Chevy oil adapter gasket?
« on: October 17, 2014, 11:04:42 AM »
Putting a 95 5.7 together and want to use the non layered oil filter adapter as seen in the picture.

I found the torque specs as 84 inch pounds but can't determine if it is installed with or with a gasket. I'm sure it doesn't use a gasket...but need to be sure.

Ed,
The one on my 350 crate motor used a gasket.  The adapter was P/N 12556204 and the gasket was P/N 88893990.

Have a feeling your adapter mounts like the one on the left...they use a gasket and and O ring.  I want to use the one on the right so the oil filter seals directly to the block. Have seen those O rings fail before.

Ed,
Sorry I gave you the wrong part number.  I used P/N 19299222.  It came with a gasket and mounted directly to the block.

Check out this ebay link and look at the gaskets in both pictures :-\

Simple task becoming a concern...but then again...oil pressure is good!

I believe mine was like the one on the left but old age must be setting in because I can't remember for sure.  Now the oil filter is in the way to check it out  :D

Just comparing the pictures only..the gasket on the left would not properly seal the pressure relief valve...

I have seen them both with and without a gasket. I have never used a gasket on the engines that I've built including the current one that's in my 32 and when I worked with GM my engine guys never used them   .Even if there were some leakage which would be minimal to none because there is no pressure differential between the unfiltered side to the filtered side so it would to too slight to be any issue at all. If you were going to eliminate the bypass  then it might make sense to add a gasket but even then I don't think too much oil would be able to pass between the two machined mating surfaces and certainly not enough to affect volume or pressure.

Thanks Moose...over the years I have removed several and threw them in my parts bin...but now that I need to install one...doubt sets in. In any event..I am confident the gasket is not needed.
