aluminum enclosed trailer anyone?
« on: May 06, 2014, 10:18:58 PM »
I ran this over on HAMB and it got deleted in about 15 minutes. The wife has decided she doesnt really want to do the motorhome thing anymore and started looking at trailers (camping). We have a 3 horse slant load trailer which,If I remove the stall dividers, the 28 would fit nicely, but of corse its a tagalog with no accomidations..The 28 is 12'-6",the trailer interior is 16'. Unfortuneatly we need 17' for the vette.Anyway, she has been looking at 26' tag alongs and the idea hit me, why not a 4 horse straight load with liveing quarters? So,I started shopping. What I found was that the Alumalight brand is just that, all aluminum. The only wood is in the LQ cabinets.Al tube frameing, skin, roof, and t&g al floor, just like a semi trailer. The LQ are not built like a "camper" but use residential cabinets, fixtures, stall showers, ect. A 36' overall would really only be 31' behind the truck and only wieghs 7500#.Remove the divders, install tie downs and a winch.build 2 short ramps ( the floor is only14" off the ground) and we are down the road with what we both want!We could even take the mules if we left the car home!has anyone seen this done and what say you about the idea? The wife loves it!

Trbomax, my buddy Tom did that this winter. He missed an aluminum '34 gooseneck by a couple hours for $2100.  He had to pass on several slants, as they were only 6' interior width. Settled for a 30' x 7'(deck space 22 x 7, with 8' upper) steel stock trailer For $1200. He filled in the upper open sides, removed the center gate and relocated it to the left side (so we could open the car door to get out) cut the rear livestock gate out. We widened the rear and put in a drive on ramp gate. Wired it for 110 lighting along with 12v leds and work lamps. Put in a reciver hitch in the frt center for plugging a 9000 lb winch, welded tie downs every 5' down the sides, and put in 6 D ring tie downs in the floor.

Aluminum would have been much better, but he needed one quick and cheap

Thats what I'm talking about! The 4 horse LQ trailers typically have a 21' x 84" cargo bay with a sealed wall with a door going forward to the LQ.

That first aluminum trailer had the living qrts up frt also. Damn shame he missed that one, it had a tree scrape up high down the side and the tires were iffy.  This one we put in a breaker box and also wired in pleanty of power outlets inside and out. He's going to put in a kingsize air mattress upstairs. Later a generator mounted under the gooseneck and a small compresser.

The rear gate was pretty heavy, but he found a trailer parts place that had a garage type double spring door set up. One hand open/ shut now.

They really work out well for us car guys, could have used this years ago. Trying to get some of these old hulks back to town without all the parts falling off here and there, tarps ripping off in thecwind etc. Sure is cheaper to convert to a toy hauler/ camper than buying one set up as such.

You will definitely enjoy it.

That is a cool idea.  Your buddy did a nice job on his.
Spending time with my grandkids gets in the way of finishing my car but I don't regret it!

I just got off the phone with the lady that has one in sandusky mi for sale. Its an 09,still under warrenty and I wouldnt have to modify anything in the horse area because the stud divider and tack rack are just held in with pins.Pull the pins and take it out, instant cargo box!
