Title: How about a "Wishing Well" category?
Post by: EDNY on January 08, 2017, 06:40:24 PM
"Wishing Well" category?

We aren't getting posts in the Picture and Posting Practice area...so instead of deleting it I was thinking of a category we all could use related to both vehicle and non vehicle personal interest items. For example if you always wanted a certain custom knife, tool, magazine, home repair part, a cast iron leg for your antique claw foot bathtub :o,  fishing or hunting items, (anything) etc etc What the heck throw a stone in the dark...maybe someone out there might have it!

We do get a lot of visits (see flag log below)...U.S. then Canada.  Might even get some conversations going?

Looking at the flags below I'm surprised China has some interest in old Chevys.  I thought they were into Buicks (no offense intended Ghost ;D)

Talking with you guys is great! Thanks for the help.  ::) The basement is almost dry and I'm only missing about 50 yards road  with a few other smaller washouts but it's still doable in a 4X4. Now my tractor is stuck in the mud behind the house and another storm is on the way. Glad I live closer to the top of the mountains than the bottom. If I had gotten the tractor stuck in the road it might wash out. ;D

Here in SC it actually got down to the 20s this past weekend.  I know some of you are used to those temps, but in the words of my Granddaddy "It was so cold I had to build a fire under the milk cow to keep he from giving ice cream".

Now they are calling for 74 by Thursday, go figure...

Ed,
Not a bad idea for the "Wishing Well" category.  We should give it a try.

Ed, I hope your feeling better soon!
Sixball, hope ya get dried out. Seems its either too dry or too wet. At least you probably have a well stocked pantry just in case this time of year ;)

I wish I could find my youth, but if some one located it...  I couldn't afford to buy it back anyway. :D

Thanks guys! :) My one old man with a shovel approach didn't free the tractor. If possible tomorrow we will try two old men with with two shovels, two come-a-longs, and lots of chain. :o  If its not out by tomorrow nigh it will likely be frozen in the mud till spring.  >:( It's snowing again now but will be raining tonight. This has been crazy! We got much needed rain and snow that soaked in and covered the ground. Then some cold that froze the ground. Then snow and rain that melted the snow and nowhere for it to go because it ground is frozen. Tom, At one time Monday all four paved roads to Virginia City were closed and all the dirt roads were rivers. Every cloud has a silver lining. My wife is now all in favor of loosening the purse strings enough to get our old dozer, bobcat, and Blazer back up. Maybe even a new pair of snow packs and a new wet/dry shop vac. ;D

Through all of this I have a new best friend. His name is Douglas Fir. He is a Christmas decoration that has a motion sensor that I thought was stupid when my wife bought him. Thankfully we are late in getting all that put away. Douglas is on the porch by the back door and greets me every time I walk by with a happy seasonal message. It has actually made me laugh when I was so tired I could hardly make it up the steps. There really is something to a positive attitude and Douglas has cheered me. I may just leave him there all year. My wife and the dogs a dubious. Unlike my other friends I can unplug him ;)

Sammons, No food issues we have Chickens and wild horses.  :o Too wet or too dry kind of a Goldy Locks thing. Nevada has two seasons Winter and Road Construction. ;D Thank for the good wishes guys!

Ok, I wish those guys were doing my road. ;D I saw a video of  road machine in Africa I think that went over pretty much untouched land scooping up dirt and rocks crushing it all and lawing a gravel road behind. Can you imagine the power and noise?

Basement has been dry for two days, tractor still stuck, 6" new very wet snow last night and another storm on the way. I can not even think about our cabin at Tahoe. Lots of snow up there. When I got up this morning at 7:00 I heard a noise outside. It was my buddy shoveling the snow off the back steps. Dark and snowing and there he was. He lives 10 miles away. You can't beat that kind of friendship. 8) It will all be fine. :)

Is your tractor 4X4 or have a bucket to pull or push with?  If the rear is buried...can you get a floor jack on the draw bar before the mud sets or freezes?

It's a 1960 Ford 800.No bucket and no 4X4. I had a single bottom plow on it that I ditch with. I got that off but it is still in the way. There is about a foot of very wet snow around it now and the ground is too boggy for jacks. At least the snow will insulate the mud for a while and keep it from freezing solid, I hope. I have a couple of ideas when the weather clears a bit and I know it will some day. ::) If I can get a good sized beam under it and chain it to both rear wheels it may be able to lift itself out or at least enough to get something under the wheels. If I get the plow out of the way I may be able to deadman to a tree and pull it out with come-a-longs. There are holes in the front axle where I could mount a winch. :) I can't get another vehicle close enough with all the mud and snow. Right now I'm more worried about the road and being able to get in and out. We are dry and safe but I only have 3 more beers. :o The last several easy winters have made me lazy and careless. Too much hot rod dreaming and not enough equipment maintenance. :-[

Sixball, love those old Ford tractors, very handy. Hate to hear the oversite on beer count ;D  My buddy Tom has a 1939 9n that he got from his dad. Those little tractors can move an amazing amount of dirt, and use very little fuel. We have used the crap out of it the last 35+ years after engine rebuild in 1980 ;)

My brother said he is losing trees from the ground soak (central w.coast). Weather man says we are going to get 3-4days of freezing rain starting friday night. :(  trying to get all ready for the power outage to come.
Good luck on the tractor retrieval!

I grew up on old tractors many of them Fords. I've owned a couple of 9Ns. We had two 8Ns when I was a kid. The last one had a Funk conversion with a Ford flathead inline six. This one is a later version of the Jubilee series that replaced the N series. OHV 171 inch engine. It is a 5 speed with better hydraulics than the old ones. It's rear wheel weights are working against me now. The one that amazes me about the amount of work it will do is my John Deere 420 crawler. Unfortunately it will crawl now but not steer. It is the ticket in the snow. Two beers left but there is wine in the basement which is still dry by the way! ;D

Sixball,
Glad the basement is dry.  Hope you get that tractor out.  Anyone in Virginia City with a drone that could fly in some beers for you ;D?

There are guys up there that would saddle their horses and pack their mules with beer but I don't want that riff-raff hanging around. ::)

I can see a boat in your future, or u have one, and it's buried in ice and snow.
If it helps, we are having a real crappy Sumner down here.
Rain one day, sun the next. No long hot sunny weeks, it's damn annoying. :D

I wish I could get a car running.
Both are broken.

Tom, That would work!  8) We went out today. No problem it's almost all down hill for 4 miles. Comping home? A different deal. The wife's Jeep needs tires no one around had the right ones. They will be in tomorrow. Tried to get home, no dice. (no traction either)  :o Had to make one of those sliding backwards down hill J turn arounds on the one lane road. :) Went all the way to Carson City, about 30 miles before I could find two sets of cables. When I tried to Install them I found that an evil Chinaman had tied one pair in a knot. Finally got them on and barely made it home just before dark. Broke one cable. I got beer but I can tell it was not enough. ;D We're home and we're warm and dry. Tomorrow is another adventure. First I'm going to our Inliner meeting then getting tires and a replacement cable. Sunday I'll do it again and get tires for the Yukon. There is room for real chains on it and I already have them. My wife just said, "I wish the bulldozer was working." I think I'll have the $$$$ to work on it very soon now. It was smart taking her with me today. ::)

Sixball, I enjoy to reading about your adventures. I can relate to a lot of it ;)  Grandpa use to get grandma to get involved with a project if she wouldn't losen the purse strings. Then she would give in on her terms. ;D Good luck on the tire runs!

I'm hopeing the weatherman is as wrong as when they predict rain in july. We have went from a 1/4" ice watch to a 1" ice warning. :o  Trying to dig out all my camping gear. The nieghbor came over last night and said I could plug into his genset to keep my garage floor heat pump up and running. (I pretty much live in there anyway) He has a stationary standby on natural gas. :)
Talk about wishing...my buddy just sent me this old newspaper ad. Even Chevy guys wouldn't mind one of these hid out to take out their aggressions on at this price ;D

I went out this morning. Skipped the Inliner meeting but got Jeep tires and replacement tire cables. Got home without cables. Ordered tires for the Yukon to be installed Monday. The basement is dry my wife thinks I'm Superman. Don't tell her! ;D
