Title: C4 vette no start issue
Post by: Rattiac on September 07, 2021, 10:14:40 PM
My dad recently aquired a 87 vette in a trade (another story) and it ran fine when he got it.
It sat for a few weeks and when he tried to start it. Nothing , not even the dead battery click.
Battery is good,  lights, ect turn on.
Starter good,  tested.
VTT has been ruled out.
He got fed up and had it towed to a dealership
(not my call, IH8t dealerships).
But its been sitting there for 9 weeks cause only one tech knows how to work on this older stuff.
Im betting its something easy like the ignition key or neutral saftey switch.
What do yall think???

I swear when I first joined here,  there was something posted about this.

I agree that it's the neutral safety switch or ignition switch.  First step jump the small wire on the starter solenoid against the battery feed post. If it starts...you have a wiring problem.

Believe the neutral safety switch is located inside the console next to the shifter and is purple.  Maybe a few shakes back and forth of the shifter with key on might get the switch to align temporarily.

Would look for a toggle switch near the console or under the dash...a lot of vette owners installed toggle switches as a theft deterrent.

If it was VATS..the car would still turn over....but wouldn't start.  FYI I can burn chips without VATS if required.

BTW: If it's a VATS problem...just delete the VATS from the ECM..  I have a couple of these adapters and can program a chip on it with VATS deleted.  Then you just attach your ecm's MEMCAL to the adapter, plug in the adapter to your ecm.  This will bypass VATS completely,,, then you can even buy generic ignition keys without the embedded chips.

I just need the four letter code from the MEMCAL in the computer..then I'll burn a chip without VATS, attach it to the adapter and send it to you.
