil filter cover, new leads, plugs points and condenser.
I've put a stained and varnished piece of plywood in my deck, and in the process of making a vinyl covered roof. Using thick plywood, that I've route red out slots for the ugly bars that are welded on the roof. Once its finished, I will cover with foam, then black vinyl.
Here's some pics.

I saw this Kiwi famous Jeep going to my neighbors, so I shot down to say hi to the owners (who are related to famous Kiwi/Canadian bushman/saw guy), and get some pics.
This Jeep was drag raced in the 70s, and onwards with supercharged Chev V8s.

I remember watching an episode on "Car Crazy" about the annual classic car show in New Zealand. It is called the "Americarna" and is a traveling car show to recognize American Classics.  The traveling car show starts at one end of NZ and travels to the other.

What made me feel proud was watching the streets lined with Kiwis holding American Flags as the cars drove through each small town.  We hear about the countries that don't like the USA...but here is one that I have a lot of respect for.  Good Bless New Zealand!

Here is the Americarna web site:

Yes, Ed, I remember that Car Crazy episode too. I don't think everyone hates us as much as the liberal media would have us believe.

They may not like us as much as they like what we do.  There are always lots of Southern Hemisphere English speakers at Bonneville. You gotta' love 'em they are so dedicated. 8)

The Jeep was flogged in the mid 70s by the Shadwick brothers. I used to read about it as a teenager in NZ Hot Rod Magazine.
As to everyone disliking Americans, I think its more the Arab world. I myself have quite a few American friends and even a few American customers.
Actually, I have customers from many countries, and my old studio of 11 years, that I closed in 2010, was next door to an Israely backpackers.
I used to get many different nationallites through my door. Never had issues with any nation as a whole. Only individuals, and I've run my share of em out the door. People world wide are mostly good. One of the nicest guys I ever met, is from the Middle East, who has lived here for many years.
I'm just not sure about those Hobbits though  ;D

I think the engine may be a Cummings. I know the builder said it had around 500 HP.

Ha, locals here would be in fits over that, we get lots of rain, our beach is all rocks, stones, drift wood and rubbish.
The river mouth kills, and I've lost several friends, including one of my best only two years ago when his fishing boat flipped coming in.

That said, we have clean water, and no shortage of it. Theres pigs and deer in the hills to eat, we have no venomious creatures, only an Aussy import nasty spider called a white tail.
No ones in a hurry here, cept city folk. We dont get snow this close to the sea, but inland sure does.
Id be well off if i lived and worked in a city, but i love living here, grew up two blocks away from where i live now. Theres not the same amount of work here for me, but i sure am kept busy with lotsof cool stuff.

I plan on putting a red tuck n roll interior in this pile, so brought some red seat covers to get a feel for the color. I hate covers on furniture, but there's a purpose here, so I got what I could find, but they have an ugly logo on em.
Solution was to have some Hudson emblems printed, and sew em over ugly logo.
Moose found me a great pic of the one year only (1929) emblem, and just got back from picking them up.
Now I Gotter find someone to sew em on.  :)

I asked my Mom if she would sew the emblems on the seat covers.

I wish I had a Mom. :(
After looking at your earlier photos, I've been doing a little research and I have found that it is fairly safe to drive on the wrong side of the road if you do it in a country where everyone else does it too. Not so much here. ::).

Ha, safe it ain't, this year.
Were having one or two tourist crashes every week.
A few weeks back, a couple in their 70s, was driving their restored 38 Chevy Coupe home, when a couple of Americans turned right in front of em. The Chev owners are in hospital, and the 38 is a mess.
We have some tight twisty roads, and our overseas guests have no idea how to drive em, and a lot seem to drive like total idiots.
Its a huge problem at the moment.
Haven't forgotten your pics, Six ball.

Ghost, I have no idea, and the original builder doesn't either. I had planned on swapping them over and building a taller deck, but that won't be this year.
I've finally mounted the Guides that I brought over a year ago, will just hook em up without the LED park, indicator lights for now, as too many sparkys don't seem to have a clue how to hook em up.
From what I've read, they need resistors, but some sparkys here say they may not be needed.
To many different opinions.
I also have my new triple carb finned manifold on its way here from Australia, and I've brought another Holden six, to rebuild with some serious speed equipment.
Time to go buy an engine stand.

No 250. Holdens are,
Early, 138
161
173
179
186
202
Then in early 80s, 3.3.
My Hudson is certified for a 186, the best Holden six made, but I'm running a 3.3.
I'd like to put it back to a 186, for legal reasons, and also so it doesn't bite me in the ass, if I ever sell it.

Tom, I'm going to buy an engine stand, and once I get the new 186 I've just brought, I'll get it all mocked up on the stand.
I'm planning on slowly building it into a hot street engine, as funds allow.
I'll be putting up pics of it mocked up. I'll be to excited not to share.  :D

I think that will be way to cool. I do understand that they made a intake manuifold for the 23 / 250 with a four barrell and Brazil got to get the fuel injected 250 ,Now that would be way to cool. But i can not tackle that till spring  and then we will have to wait and see what happens  good luck with your 186    vette59jdwl

I guess I better go hunt some more down.
Ordered and played for new rear tires, and they have a one and quarter inch white wall on one side.

Thanks for the likes guys, yes I slowly getting colder here, and it's getting dark sooner.
The truck probably looks shinier due to my new phone.
I've got a five megapixel camera now, instead of a two.

Figured since I had to remove grille she'll, to take old ugly indicators off, that I may as well get my buddy Baz, to cut out the ugly in shell, and patch it. I'm going to look into price for chroming the shell this Winter.
