Title: Great Bend Airfest
Post by: sammons on September 10, 2015, 11:00:53 AM
It's that time of year again for the WW2 Fly-In and the schedual is out for Sept 18-20. Great Bend was established as a B-29 Training Base during WW2. I'm trying to get my gang together for the show. Scheduled to appear this year, B-29 FiFi, B-25 Mitchell, A-26, C-47, C-45, three P-51's, F4U Corsair and others. I can't believe the ride along costs this year, the B-29 ranges from $595-1595 and a 30 min ride in the Corsair is only $2495. :o  I remember way back when if you got there in time when they took the media up upon arrival to the show you could ride for free!  ;D I was offered to ride along on FiFi from Garden City to Louisiana,  but I couldn't think how i'd get back. :-[  I kick myself in the butt still on that one. :-\

Just got done watching them fire all the engines on Doc (B-29), in Wichita. (On local live news). First time in 60 years! Doc was rescued out of the China Lake facility in Cali. some years back, moved to Wichita where it was originally built (along with 1,600 others) 15yrs and 300,000 hrs of restoration. Doc was just gleaming in the Kansas morning sun. ;D  Hopefully will be airborne again soon, I think this year yet.

News cast tonight had an interview with one of the original Rosie the Riviter gals and others that originally worked the line at Boeing and helped with this restoration.

pic's then and now.

Had a great day at Airfest. Disapointed that there wasn't any old hotrods on the apron this year. :-\ The weather was perfect and there were a lot of warbirds in the air. I only seen one mishap,  late 30's trainer touched the brakes too hard upon landing and briefly nosed it down, shattering the ends off the prop. We felt obligated to make some donations to help offset the cost of a replacement prop. I bet the beer was on him lastnight at the hanger dance! ;D He'll probably not live that down for a while. They are headed down by FATnLOW's tomorrow (Davis Feild, Muskogee)

Just a few pics
