Title: Atmospheric River, Bomb Cyclone
Post by: sammons on January 16, 2023, 08:33:07 PM
Pinapple Express, or what ever the catch phrase is at the moment. Anything to call for doom and gloom on climate change, (I still say snow storm, rain storm).

Was gonna ask Sixball and Rattiac if they were getting rain/snow out of these storms. I think its keeping us here warm, not much moisture getting to w Kansas. 69° yesterday but windy, today was 61, sunny and calm👍

Brother lives about 30 miles inland from San Louis Obispo, he finally got rain and adding up fast. Last monday storm he got a lot. Couldn't get to town on tuesday from ranch, all four ways out were a now go. River over one, the other 3 were washed out at creeks. Wednesday afternoon he took his Toyota FJ40 out and managed to get to town when the water dropped, (but road was still "closed")

We are getting hammered with alternating rain & snow. The ground has absorbed all it can and is in a near liquid state. It is soggy/muddy under the snow. We got another 7-8" of snow yesterday and the sun is shining today so much if it will melt on the south facing mountains. It will all run toward the Carson River. Local flooding similar to your pictures. I'm trying to keep up the best I can to get the water to cross the road instead of down the road. There are two miles of it and it is all up to me. Between clearing snow when needed and digging water diversions it is a job. We are in no danger unless the mountain behind us decides to move to the valley. Last night the wind blew and there are some 2' + drifts. I can't lift my old legs that high.
Mixed blessings: More snow means less running water but we have to depend on the generator for power. Sunshine makes the solar system work after I clear the snow from the panels but it melts the snow and the flooding starts. Biggest worry is getting the Propane truck in here maybe next month. Otherwise I'll be hailing 25 gallon tanks that I can no longer lift, thank God for Kubota! Then there's the water in the basement.  ;D

All this said so far this is far from the toughest winter we've had. This is what the winters were like when we moved here. But to answer you question what ever the woke term of the day is we are getting lots of moisture and all that goes with it. The snow pack above Tahoe in more that 200% for this time of year but that doesn't mean it will end the season with that.

Same here.  We have had a few storms that have been better than the last 5 years. It snowed for 3 days here which is unusual but could be better.
Still not like the 1980's

As a matter of fact. Like the crazy guy I am. Last Friday the 13th I went camping south of the pony express road and knew a storm was coming but didn't think it would be much.
It was a mini blizzard all night.  When I woke up I didn't think it was more than a few inches but when I started walking around I noticed all the snowdrifts.
Once I got up to the main dirt road I knew I was in trouble 😳. Got home safely and the city was dry.
Editing the video right now  .

Had a post already, arm got a cramp...thumb twitched...everthing disapeared😡

Sixball i guess more good than bad, get a start on fire season. "Thank God for Kabota", lol. Thats what my brother said. His roads at the ranch are all screwed up, got 1' trenches across many. He said he filled up with propane before xmas, so he's good till next Nov anyway. His solar power wall batt bank got a glitch, so he is on PG&E usage till Tesla gets it fixed.

Rattiac, hats off to you and your adventures. My days of cold weather camping are long gone🥶 They, the weathermen, have been promising us rain/snow thru all this....nothing. snow up north and rain east. We were at 65% chance overnight rain/snow, nope. 30% today, this morning took dog out at 7am, 41 and clear🥴 Looking forward to video.

I got my natural gas bill yesterday for Dec, we did have that nasty wind and sub 0 temps. But...$90 bucks more than Novembers🤯 It was more than i'be ever paid in winter before @$150. Was down to the shop crying to Tom about a $241 gas bill, he said he hadn't seen his yet. Text me lastnight when he got home....his was $600. I guess i've got no room to complain, I felt like an idiot then. Sure glad i went 2x6 construction with lots of insulation!

I wish I had video of the two guys on quads I ran out of here last week. Playin in the snow tearing the Hell out of my road 1 1/2 miles past the NO TRESPASSING signs they of course didn't see.  ::)  Then they called me names & threatened me. Good for them they didn't make a move to carry out their threats. Good for me too in the long run.

It took the sheriff over 1/2 hour to call me back to say they couldn't find us. It was over by then.  >:(

Reason one for carrying. When seconds count....Leo maybe a long time coming.

We are suppose to get another deep freeze saturday night thru tuesday🥴  Not looking forward to that.

It was very tense and they definitely crossed the line more than once. The don't know how close they came. I was able to keep some distance and give them time calm down. It ended well.

We may get a little more snow Saturday but not much. Supposed to get up to 40 tomorrow.

Got up to 48 by 2:30, fronts a coming in. Fell to 43 by 3pm and wind changed from south to nw. I'm trying to get everthing done as far as trips outside. Took a break for lunch sat down on couch and heard the dog digging around in the kitchen.

My buddy Tom brought me a new 5gal pail i put under the coffe maker for collecting used coffee/tea grounds for his lady's worm bed. I haven't dumped it in a while, had just shy of 3gals worth. Well dog was dragging it out of the bucket. Hollered at him, he had grounds all over the place. He never gets in the trash, let alone the grounds bucket. Picked up the mess, cussing dog. Went to dump in plastic bags, got about 10" down...... it was smoking like crazy🤯 I didn't know it would smolder up like green hay, freaky. I looked up coffee grounds  it said highly flammable when dry. Sure didn't know that either.

So, Rowdy is either smarter than i thought, (alerting me?) Or he's just a dick😁

Title: Re: Atmospheric River, Bomb Cyclone
Post by: Rattiac on January 29, 2023, 12:22:01 AM
Wonder if he saw it smoking too and attacked.

My dog just makes random messes.  Oh and learned how to turn the sink on. 😟
Title: Re: Atmospheric River, Bomb Cyclone
Post by: sixball on January 29, 2023, 10:32:43 AM
Just about anything that can burn can have spontaneous combustion with the right conditions. The right amount of moisture being one. I wouldn't have thought of coffee grounds. I read a post on another site about linseed oil and guys who won't allow in their shops. Think of the old grain elevator explosions.

Rowdy is a keeper! He could probably teach Smoky a lesson or two.

Was 6° this morn at 7am, and 20mph wind🥶 Suppose to get to 15 this afternoon. Two more days of this cold crap.

I had a cat decades ago that use to turn the sink on to get colder water. Never could get him to shut it back off.

Yep, top of the pail was pretty dry, lower i got the wetter it was. Guess i best dump it every week. Grandpa taught me young about linseed oil. Once a year he would scrub out the horse trailer real good and reapply linseed oil to the wood floor. Then he would have me gather up the rags and brushes and lay them out in the drive till they dried out a couple days before putting in the outside trash barrel. High school wood shop class we did the same. Dad was a stickler about speading out the rags as soon as we used them after treating new p.u. bed boards at the shop. Out back till they dried and then to dumpster in the alley.

Guess i have a new Fire Marshall😁

Sixball, i just watched several youtube shows on Lovelace cave, red headed giants.  I remember something in one of my history classes in high school. I was thinking it was around Las Vegas. Hell it's up north not too far from you. Interesting anyway.

Brother is busy trying to rebuild his washed out roads since the rain has stopped. Go Kabota😁

Post by: sixball on January 31, 2023, 10:46:30 PM
The stories of those red headed giants is very interesting. It is too bad that the skeletons have gone away.

I was able to keep most of the water from running down my road. I was out for a while today moving snow. It didn't get above freezing again so it is melting slowly only where the sun hits it.

Title: Re: Atmospheric River, Bomb Cyclone

I spent the day on my Kubota moving ice & snow and making mud. I didn't get stuck but it doesn't do well on icy hills.  :o

That is when down pressure on the three point/ box scraper would be nice. Use it & the bucket to pick up the whole tractor and start throwing stuff under it. I had my Ford stuck like that in mud behind the house for months once until it dried up enough to pull it out. I got one truck stuck and another nearly stuck trying to get it out. Now I have a winch but the Ford has now been teetering over the edge of a road on a hillside for a few years now. Maybe I'll winch it out this spring.  :)

Years ago I was digging a pond at one of our springs with a small JD crawler. The water was running in and my exit ramp was too steep. I spun the tracks and the tractor sank to the frame. When the water got high enough to hit the fan water was thrown on the ignition and I was dead in the water. A friend came up with his backhoe and pulled me out. I wish that little crawler still worked. I could sure use it now.

That is when down pressure on the three point/ box scraper would be nice.

That was my problem with my old '46 farm jeep. Didn't want to screw up the old Monroe 3 point, on the rear, so i just put a double act cylinder on the front blade. Sure made a difference in being able to move a lot of dirt.

Lol Ed that is the very video i sent my brother. He already recovered all by that time, but said he would keep that in mind for the next time.

Im probably going to head out camping again.  This time along the Pony express road,  Simpson Springs campground.  It looks like it's been improved since I was out there last in the 32. That was 2015.
Should be a dry day,  not expecting any storms till late Sunday.
Campground overlooks a corner of Dugway proving grounds.  They call it area 52.
Also wild horses are out there.  Always wanted to photograph wild horses.  Should be fun,  talk to yall Sunday night.

Have a fun trip and bring us some video!

I see all the feral horses I need from the porch. They are to the west what pythons are to the Everglades except that are totally protected at great cost to the environment & tax payers. I don't know if this link will work or not. It is on Facebook.

Thanks.  Got back around noon.  It was super muddy heading out there but left while it was still frozen. The horses were way off the dirt road,  needed binoculars to see em.  Here's a pic at 6:30am.
Was watching the fog roll back and forth across the desert was cool.  Kinda like ocean waves.

Pretty, but looks damn cold🥶  Sure glad i was sitting in the sun in the garage drinking coffee to watch😁

I finally got around to installing a new flame sensor and wall thermostat the other day when it warmed up a bit.  I had cleaned the old flame sensor sometime back even though it worked. Had a cold snap with wind night before, heard the furnace short cycling again. I use an anolog thermostat, and suspected the antisapator on burn time. Also unit wouldn't always come back on if you changed temp. Boy that made a differance. Everthing is working better than it has in last couple years.

Our two 250 gallon propane tanks are empty. I'm hauling 25 gallon thanks more than 150 pounds each when full, old heavy tanks. I only got 4 days out if the first one. I've lowered the down stairs thermostat and been tweaking the upstairs one. Tomorrow is the 4th day for this tank. The snow is still melting slowly and the mud not drying up at all. With good weather it will be weeks before a truck can get up here. At least it is not as cold as the last couple of months, no new snow, and the sun shines most days so we have electricity. We didn't get near as cold as some of you did.
Title: Re: Atmospheric River, Bomb Cyclone
Post by: sammons on February 13, 2023, 08:50:36 PM
Thats the drawback of propane. The ability to get delivered, usually at the most inconvenient time. I don't know how you move those tanks. I brought my BBQ grill in so if the power went out i could use the side burner for coffee or skillet. I went to unhook my 5 gallon one off it to refill to make sure i had enough. I couldn't lift it out of there😡  Didn't think i had gotten that weak. Just another thing my buddy Tom will have to do for me.

Post by: sixball on February 13, 2023, 10:19:19 PM
Sitting here now by the fire on the 6th day on this bottle. The thermostat tweaking is paying off. If I'd done this in September the big tanks would probably not be empty. As far as handling them, I can lift the empties. The guy that fills them helps load them in my pickup and when I get them home the Kubota makes to possible to get them where they need to be. No one said it would be easy but I may have to get bigger tanks this summer.

Weather man has been predicting this snow storm since monday for over night wed. Tues day was up to 1 to 3" here, yesterday it was updated to 3 to 6" possibly more come thursday morn. They were calling off schools ahead of the snow. Only giving windchills for temps😡  Took dog out early this morn, only white was in the sidwalk seams. Weather this morning still in wind chill "feels like" temps, and they say clouldy, mostly cloudy all day. Suns been shinning since daybreak.

Got a kick out of the radio dj. Well the weather man is seeing something i'm not. Looking out the window here, i see a light dusting of snow and sunshine. However...to his credit, it is 20° and the wind is blowing.😁

This morning it was 40 degrees. The first morning above freezing for months. I saw the first ground squirrel of the season. I was doing road work like yesterday and got tired of chasing my cap by 1:30 I was blown off the job. It is 5:00 PM now 25 degrees 2 1/2"- 3" of snow on the ground. The wind is blowing and visibility is about 20 yards. It's coming!

You guys must be getting whats headed my way. Been a weekly yo-yo ride, warm then cold. Been warm, upper 60s and 72 today. But dang wind kicked up hard by late morn, then thin clouds and dust. 46 for overnight low, then the big dive tomorrow night. High 30, low 8 for thursday🤯 Still no moisture here, snow and rain have been missing us.

I measured 4" before I went to bed last night. It was snowing then. Two wind blew all night so can't get a measurement this morning but not much more fell. By Saturday we may get 8 more inches highs in the 20s lows in the teens.

Sixball i haven't heard that song in nearly 50 years, forgot all about it.

Challenge accepted, lol 😁 We had a big blizzard in '76, big big drifts, like some 8' tall. School called off so i went to work at Mobil instead. Our manager had a '73 chevy 4x4 and it was buried deep in a drift, he was a no show. I had a 68 Galaxey 500, snow tires and chained up. Told my buddy i worked with that i would go get him. Had to make several stabs at the drifts to get through, the last being huge but not too long. I left a tunnel going thru it. Got in his drive knocked on his door, the look on his face, lol  Damn, how did you get here? I wanted the day off😁

Add: I caught the CBS evening news cause i missed local weather. More fear mongering... 60 million people brace for a coast to coast winter storm. Unprecedented snow in Minnesota, a foot on the ground and more coming. Then a gal on the street, " It's Minnesota, thats what happens"🙄

The sad news first. my good friend went missing a week ago today. She was found  dead yesterday in a remote area just south of here in her Jeep Wrangler. She was in no way prepared to be out there in this kind of weather. We don't know why she was out there, most likely reaction to medications from the VA. It's a long story and I don't know it all yet, may never know. I have to help My friend who she lived with to sort things out. It is a mess.

In the next storm Tahoe may get 7' of snow and we could get up to 15" here. That will put us to neat 2' on the ground. Play the John Denver song again! Sometimes here we get 90% of our snowpack for the year in March!  :o

Sorry to hear about your friend Sixball. In that kind of weather  anything can happen.
Reminds me of on old friend of mine, he was in his low 80s at the time. Went out one afternoon for a drive, he had various different farm grounds. He didn't come home for dinner, wife started calling around and the locals went hunting for him. It was winter, but no snow/rain. They found him the next day, he was up north 15 miles in the sandhills by the river. He was born up there, been around there all his life. He went a sandhill too far and lost his sense of direction, had no idea which way was out. They said his tracks went all over the place. He was out of gas, cold, dehydrated and a bit confused but ok.

You out west are atleast getting some much needed moisture.

Brother got couple inches snow last thursday, rained hard friday, then 6"-9" snow friday night. He took his FJ40 out for a spin in it sat morning. Said he didn't mind it much as it would be gone in a day or two. In the mean time we were warm, had a storm come thru last night. High wind rain and a few first of the year twisties. Of course right here  we only got an hour of very light rain, didn't get any run off in the creek🥴

Man,  sorry to hear about your friend.
We hear that stuff here from time to time.  Terrible news. Last time a lady took a shortcut home north of the Great Salt Lake and was missing for a week.
I wanted to help with the search but they found her alive just stuck. She had food, water and made a fire till the wood was gone.
Wasn't far from the highway.  A small hill blocked the view from seeing her. She stayed with the vehicle and had a full tank.
Do you and your neighbors have radios you can do a roll call every few days in weather like this  ?
How's the winch coming along in your Yukon.

The winch setup os on my Silverado. It is all done but I don't like it. It goes into receivers front or back but it is too heavy for me to carry around by myself. I have a rope line for it and that should lighten it up some. It sticks out too far to leave to on all the time plus it would be easy to steal and probably eventually break the mount. It will be a help around the place and I'll pack it along on big outings but I'm rethinking. The good thing is now a new bumper mount is it's own project and will seem to cost less.

Deon was out of gas. She had no warm clothes or blankets. Not even a charger for her phone. They haven't named a cause of death yet but I'm sure the cold was it. Very sad. She was miles from where she should have been. We didn't join the search. The had 2 Jeep posses drones and a helicopter. We would only have been in their way. I looked in some spots nearer here just incase she made it back closer to home. There is always someone missing around here. So many city types who don't respect how many ways there are to die 100 yards from your house. Deon was one of those. I worried when she bought the Jeep.

Thanks guys it is sad and could have been avoided in many ways.  She had lost her wallet with credit cards, driver's license, & VA card. It was found Sunday but the finder did not contact her. They knew her and knew how to contact her but did not.  She went to town Monday to try and replace things forgetting it was Presidents' Day. Somehow she took her nighttime meds around noon before she left home. That could have been the key as they were partly to help her sleep. Anyone want to buy an '89 Wrangler?

Got about a foot of new snow. Quite a bit of wind so added to the old stuff there are some 2'+ drifts. Over knee deep going to the chicken house. The dogs ran into a skunk so they have lost their indoor privileges for a few days. They have the shop. Hooked up the last propane bottle (25 gal.) this morning. The sun is shining now about 25 degrees and a little wind. Tomorrow I'll try to move some snow with the tractor and make a fuel run Friday. I have a snow blower for the tractor but it didn't work well the last time I tried it. Should have worked on it this summer. I guess that makes me the grasshopper and not the ant.  ;D It sure is pretty out there. ( play the John Denver song)  :)

Again, my condolences for your friend.

Regarding weather, we have no snow this year except for a dusting back in the beginning of January, I believe. Today it is going up to the low 60's. I am going to do some bodywork on my son's Camaro. All in all, it has been a great winter.

For once I did what I said I'd do. I got on the tractor at 10:00 AM and got off at 3:00 PM. I moved a lot of snow and got the worst places cleared enough to be easily passable. I found that in some places I could drag with the bucket and push with the box scraper at the same time. I'll do more today and then make a fuel run. gas for the backup generator, diesel for the tractor, & propane for the house and shop. The sun is beautiful!  Life is good!  :) New set of storms starting tomorrow.  :(   ;D

I guess I didn't do is well. My wife slid off the road in one of the spots I didn't clear.  I thought it was OK. I pulled a muscle in my leg lifting the winch to mount it in the pickup. I couldn't get her out with the tractor so had to go back to try and lift the winch again. I was more careful and was able to do it. Got her out but wasn't able to make the fuel run. This is really wet snow and compacts onto ice. Her Jeep has very aggressive tires but once you spin them you are done. I'll try to beat the storm tomorrow.

That is a really cool van. That guy did OK but he is flirting with being a statistic.

Sixball, sounds like a mess. I just watched a movie the other day about the January 1949 Nevada "Opperation Haylift". Maybe you could get an "Opperation Propanelift" going.  That could end up being a big fireball show😁

Great weather here lately, today 76° sunny and a mild SW breeze. They say by thursday 60% chance rain/snow. So far..... NOTHING they have predicted here.

Spent yesterday afternoon at the hospital seeing my good buddy Cheech, (Game Creek Video driver). He just got home from the road a couple days and his little toe hurt. Couldn't see anything, cut/scratch/bite. (Just red). Last sunday at church his wife kept having to wake him up. After church he wasn't feeling good, took a nap and woke up sweating and his whole leg was swelling and hot. So they went to the ER, they admitted him right then. They put him on iv antibiotic drip etc. Monday morn he had 3 huge blisters on his leg, 4" long and stuck out over an inch🤯 Scary stuff, they still don't know what infection is causing it or how. The blisters had all drained by yesterday and some of the swelling is down. His leg was still beet red yesterday. I told him he must indeed be more Indian than Mexican with red skin like that😁

Sixball, sorry for the loss of your friend.  May she rest in peace.

Thanks Tom. I sat for a while with the friend she lived with and studied maps of the area where she was found including the hand drawn one she got from a guy who was trying to point her back to the main road. Her mind just wasn't right. A guy who spent 6 nights stuck in his car in the same county was found alive. His missing time overlapped Deon's. Happy for him.

Sammons that is scary. I hope they figure it out and fix him.

I went out yesterday and fueled up. The road was not easy on the way down. I took some time to visit with Leroy, look at maps and talk muzzle loaders. It was snowing when I headed home. The road was worse. 6-8" of new snow this morning and the propane was running out when we got up. It was snowing the hardest I've seen this winter. I headed out, before coffee, to clear the steps, unload the pickup, put on a new propane bottle, put a new small tank on the shop heater, feed the chickens & dogs, start the generator, come in an relight the pilots. By then it had stopped snowing. Been setting on my ass ever since. ;D

Lots of flooding around here. Every place here is having issues with snow, water, or both. The flooding will be a problem for a while. The Sierra snow pack is twice the average. Buildings at Tahoe are collapsing from the snow load. I don't even want to think about our little house up there. It is old and has seen worse than this. The high desert doesn't deal with this much moisture well. We are better off than than many. Our road was a river the days ago. I was able to divert most of it with s few hours of tractor work. No new moisture today but another storm starting tonight. It will take me weeks to repair the road but it is passable in a good 4x4. My wife was happy to be able to go to church today!

Left for Moab today.  Slight rain in the city but Hwy 6 up at Soldiers summit was blizzard conditions.  Actually had to pull off an exit to clean the snow off the grill.  The truck in front of us slid off the road,  when his trailer got near the shoulder.
Got to town around noon. Then rain later in the afternoon.

Sixball you out west keep getting wave after wave. My brothers still getting rain, he said the coast was getting more.
Sure hope your little house is ok. They have been predicting rain/snow every thursday here for the last month and this coming thursday here. Nothing yet🤨

My buddy is still in the hospital. They think they have the infection knocked down some, but still there. This could go nasty, sure hope he gets thru this ok. The thought of loss of leg or worse is always a possibility🥴

Sammons, I hope your friend makes a full recovery. Did they figure out what kind of infection it is or what caused it?

We have had 3 days with very little moisture. Supposed to get another storm for the next two days then sun on Thursday then another round of snow & rain for the weekend. It is getting tiresome.

As of last friday, what i understood was waiting for new lab reports and still no "what caused it" yet. I talked to my stepdad sunday, he said that he went thru similar deal last fall, (hadn't told me before). His leg hurt, then thought it was his knee. Then leg swelled and went to ER, got his feet up and treated incase of blood clot. They ran tests on infection to no avail. Ended up being a side effect of new heart medicine he was on🙄

That kind of thing is scary. Who knows what kinds of infections are coming here from other places? Who knows if it is something new? As far as the effects of new or changes in medications we are pretty sure it was changes in her meds that hid our friend so disoriented that she got lost in a simple trip to town and ended in her death alone in the freezing mountains.

On a lighter note I got the tractor bogged to the axles yesterday trying to divert water that is running through my shop. The ground behind the shop and into the pasture is saturated with snow still melting. Had to use the winch again to get it out. That is two rescues in two weeks. Looks like the Harbor Freight $350 12,000 lb BADLAND winch was a good investment.

Back from Moab.  We did alot.
Ran chicken corners trail when we got there. Couldn't finish it,  was getting dark and rained. They shut the trail down for a few minutes to film a commercial.  Had a truck all covered up and the film crews were driving new grand wagoneer's.
Day 2 ::; we ran "fins and things" then Hells Revenge.
My dad did well.  I think some parts scared him.
Day 3 :::; We did take it down a notch for more scenic stuff.  Tusher tunnel and into the backside of Arches NP.  Eye of the whale and Tower arches.

Hwy 6 was shut down to crashes so I-70 going home adds 2 hrs.
Great trip.  I don't think I'll take my aunt ever again.  She turns into a different person after 4 o'clock.

Rattiac, glad you and your dad had a good time. Only problem traveling in winter weather...  the other idiots on the road.

They missed again on the rain/snow last thursday. We got a light dusting of white on the grass, gone in 30 mins🥴 Last weekend was the first time our local weatherman mentioned the term "Atmosphiric River" (new guy🙄). The regular weatherman said yesterday we are done with winter. That means hang on we'll probably get a big snow😁

Well my buddy made it out of the hospital last week. The insurance company was throwing a fit. He's doing the daily wound care out patient deal to treat the blister areas. Haven't talked to him to find out if they know what caused it ie exactly what infection he had.
