if you do a search of ...TECTONIC PLATES MAP, you will see that the INDO AUSTRALIA PLATE AND THE PACIFIC PLATE come together right up the center of new Zealand.
That's what causes all the trouble those 2 are smashing into each other way underground. one of them is pushing under the shelf of the other causing it to lift and an earth quake happens.
japan is in the middle of 4 tectonic plates, which is why it gets so many earth quakes, being battered on all sides.
there was a show once on PBS tv showing how this one land mass split into all the continents.
Name of the land mass was called PANGEA .. Google it, interesting reading about how earth evolved

Hey guys, sorry it's takin me all day to reply.
I had just jumped into bed around midnight, and about quarter past, I feel the bed start to sway.
Figured it would just be a little one, as we don't get em to big, on the West Coast of the South Island. It's opposite my town, on the East Coast, that's been hammered for last few years.
Anyways, it was real rolly, not much sharp jolting, so I head down the hall, to check the kid first. She's nearly seven, and I had to look several times, to make sure I was seeing what I was seeing. Her eyes were closed, the little angels bed was swaying pretty bad, and she slept right through it. Awesome!
Next her Mum, in her room, a city girl, drama queen, and she was also calm. She's been my flatmate for long enough, to know if I'm calm, it's all good.
I tell her, if this ain't the center, then someplace is going to be real messed up.
It went on for over thirty seconds, the biggest I've felt in my life, cept for the big 67 quake, which I slept through.
So it's over, and I do a recky of the house.
No damage, nothing fallen off shelves. Kinda hard to believe, cause I sure couldn't stand straight in it. So then it's off to check the shed.
I'm halfway through painting two Harley fenders, but they were ok, and nothing in the floor.
Well the next few hours were aftershocks every fifteen to twenty minutes, and they have continued into today. Quake was 7.5, while aftershocks were up in the fives.
My Dad was tough, and he raised me to handle these type of things, so not once, was I worried, but I Think I may have been, if it was a jolt type quake. My neighbors kids slept through it too.
Two died, one from a building collapsing, and one from a heart attack. Damn shame. Lots of damage up the East Coast, and some in Lower North Island.
Now it's raining, with storm warnings.
I don't think the Harley fenders will get top coated this week.

Just on twenty three hours since the quake, and the radio news just said there's been 500 aftershocks!

Jeff,
Glad to hear you're OK.

Same here..glad you are OK.

Thanks for the concern guys.
It's 1:27am, and I'm not sleeping, so poking about the interweb.
Geonet are saying we can expect another big one in the next three weeks.
Tom, I putting together a little Chrissy present for you, so best I get that out, before everything collapses.
Here's the Christchurch Cathedral, before, and after the big quake five years back.

Good to hear you fared well Jeff.

Glad you and the family are OK, Jeff.

Thanks guys, lots of thunder and crazy lightening last night, and I've been up for an hour, with things being pretty calm.
Only two aftershocks so far since I woke, but we are now over eight hundred.
The worst affected areas have heavy rain, which can't be good for people's spirits.
I'm happy enough, but a little annoyed that I won't be getting my buddies Harley fenders painted for him, by the weekend.
He wanted it for a bike run, honoring our dead miners.

Could have been worse:

Thanks, I been showing the kid pics on my phone, and we checked out the cows before.

Glad you are safe. :)

Thanks Sixball, we've just had another big aftershock. It was a five point something.

We get a lot of small one here. I think I read that Nevada is the most earthquake active. The last big one we had was Nov. 8 with the result that the state turned solid BLUE! >:(
