Not letting Bonneville speedweek sneak up on me this year. Hoping to have the truck ready for it's first trip (tow testing) ;)
Would like to park by the long course and see em go by.
Anyone here have a favorite car or other ?
There's a new sleek green streamliner that has a wild shape.
Heard the sign just recently got stolen again. 😶
-
There is a lotion the HAMB about the sign. My favorite spot is near the fueling station near the pits. The food is pretty close and there are porta potties. It is just going into mile 3 so they a cooking. You can hear them pulling from the start and the doppler effect is awesome. Don't take anything out on the salt you don't want to spend A LOT of time desalting. There is some kind of salt neutralizing stuff that a lot of people use before they go. I recommend it, my pickup still has salt from 2013.
Depending on how many courses they have this year it is great to go out about 5 miles and get the full experience. Know where you are. I don't know if I'll make it this year or not this year.
-
I don't know much about Bonneville, but I got a little education here:
https://www.hagerty.com/media/motorsports/understanding-bonneville-streamliners-lakesters-and-roadsters/
-
The classes and rules at Bonneville are certainly very involved and can be confusion. The good thing is that you don't have to understand it to enjoy it. Most of the rules as far as engines and body classes, separate things, are almost the same as the other land speed events, (Dry Lakes)
It has out of necessity evolved a lot from the pre WWII days when you pretty much run what you brung and many of the racers were driven to the events. Safety is a big deal and just meeting safety requirement is a major part of the expense.
-
Just under 2 weeks till Speedweek. Getting exited 🤪.
The last few years ive been playing the live stream at work on my phone. My boss enjoys it.
Looks like this year they are setting up a camera for the live stream guy (seldom seen slim).

Salt conditions are hard and dry. No water near "lands end" .
Looks like a great year to go in person.
I was going to head out that saturday morning but now friday night 5pm is looking pretty tempting .
Heres a cool video from last year.

The sexy green streamliner called the "Salt Shark" is my new favorite. Some out of the box thinking going on there.
-
I'd like to go. Maybe I can talk my son into going out for a day or two. No one left to drive out with since my best friend died out there a couple of years ago. :(
-
Thousands of miles away...only a dream.
-
To far to travel by car for me :(
-
Hot August Nights firing up today in Virginia City through August 7, Bonnivelle Speed Week August 7-13 & World of Speed September 10-13. Inliners International Convention Carson City September 28-October 3. Lots going on here. I need to air up my tires. :o
-
Salt lake got pounded with rain the other day but none of it hit the saltflats. Been dry all week.
Trailer is ready for hook up and go. Probably taking the jeep. Truck needs an alignment and no time for that this week, in charge of the shop again. Bosses knee was replaced and got infected. :o
The Bonneville sign was replaced and the salt looks great from the camera thats out there.
-
Take lots of pictures and be sure to get to salt off of EVERYTHIHG!
I won't make it & it doesn't look like I'll make it to any Hot August nights events either. One of the friends that was helping me on my roadster died unexpectedly of cancer and we are helping his family deal with his massive "collection" of cars, tools, guns, boats, parts,......... before the predators move in.
-
Have a great time Rattiac, and yes, take pictures and share them.
Sixball, I'm sorry to hear about your friend.
-
Sorry about your friend Sixball.
Super smokey here this morning, cant even see the mountains thats only a few miles away.
Salt flats looks like mars from the camera.
Check out the link above (LSR) for the updates, streaming which has been expanded to FB, twitter.
Should be leaving early morning unless I leave tonight. I'll bring back plenty of pics and video.
Talk to yall sunday evening. 🍻
-
Have a good time! LeRoy and I got the frame table here today and s a '28-'29 Model A pickup moved today. Three new dings in the Silverado, tight spots between things that don't run. LeRoy's son showed up and they were going to try to move a couple more tonight. I left my trailer there for them to use tomorrow. My son and I are going to the HAN swap meet tomorrow. We need the time. ;D
-
A great day on the salt. Parked about halfway between the starting line and the pits, watched the long course .
Soooooo many hotrods, more with patina than paint . Glad I brought the rolling hotel with ez-up.
After a few hours I cruised the pits, then made my way to the starting line.
Left about 5:45pm , camped in Knolls, Ut right on the flats but was very slippery, headed to harder ground near the edge.
Quick video.
https://youtu.be/v8ZMqSU_qL4
-
The ones with patina had paint last year. :o ;D Those are the friendliest pits you'll find anywhere.
Did you see these guys? A Canada & Texas crew.
-
Those pits go for miles 8). I just did a slow cruise through the pits.
Couldnt find my sunscreen for a few hours and got burned/exhausted somewhat early.
More pics to come. It wasnt bringing up my recent pics, yet.
Was gonna stay at the bend in road but I had some fireworks to light off, didnt want to get busted 😉.
Uploaded a few more quick videos.
-
The west is on fire and you are shooting off fireworks? You should get busted. Maybe way out on the flats.
-
The west is on fire and you are shooting off fireworks? You should get busted. Maybe way out on the flats.
Yeah, I was way out on the flats when I lit them off. 😏
.
-
I figured just because of where you live. ::)
-
A guy I know called on his way back from Bonneville today and is interested in a 413 ci Dodge flathead six I have. It is something I know I'll never use and it will clear some space I need. He has plans for a big speedster and has the connections to make it work. He's in my local Inliner chapter so it won't be far away and I'll get to see it when it's done. 8)
-

Yeah, I was way out on the flats when I lit them off. 😏
I guess I dont need to share pics on here anymore.
You keep those pictures coming Rattiac! Where I live Bonneville isn't even mentioned. You guys that live out there or make the journey are giving me a bit of an education.
-
Well they are sideways. Tried rotating it on my phone but still ended up that way.
Tons of video footage i'll be editing soon.
Speed-Demon backed up yesterdays run this morning of 475mph. 😶
Here "impound" is a good thing. Means ya set a record but have to back it up the next morning (within a few mph) to get the record.
Saturday had 20 vehicles in impound.
-
More pics.
-
It is hard not to just keep taking pictures. :o You need a bigger lens than I have to get the ones you want. ;D
-
2 years ago I picked up a Panasonic G7 (mirrorless) camera. The kit came with a Macro (wide angle) lens and a 25x zoom lens.
I used the zoom lens all day but it wasnt enough to see course #2 & 3 very well. It also came with lens filters (u.v. and such).
Since its soooo bright out there, I attatched the
ND-8 filter to lessen the light. (Like sunglasses for cameras) . It helped greatly.
It was hard to see the camera screen so I locked the horizon (up/down) on the tri-pod and aimed/followed the cars with the camera.
Worked out great, once I saw the footage.
Next year I'll be getting a 150-300 zoom lens.
I shouldve gotten closer to the starting line but was still trying to social distance.
Lessons learned for next time.
-
I love the sound. it's not like any thing else. Where else can you hear powerful engines pulling at full throttle for miles and miles?
The sun reflecting off the salt can produce some unusual sunburns. Like inside your nose or up your shorts or shirt sleeves or under your hat brim. Think one sun in the sky and one on the ground.
-
This guy has some good videos from this week.
https://youtu.be/oB84nT3UEK0
-
That makes me sad I missed it again but it makes me happy that you were there. :( :) 8)
-
Kinda want to go back for World of speed in Sept.
If it remains dry.
-
Packing up tonight and heading out at 5 a.m.
Salt report is still good, had some rain after speedweek but not much.
The Nish streamliner team is a local team, already there. Cant wait to see them run.
If you get into landspeed racing, this is where you want to begin with the 130mph club.
Lots of street worthy cars going for it.
The only requirements are speed rated tires and steel valve stems.
This time im getting near the starting line to watch the "impound" cars go first. They get first crack at cool air.
-
Please take & post lots of pictures. You are right this is the place to start, have fun, and decide if the rest is worth the BS. ::)
-
Sounds like they had a windstorm and shut down around 4pm.
5 cars and 3 cycles in impound.
Salt opens up at 6am. Earlier than normal, tryin to beat some weather.
All hooked up and ready to go. I Better get some sleep🥱.
-
Went to my Inliner meeting and now am sitting and waiting for your update. It's a beautiful day here. Sunny warm & smoke free.
-
I left later than I wanted. Arrived on the salt at 9:30am. No biggie though cause they started 2hrs late from a storm that came through.
Truck did great and didnt leak a drop of oil on the salt.
Went straight to the starting line (long course) then worked my way to the 130-150 lines.
After a few hours I made my way to the pits. Grabbed some lunch at the Enola Gay Cafe and picked up a few shirts along with one of those hats that cover the neck/ears. Glad I did.
Watched a few cars come by the 3 mile at full throttle. That sound i'll never forget.
By 2pm a threatning storm was approaching, so I went back to the start line. Hung out there and filmed nearly every car there till 5pm.
After that I made my way towards camp at Knolls 40 miles away. Even though it was cloudy off/on most of the day, heat exhaustion can sneak up on you. Didnt feel the effects of it till this morning waking up sick with vomiting.
Proceeded to slug water till I felt good enough to drive home.
Anyways get ready for pics. When it lets me.
Here's a few quick vids.

Most people have to experience the harshness of that environment to understand it. In some cases it can pull the moisture out of you faster than you can replace it. Glad you are OK and looking forward to pictures. We spent the day at our cabin at Tahoe being thankful they are getting a handle on the fire near South Shore.
-
Yeah I thought I was being careful about not too much sunlight, taking breaks in the trailer. Next year i'll drink more water beforehand.
hopefully it brings up the pics now. :)
-
This camaro needed a cage just to run in the 130 class because of the T-tops.
This year he was going for 150.
-
Gotta love that black 57 going for it. 8)
The Chevelle was like a show car. He had to do a "handling run" under 100mph before he could open it up.
Straight 8 in the lakester.
-
Noticed alot of Dodge Dakotas out there, even the officials drive em.
A few Dakotas parked next to me. This guy had a "in progress build" he was having tech look at it to make sure its all legal.
On the way home the desert was lit up yellow from the recent rains 🌧.
-
Some nice stuff. Like the mopar coupe. There seems to be a different look from Speed Week.
-
Its a bit more relaxed and less people. As the USFRA says, the event is put on by racers for racers. Its a more grass-roots feel.
Id like to race something here one day.
Theres even a 50cc roadster class. Though they are slow but enjoyable to watch. Sound like they never shift. Total bare bones and skinny wire wheels .
One last pic.
The black car looks near stock but very loud when fired up.
Saw/heard him come by at the top end. Sounded awesome. 🔥
The 93 camaro, the areo dosent get better than that. 😉
-
Quick story::;
There was a guy there with a Police edition crown vic totally stock. He ripped out the interior, installed race buckets/harness, straight piped it and removed the air filter.
Ran 116mph. While he thought it shoulda been more, it was all about the low buck good time with his kids. Miles per smiles .
His car had alot of interested onlookers.
-
Sounds like a lot of fun. It would be fun to put something cheap together and just play. What rules do they use?
-
Some sharp cars there, Rattiac, thanks for sharing.
-
Here's a cool vid from the camaro owner pictured above. 8)

Thanks! Great video! I'm not a Camaro guy, I'd take the Plymouth Coupe in a heartbeat. But anything at Bonneville over rules my year, make, model prejudices. That is a good-looking great sounding Camaro. He needs to talk to some of the guys at the local bar I frequent, all of their pickups go 150+. ;D This keeps looking like a better choice for fun runners than Speed Week which has gotten crazy in the last few years. Climate change is going to give us some more dry lakes. Every non rain cloud has a silver lining. ::)

Is this the bar you're talking about?
-
No, I was thinking of the one closer to home. But I was in that one last night. :)
The VC guys only race Camels. ::)
-
It's only June and already thinking of Bonneville.
Didn't get a good winter this year so im guessing the salt should be dry like last year. My schedule is clear for August and have a new 300mm lens . Can't wait.
-
I'm still trying to decide. Too many things pile up at the end os summer.
-
Cause of Burden-gas I think this year I'll skip speedweek and just do the USFRA world of Speed in September 7-12th .
It still has the long course stuff and big speeds .
Having the trailer was nice to keep out of the sun 🌞.
-
Im almost tempted to head out there Friday night so I can see the sunrise on the salt.
Who knows what'll happen by September.
This all depends on possible rain this week .
-
It is so crazy that we can have months of drought and the one week it needs to be dry??? I can't go again this year. So near yet so far away. :(
-
In Salt Lake we got a pretty good storm and checking in on landracing.com it looks like they got a storm also. Seldom seen slims truck has salt packed in the wheel wells. 😳
Looks like a no-go for me. We'll see what Sept has to offer.
-
After work yesterday I wire brushed, sanded and painted the trailers frame.
Reports from the salt says::; there's a inch of standing water at "lands end " from last night's storm and nobody is allowed on the salt right now.
Not canceled just postponed a few hours.
Well that confirms it for me, was hoping to see the record return runs in the morning. Oh well.
On a side note a fellow youtuber gave me a really nice tripod with a fluid head for super smooth footage.
This monsoon weather should be over by September.
-
Officially canceled from last night's storm.
-
Bummer! The rain we've been getting here is welcome but I heard some "pretty car" guys bitching yesterday at Hot August nights. If you're that picky get an inclosed trailer. ;D
-
I guess I could've gone out and done recoveries.
Didn't even think about that till my boss said something this morning. :o
-
NO! You don't want to take a rig you plan to keep and run it it that brine. It gets everywhere water gets and the more pressure you use to get it off the further you drive it in. There are treatments but years later you'll know if they work or not. My pickup is suffering from 2008 & 2012. It seized the choke cable! I only hit a couple of patches of wet salt, no standing water.
-
I was thinking about the camping area called "bend in the road ". Super muddy mess there. Bunch of cars, trucks and RV's stuck.
Some YT videos showing how deep that water was.
Local high-school kids were doing car washes to help out.
Wendover lost revenue from the cancelation.
-
The bend is where we camp. It can get noisy, dirty, & crazy even without water & mud. Those high school kids do good car cleanings down town too. There is often someone washing undercarriages at Lands End as well. I feel and for everyone that put money & time to travel there and got shut down. We are getting thunder storms here every afternoon once we got enough moisture to set up the cycle.
-
Kinda wonder. If they cancel an event, could you use the pre-entry for World of Speed ?
That's alot of money down the toilet if not.
-
I think it's a different group. I'm sure they do refunds.
-
My guess is. if its cancelled they will hold your money for next year. it will cost them too much to return everyone's fee
-
Here's the camera U of U put out on the saltflats.
You can do 24hr time-lapse takes. It's interesting to watch the water blow around during wind gusts.
It was almost getting dried out but another storm happened.
https://home.chpc.utah.edu/~u0553130/Camera_Display/bflat.html
-
Even though the camera shows the area around it somewhat dry, it's a very different story at lands end.
The news from landracing.com.
----------//////////‐--------------------------------------------------- Dennis and I did venture out the the salt today. The situation is grim. There is still standing water as far as you can see. We walked out to the starting line and found the water to be 3 inches deep. At the end of the access road, it is about 6 inches deep.
After discussing the current status and trying to look into the future we have decided to cancel the World of Speed for this year. Even if the water were to disappear, there would not be enough time to groom and prep the courses. This water has done some strange things to the salt. It seems to lifted up the crust were it was very very thin and moved it around. The tire marks from vehicles are clearly visible as it appears to show only mud below. Dennis and I both feel it will need the coming winter months to heal properly.
It is with heavy hearts that we made this decision, we debated amongst ourselves the positives and negatives and just could not find enough positives to move forward with the event. We wish all competitors the best and appreciate the support you have given us in the past
