That's true I purchased the first coil from Mallory a 29219 the second was from Advance Auto was broke down on the side of the road luckily across the street from Advance, third I purchased at car show it came with the resistor. This whole time since the first one fail I thought it was a heat problem.

I wonder if it is time to try an OEM stock coil?  At least they are not expensive and are easily available. 

I think if I were you I would keep a second coil in the car just in case history repeats itself.

I've been carrying  an extra coil since the last time I broke down, I'm hoping this time I have the right combination per Mallory specs.

I installed my new #700 Mallory and 29217 coil tonight engine runs fines as always. Let it idle for awhile to come up to temperature and  I touched the coil and it's hot to the touch and the resistor is to as I suspected it would be. I took my meter and checked the voltage at the positive terminal on the coil it was 8.4 volts and the negative terminal was 4.8 volts. The coil has 1.4 ohms on the primary. Does this sound right?
