Title: Seeing The USA In A Chevrolet
Post by: TFoch on July 22, 2013, 06:47:54 PM
My wife and I are on vacation.  We flew out to Denver last Friday and hopped into our rental, a 2013 Chevy Camaro RS Convertible.  I know it’s not an early 30’s Chevy but it’s the best Avis could offer.  We drove towards Yellowstone National Park staying overnight part way.  We arrived at Yellowstone Saturday morning with the top down ready to see some sights.  Here’s a few pics (to keep Moose happy!).  We are now on our way to the Black Hills of South Dakota.  To be continued…

Tom

I'd say it's hard to beat the scenery  in Yellowstone...Those are some great pictures.
Don't let yourself get spoiled by driving that nice new Camaro convert and just remember anyone can buy a new car but your 33 is one of a kind!

Oh yeah...Don't worry about those stories  the geologist keep telling us about Yellowstone being the most likely place for a super volcano to erupt in the at any point in time....How fast did you say a 2013 Camaro can go???

Oh yeah I forgot to mention we end our vacation at a cruise night in Denver.  I'd prefer to have the 33 there but that's a long drive!

Lots of hot bubbling springs there but we made it out before any catastrophe!

Thanks Chopper.  We made our way east from Yellowstone to South Dakota.  The drive out of the park was steep and winding.  Lots of spectacular views to see through the windshield.  We had a stop at Devils Tower in Wyoming and then made our way through Sturgis.  Last night we visited Mount Rushmore and watched the lighting ceremony,  Very patriotic!  To be continued…

Thanks for posting some more of those great pictures! Someday I gotta get out to see Mount Rushmore!

A little trivia for you guys.....When the proclamation establishing Devils Tower as a national monument was published, the apostrophe was unintentionally dropped from “Devil’s”—and this clerical error was never officially corrected....Who knew or maybe your saying who cares ;)

For our last day in South Dakota we made our way to Deadwood.  Cool little town with an old west feel on the main street.  We saw this old truck parked there and on the way out we saw this old Texaco Station restored and turned into a speed shop.  Boondock's was on the way back to our cabin in Hill City.

The last full day of our vacation was spent driving back to Denver.  In all we put 2,308 miles on the Camaro.  We spent the last evening at two Cruise Nights in Aurora.  The first one was at Rosie's Diner and we got to meet Ray Prager and his wife Geri (hope I spelled it right).  My wife and I had a great time there and we got to check out Ray's truck.  Nice job Ray!  From there we followed Geri to the next Cruise at the Sonic in Aurora.

The Sonic Cruise was a blast.  I got to meet John (Ghost28).  We've been talking on line for over 6 years so it was great to finally meet.  We got to check out the 28 he's finishing and there were a few other old Chevys there.  The I was lucky enough to get a ride in his son in laws wild roadster with a blown hemi.  It definitely messed up my hair.  What a wild ride!

We ended the evening with a trip over to John's house to check out the Buick Roadster.  It is going to be a really cool ride.  John, Ray Geri my wife and I sat around and chatted for a while before it was time to go.  It was a great way to end the vacation and I'd like to thank John, Ray and Geri for their hospitality.  My wife Elaine and I felt like we were hanging out with old friends.  I hope we get to do it again!

I haven't been posting much this week as my wife and I are off seeing the USA.  We are in Nashville Tennessee for the week.  We took a road trip down to Memphis and visited Graceland.  It was worth the trip!  The trip through his home was great.  It is preserved like it was in the late seventies.  We got to see the Pink Cadillac he gave his mom in the Auto Museum.
We went to tour Sun Records Recording Studio where he and others recorded their first hits.  They had some of the old equipment they used back in the day.  I even got to hold the microphone that Elvis sang into.  Really cool!
Took a trip down Beale Street and had a beer at BB Kings Blues Club.  Great week so far.

No Elvis had left the building  :)  But we did stop at Antique Archeology (American Pickers) in the old Marathon Automobile Factory in Nashville.  Didn't see Frank or Mike but saw some cool old bikes and parts.

Seeing a different part of the USA in a Chevrolet.  This time my rental is a 2013 Camaro SS Convertible with a V8.  First place we checked out was Roswell NM.  Had to see if there were any aliens still hanging around.  We took in the UFO museum and visited the former Air Force base where the government allegedly took what it found at the crash site. Check out the street lamps from downtown.  Heading north from here.

No I wish we would have had more time.  We drove through the airport but it was Sunday morning and not much open.  Should have done more research before we went.

Headed up to Durango Colorado and took the Narrow Gauge Train to Silverton.  It's a 3 1/2 hour 45 mile trip along some steep cliffs to an old mining town with a steam engine.  It goes up in elevation from 6,512 ft to 9,308 ft.  When we arrived in Silverton some of the restaurant owners were using classic vehicles to advertise.  Here are a few.  Sorry no Chevys but the Checker had a Chevy in it.

Thanks Moose. We had a great time staying Durango Colorado.  We saw Mesa Verde, Arches, Canyon Lands and Black Canyon National Parks.  We also saw Natural Bridges and Hovenweep National Monuments.  We drove the Million Dollar Highway (wish it was in the 33!).  We put 2,260 miles on the Camaro in 9 days.  It is a beautiful part of the country and I would recommend it for a vacation if you love great scenery.  Here's a few final pics

Tom, sounds like you had a great time.  Your pics bring back fond memories,  my grandparents took me and little brother on vacation there for several years back in the mid/late 60's. Doesn't look any different.  And yes in a Chevrolet, a brand new '66 Impala wagon ( grandpa bought grandma for Valintines day)

We do enjoy going out west and seeing the great landscape out there.  Sammons that must have been a fun trip as kids.  I still remember the television ads with the song "See The USA In A Chevrolet".  Ghost, hopefully I will get to do it in the 33 someday.  That would be a blast.  Haven't picked a destination for next year yet.  Have to throw a dart at the map on my wall :)

Just got back from a weeks vacation in Reno Nevada.  Got to see the Rockabilly Riot car show the first day we were there (posted pics in another thread).  Some great looking Chevys and more than I thought I'd see.  While out there we went to Lassen Volcanic National Park and Yosemite National Park.  Both are worth seeing, very beautiful.  Yosemite was the first national park we visited 34 years ago the summer before we got married.  We visited the Mariposa Grove Sequoia Trees to recreate a few pictures  from from our first visit.  The highlight of Yosemite was sitting outside our cabin and having a black bear run by us about 20 feet away!  Surprised the crap out of us.  We took a ride around Lake Tahoe and then took a scenic ride to Virginia City where I got to hangout with Sixball and have a couple of beers with him.  Had a great vacation.  Sucks to have to go back to work!
First pic is Bumpass Hell in Lassen
Second is the Grizzly Giant in Yosemite
Third is the view looking into Yosemite Valley
Fourth is Virginia City

Anybody following the O'brien family?  Now this is what it's all about, 50 day road trip. Wife, kids and a '59 Chevy wagon. Santa Barbra Ca. to Chicago, down to Florida along the gulf up through Branson, to KKOA Lead sled spect.in Salina and back to Ca. They stopped last night in Greensburg when a storm front came thru, I missed them this morn when the came thru here headed to Dodge City. That trip is really going to be a memory for them.  ;) truly seeing the U.S.A. in a Chevrolet. I wish them the best.

You can catch them on " surfcaliforniasurf " on the H.A.M.B. or on instagram #obriensgoingforbroke .
 Oh, and NO A/C! :o

Just got back today from a road trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  Made it all the way out to Grand Forks North Dakota.  Will post pics later.  It was 3,616 miles round trip from Manchester New Hampshire in 8 days.  If you're wondering why the wife and I put on all those miles, we've traveled 44 out of the lower 48 states.  We needed to drive through Wisconsin, Minnesota and North Dakota.  Now that this trip is complete, the last state we need to travel to is Louisiana.  Guess we'll have to plan a trip to New Orleans to complete the lower 48 ;D
