Title: '28 headlights
Post by: trbomax on March 21, 2014, 08:21:08 PM
I am starting a new topic for this discussion.I want to apoligise for hijacking the "got piggy" thread with my headlight discussion.

I called aaa this morning and talked to eddie, who wanted a pic of my reflecter with a measurement on it.He said that 7.5" seemed too small for a 28 unit. I tod him it came on the car in 1958 when I got it and had all the bowtie emblems on it too. Anywhay, here is what I sent him.havent heard back yet but will keep all informed.

I'm interested in some for my headlights too. The price is a lot better than the local plater!

Are your lenses clear?

The lenses are 8-11/16" dia clear glass.

Here are the pics of what I did.  I started with the original reflectors and cut the middle out of them.  Then attached the new reflectors to the old reflector rims with 4-40 screws as shown.  Everything fit right back in the original headlight buckets.  They measure 8 1/2" across.

Does haveing the amber bulb in the reflecter mess with the light pattern? I am going to do it your way unless eddie comes up with a bolt in reflecter. What did you do with the bayonett connecter on the back of the houseing where the wireing comes thru?I was thinking hole saw that out and put in a rubber grommet, then run all 3 wires inside a piece of ss braided hose,do the same in the fender with a larger grommet that a 3 prong plug would fit thru.

I have seen these with the amber bulb on cars but never asked if it affected the light pattern,  I pried the connector off of the housing (carefully) with a screwdriver. Right now I have a rubber grommet in there but I haven't mounted them on the car yet.  I plan to get some type of conduit and seal it to the housing and then run the wires to the grill.

Thats what I was talking about with the houseing. If you have a Parker or AeroQuip store close by, they have rubber hydraulic hose with a stainless steel braid over it. i was going to get a couple pieces that fit the grommet and just run the wires inside it. Put a couple zip ties on the inside so id doesnt fall thru. The 3 wires should fit nicely inside a #4 hose.

Speedway has a pair of wire conduit with pretty good reviews for $34.99.  Might be cheaper the way you mentioned.

They look pretty nice, and reasonably priced as well.  Definitely something to consider.

With those fittings on the ends, they are BETTER than what I was going to do! You guys sure know how to spend other peoples money!

I ordered the reflecter kits this morning. He said 7 -10 days because he did not have them in stock, which is OK because I dont have a running car to put them on anyway! Now I either need to find some aluminum bezels that dont have holes in them like mine do,or see if my kid can tig weld mine up.

You know what also work for a conduit is the flexable stainless hot or cold water supply line from you local hardware store and you can get them in lengths. I have used them for wire conduit in doors, headlights and assorted other places in autos.

Yes...or a flexible line from your sink sprayer.  Ours is nice and shiny.  Wonder if the missus will miss it?  :)

That would be very cost effective too. I even have a few of those in my plumbing maintanence cabinet!

I find that when someone these days tells you 7 to 10 days you need to double it to be in the ballpark  :-[

I picked up the headlight parts at the post office this morning. They were well packaged and included all parts needed for install on the stock houseings. They fit in the rings well, but I can see that I am going to have to replace the 86 yr old lense glass for best performance! The reflecters are about 1/16" smaller OD than stock so small flat washers will be reqd if I use the stock holes. The outside retainer ring could be just a bit larger to make it easier, but we know they were not made specifically for our headlights, but rather adapted from something else so all things considered, they are fine. I would recommend this product to anyone .

Trbomax, glad this worked out for you.  I hope to have my wiring far enough along so I can try mine out in the next couple of weeks.
