Title: Tech Tip I never that about before
Post by: EDNY on December 12, 2014, 06:45:09 PM
Recently read a tech tip where the writer suggested installing your SBC or BBC distributor (not bolted down) prior to torqing down the intake manifold bolts. Supposedly the distributor benefits with better alignment.  I have a stripped down distributor that I use for oil priming...may just drop it in during future intake installations...only because it can't hurt ::)

I can't see where it would hurt but I can't see where the distributor would benefit from it either because of the loose fit,  unless it has something to do with the meshing of the cam gear. ???

Ed believe it or not, I have ran into that problem with newer aftermarket aluminium intakes. The distributor housing was catching on one side of the distributor hole.  I think it's because of the larger bolt holes, allows the intake to move off to one side slightly.

I had seen what happens when the two oil journals diameters on the bottom of the distributor shaft are undersized...(loss of oil pressure). The oil in the galley blows by the distributor journals and engine oil pressure drops from 40 psi down to as low as 5-6 psi.

Common problem with those nylon cast (GM1) distributors (AKA Chinese)... or when someone decided to polish the journals to the point that they became undersized.

For the piece of mind...may just drop my priming dizzy in to align the intakes in the future.
