Rear axle placement on 37-39 Chevy sedan
« on: February 12, 2015, 01:22:41 PM »
When lowering the big fender-ed sedans with leaf spring rear suspension how much did you move the axle centerline forward to fit the fender cosmetically? I remember someone mentioning moving theirs forward about an inch? (IE with standard 24" front half leaf spring distance).

Need to order leaf spring perches and they come with either 1 or 3 holes on the bottom. Thinking it might be best to buy the one hole and if needed just drill my own hole during mock up?

These are measurements on the 1937-1939 chevy spring kit I sold , I believe that this kit centered the wheel/tire in the center of wheel opening, posting for your information  disregard if this info is not helpful.....

Thanks for the help

Looking at the attached picture...I'm under the impression that when lowering the sedans from the stock height..the tires will move reward in the fender opening. To correct this visual effect, I was told some guys move the axle forward, decreasing Distance A. The factory distance of A and B is 24" each, after moving the axle forward Distance A might be 23" and Distance B increased to 25"?

When I lowered my 39 in the rear I  made lowering blocks and drilled a hole in the lowering block to sit on the spring locator pin to axle , then  drilled another hole approx. 1'' forward  and made another  locator pin to receive the axle,,,,,This set up was not a store bought kit  I used the old Datsun(Nissan) springs and all mounting hardware from that pickup when I built that 39

Thanks...sounds like the "one inch" number is used often...but wouldn't the secondary hole be made rearward of the center hole...to push the axle forward?
