Title: New Tool Review
Post by: TFoch on February 06, 2021, 07:01:23 PM: I've been cleaning out some leftover tools that my Dad had in my shop. It's time to purge and sell tools I'll never use. That being said, the money I get I'm reinvesting into tools I want to play around with during my retirement. The first tool I bought is a Woodward Fab Throatless Hand Shear. It is part number SPHS10 and has a 10" blade length. It cuts up to 3/16" steel and 1/8" aluminum. It also has a round shear area that can cut up to 3/8" diameter steel. Cost through Amazon was $179 with free shipping. Their most popular is an 8" blade length for $139 but it was out of stock so for $40 more I ordered the 10" model.

I had a Harbor Freight throatless shear but it was a piece of crap and wouldn't cut the thickness I wanted. Sold it.

I'm happy with this one so far. I mounted it on a bench grinder stand I bought at Harbor Freight.

Post by: TFoch on February 06, 2021, 07:57:03 PM: I did play around with it and you can cut an outside radius on sheet steel. I will have to anchor mine to the floor if I want to cut the thicker stuff. The long handle does make it cut easier.

Post by: EDNY on February 06, 2021, 08:05:25 PM: I just ordered the 12' unit..it was only $20 more at Summit. Summit said the 10" was on back order and the 12" was in stock ready for shipment. Glad you posted this..I almost bought the Harbor Freight unit last week...and was considering one for a long time.

Post by: TFoch on February 06, 2021, 08:12:38 PM: Harbor Freight list theirs as cutting 16 gauge (.060 thick) but it struggled doing that. The quality was awful and the blades were soft. The Woodward Fab quality is far better.

Post by: EDNY on February 06, 2021, 08:13:45 PM: I have the Eastwood shrinker/stretcher set and also have the Eastwood metal bender which I do use to make 90 degree bends (for steel targets) on 5/16+ steel. I can make the bends without bolting the bender down.

Post by: TFoch on February 06, 2021, 08:30:35 PM: This one caught my eye in the Woodward Fab catalog that came with my shear. Fits in a shop press. 12 inches wide and will bend 14 gauge steel (.078") or 1/8" aluminum. Not cheap at $229 but if you need to bend some thick stuff pretty cool.

Post by: EDNY on February 15, 2021, 09:25:18 AM: My shear arrived...mounted it to one of my moveable welding tables...cut some 3/8" round stock easily. Did some 1/16" plate...like cutting paper.
