Here's a couple quick questions for you guys who have gotten as far as interior work. I made panels out of 1/8" luan and want to cover them in foam-backed black vinyl. What's a good foam thickness? I see 1/8", 3/16" and 1/4. I don't want the padding to be too think or look too plush. Also, has anyone used a non-commercial sewing machine to stitch up their upholstery with any success? Thanks.

Chopper, I prefer the 1/8" foam. Easy to work with and sew. As to the home sewing machine, as long as the vinyl is not really heavy you should have no problem unless you sew more than 3 layers at a time. I had my neighbor lady sew up new inserts in my Camaro years ago, she said it was no problem at all with her home unit. I have a commercial machine for the heavy stuff. (Tarps, belts, heavy weight leather, etc)

If you are using piping, test first. With a good machine it should work.

take a look at the foam that is used on a poker table, it's 1/8 thick and pretty dense great for covering any type of panels. You can great creative with some type design and give your panels a raised areas.

Thanks guys. I'll go with the 1/8" and try my sewing machine with the biggest needle and thread I can fit!

Keep us posted on your progress.  I'm interested to see how you do.  I'll have to start thinking about my interior so having you as a guinea pig works for me   Moose had posted some good info for carpeting and binding in the tech section if you're interested.
