ford 302 , C6 3 speed
9"rear (3.00 gear installed)
the original donor(freebee) engine pooped the bed so i bought a reconditioned long block from checker.
this i basically a new engine with 1 oil change under it's belt.
i installed those bombproof motor mounts and the reversed corvair box yesterday.
this is my daily driver.
averaging 20 city 26 hwy mpg
front axle 64 f-100
12x2 juice brakes all around.
i'll be tinkering with this thing for the rest of my life

-
Billy,
That's a cool truck! Looks like it came a long way from when you first got it. Great fab work and I like the canteen overflow can! Thanks for posting.
Tom

Billy
That's your daily driver.....I'm jealous. Great job!
Moose
-
because of the shorter pitman arm.
it is a little harder to turn the wheel.
but with the previous setup
i had a bit of bumpsteer and if i locked the brakes up it would pull to the right.
yesterday i got it up to about 50 mph
let go of the wheel
and stomped the brakes
no pull and it stopped just fine.
those 12x2" juice brakes work just fine on a dinky lightweight rig like this.
-
yesterday i noticed my tranny hanging down more than it should.
turns out
when the motor mount broke.
it cracked my tranny mount as well.
i just walked in from fixing it.
ok
now i am done.*
*till next time. ;)
-
What did you use for the roof?
-
that used to be the roof of the full size cab on my willys jeep.
-
installing my groovy chrome headers today.
just waiting for it to warm up a bit.
-
Billy, post some pics when you get them installed.
-
UPDATE
this time SPEEDWAY sent me 2 passenger side headers.
i will NEVER give that company a DIME again as long as i live.
from now on i will use those pretty catalogs they keep sending me for ideas for parts.
and then rush out and buy from SOMEBODY ELSE!!!!!!!!!
-
Billy
You should tell Speedway that you want the correct header sent next day air at their expense to cover your aggravation and time to re-box and ship the incorrect back to them.
Moose
-
Oh Billy give em another chance. They usualluy do right by me if they screw up, it's too bad you didn't find out soon enough and that this falls on a holiday weekend. On another note what did ya do with that old chevy roof cap i gave ya awhile back? Saving it for your next build....John
-
i got plans for that cap.
i dont have a rock solid idea yet but.... ;)
-
yet another update.
after i stopped being so mad i was speaking in tongues.
i sent this email and also speedways response.
BTW that shipping is $53
hello MR Scranton.
is there a way you could cut me some kind of deal on these headers or something.?
these headers order mixups cost me a lot of time and that means they cost me money.
i am seriously considering never ordering anything from SPEEDWAY again.
i simply dont trust the company to send me what i pay for in a timely manner.
regards
William Hedges
William-
I provided my supervisors your words of disappointment regarding the matter regarding your headers. He refunded your shipping cost from original order for your trouble.
-
$53.00 is a pretty good adjustment. Did they send out the correct header yet?
-

I agree, sounds like they want to keep you as a customer. I've had good luck with them so far.
Tom
-
the other header should be here tomorrow.
i am not as mad as i was and will almost certainly gve them another chance.
but o lordy has this been infuriating.
but at least i will have it road ready for my car clubs ( the LOW FLYERS)car show on march 3rd
-
Yeah Old speedway has been around a long time with knowlegable staff, and the continue to give good service even with the few problems they have. I am glad you are getting the new headers in time for you car club romp. Have a blast.....John
-
update
the drivers side header should be here today.
after installing the one i realized that the doors wouldnt open with the extensions installed.
so i unbolted the body mounts and jacked the cab up 2 inches.
it didnt really change the look any.
luckily i have slack in my brake lines and wiring.
the steering column slid on the heim joint so that wasnt an issue either.
i dont want to jinx myself but
it looks like it just might work.
-
That's cool Billy. When ya get it all buttoned up take some more pictures of the truck for an updated look.
Thanks
-
You better watch out when you go into those parking garages, that extra 2 inches could turn it into a roadster pickup! Looking forward to the pictures.
Tom
-
yikes!
these muthas are LOUD!
putting the 20" extensions with mufflers tomorrow

I like the new look Billy. I can see where they would be loud though. Just turn up the radio :).
-
Right on the money Billy....Looks great.
-
Very nice. Big difference...
-
VERY COOL. I AM YELLING SO YOU CAN HEAR ME. WATCH OUT FOR THOSE HIGH CURBS...John
-
with the under the truck exhaust i hated the drone noise.
i installed those 26" headers with the built in mufflers this morning.
it is a bit louder but not bad.
best though.
that drone is gone and i am not getting gassed from that leaky exhaust

-
Looks great with the mufflers on it. Must have a nice rumble too! Nice work Billy.
-
is it my imagination or does this truck seem to have a little more pep with this exhaust?
-
I think it's those big side pipes giving you a little extra "Thrust"!
-
I call it ATTITUDE
-
yesterday at a stop light.
there was a college kid with one of those lil cars with the fart-pipes
he was revving it up and making that funny noise those things make.
when the light turned green i stomped on it for a second.
yeah rice burners are fun.
but they done make a noise like a v8..... 8)
-
Yeah Billy....and kids don't understand V8 torque either!
-
Hey Billy. Congrats to you and Tom for getting you rides pictured on top of the forum page.

update
i did the math.
with the c-6 trans and 3.00 gear in the rear as well as 27" tires
1st 2.46-1
2nd 1,46-1
3rd 1.00-1
2000 rpm 53.55 mph
2500 rpm 67.00 mph
3000 rpm 80.00 mph
-
Pretty cool , but math makes my head hurt. I hope you are having a blast cruizing....John
-
I think you forgot to add:
3000 rpm 80.00 mph and/or "Speeding Ticket" ;D
-
i need some 32" tires for the rear.
that keep the rpm's down
-
kingpin update
i got me some oversized pins and i am glad i did.
the previous pins and bushings were installed 3000 miles ago with the bushings upside down.
thus no lubrication.
the spindles and axle holes were wallered out in an egg shape.
i had to machine down the parts to make everything square and then use all the shims provided with the new pins just to do one side!
luckily we were able to scare up more shims and thus were able to finish the job.
right now my steering is VERY stiff.
so i am forced to go cruising around the neighborhood making lots and lots of turns breaking it all in before our vacation cruise.
boohoo poor lil ole me.
forced to drive my toy even more than usual.
-
Billy,
Keep it on all fours around those turns! Glad it'll be safe for the trip.
Tom
-
ya know?
the steering didnt seem sloppy to me at all.
it didnt wander on a crowned road or anything like that.
i didnt get speed wobble either.
but when i jacked the tires off the ground and got a 6 and 12 o-clock hold of it
there was an unacceptable amount of movement
maybe a half inch or a little more.
my spindles are worn as well but with the new pins installed i got the movement down to a 8th of an inch.
-
Billy
1/8 inch is pretty good. I'll bet the reason it was handling so well before despite the excessive play was because you have a lot of positive caster. I'm glad to hear the new pins worked out good for you!
Moose
-
i have been driving it almost every day and it is indeed getting easier to steer
but those 1st 50 miles?
oof!
-
we made a new bed for the weasel
anyway
wah lah!
(http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l272/billhedges/WP_20130721_0011_zpsbfef25ab.jpg) (http://s98.photobucket.com/user/billhedges/media/WP_20130721_0011_zpsbfef25ab.jpg.html)
i am going to put a piano hinge in the front and a latch at the rear so that it can only be opened after unlocking and opening the tailgate
inside the bed are 2 storage compartments and the gas tank.
-
Nice! I am glad to see ya still working on the hotrod. How is married life treating you?
-
i like bein hitched.
i waited till i was 50 before i got around to it.
and yeah
still foolin around with cars.... ;)
-
Nice job on the bed Billy. Glad to see married life is agreeing with you!
Tom
-
Billy
Your new bed looks great. Now you godda build something nice for the new bride!
Moose
-
we have a ton of things goin on right now
my gal said i needed a more powerful tow vehicle (bless her heart)
so i got a dodge 3500 5.9 turbo deisel dually
now i am getting a 25 foot 5th wheel she and i will live in for a while while we figure out what we are doing in the future.
i am getting ready to install the side and rear glass in the 27 and then paint it with a roller
done carefully the roller gives suprising results.
then i will finish the interior .
-
Cool truck. Ford in a Chevy! I like the Chevrolet tailgate.
I have had 8 small block fords and love the way they sound. But it takes more scrounging to get one put together. I still don't understand why they made so many parts that were almost the same.
