Title: Anyone have a cheap non air worthy airplane for sale?
Post by: EDNY on June 06, 2014, 03:10:44 PM
I think the heat is getting to me, never flew a plane, did jump out of them in the Army..but I was thinking about buying a "small non air worthy airplane" as lawn art.  I live in the country so I have the room   :o :o :o :o

Where would someone locate a very small unit ie without engine, instrumentation, seats etc?  I bet the grandkids would like that better than a swing set!

What got me thinking is that I recently saw a couple of Canadians heading north with two old small planes (in parts) on a snowmobile trailer.

My thoughts are to head to a small local airport that has those type of planes being serviced and flying out of there.  Ask around the repair shops, ask if you can put up a wanted sign on the building bulletin board.

Advertise in yourl ocal paper if anybody has an old junker plane for sale.....definitely would want one seat for kids to sit in and dream.

They are out there, ya just have to find one, WITH WINGS .

A friend here was building a single wing plane. He got the frame done then quit. i don't know where it went but I bet you could build a yard art plane from electrical conduit and skin it with steel roofing. Corrugated would make it look like a Ford Tri-Motor. I have one wheel and tire I'll donate. ;D

I was kinda hoping there might be a forum for old plane barn finds ;D

Maybe I should start one called "RustyCessna.com"   ::)

Many years ago a friend bought a Piper Air Coupe. It had split rear windows like a '40 Ford. Other plane owners warned him that it was one of the least flyable planes ever built. He owned some very fast dirt bikes and claimed that the plane couldn't fall any faster that he had crashed on his 510 MACO, but he never flew the plane. ;D I remember an WWII airplane graveyard that we used to drive by near Dagget, CA. Thousands of shinny aluminum war planes of all sizes stretching for miles across the Mojave Desert. I'll take a P-38 please.

Jerermy Clarkson from the 'Top Gear' TV show has a mid sized plane sitting in his front yard. Its damn cool, but maybe a little bigger than your plans. Im sure theres one like your thinking, just waiting to find a new home. If not, it wouldnt be to hard to build one. Id buy a balsa wood model kit, then scale up the plans. Once built and painted, it would easily appear to be real.

I'm sure a visit to a small airport will get me going ..haven't made the stop yet. Initially was just looking for a forum to get an idea of what to expect as I travel. BTW: My son is a state trooper.
