Well it's been an interesting week and a half. I had a power surge that decided to wipe out my router and computer mother board and have only been able to go on line with my phone on a limited basis. I was running an old Windows XP operating system on an 6 year old computer that I built myself so I decided that this was a good opportunity to do an upgrade and have just finished building a new computer with components that I purchased from Newegge. I just finished loading the software and installed a now router and I think I'm now pretty much good to go. It's going to be good to be back on the Rusty Bowtie again on a regular basis.I've been trying to keep up with what you guys were doing but I have not been able to log on on a regular basis so I'll have a lot of reading to do. ;)

Wish I knew about your situation, I have a collection of desktop parts and a couple of complete towers (free) I put together from parts. Been collecting Windows Vista COA's since XP support ended.
FYI: Windows 7 and Window 7 Pro (32 or 64 bit) can be downloaded free from Microsoft..just need the COA to activate. Built the PC I'm on now from parts - it had a Windows 7 COA on it.
Here is a kit (link) that comes in handy for reading/salvaging data on IDE & SATA drives 3.5 and 2.5, just connect the power supply and plug in the hard drive externally - just like a thumb drive...got to have the set:

Thanks for the offer Ed...I decided to go with a solid state hard drive and I do a lot of graphics work so I now have 8 gig of memory and a state of the art graphic accelerator. I had a sata drive enclosure that I was using for back up so I was able to put my old drive into that and save all of my files...Just glad to be up and running.

Moose I guess after many hours of twinking and loading the new system you will purchase a Surge Protector.Its like life insurance ,no idea when your going to need it Mooseman

Believe it or not I had everything plugged into an expensive and state of the art surge protector and the motherboard and router still fried. The only thing that survived was my laser printer thank goodness. Maybe I need a surge protector to protect the surge protector. ;D I did install a new one of those just in case.

Sounds like whatever hit your place went through GROUND in that case a surge protector would be useless. I think you should count yourself lucky. I have a friend that,thats what happened to him It blew everything in his house including the wiring and panels in his house freezer dryer computers everything.although hydro came good for everything crazy ah
