Title: Hinge screw tool
Post by: sammons on December 18, 2016, 03:26:52 PM
Ed wanted me to re-post this to the "Tricks" section.
Build a tool for removing stuck or stripped slot screws on your door hinges. Dad built one of these tools from old broken/wore tools to fit his Air Chissel.
Needed: old air chelissel bit, old screw driver (for handel), and a 1/4" extension, a good quality 1/4" short socket and flat blade bit(or whatever type needed)  This works on a bigger scale for bolts in a blind tapped hole.
My hinge bolts were stuck/stripped and somebody attemted to drill them out. So I got dads old tool out and broke it, so I made another one. I find it works better to hammer on the screw head for a min or two before working the handel back and forth (left then right). Hammering dry at first seems to turn the rust to dust quicker. Most hinge bolts are soft, so you can hammer the slot back in them before you start turning handel. Once the screw is moving out and in a bit you then spray with penatrating oil. Once out spray and chase the threads.

As you can see, I thought I would end up drilling and tapping all of them. But they ALL came right out! ;D

I see Wal-mart now sells a 1/4" tool for $50  ::)
