Title: cutting up a ford coupe
Post by: ghost28 on September 04, 2015, 08:32:25 AM
I have a few hours in the top conversion. I first cut 3.5 inches and reinstalled the door tops, then removed the top with a single cut through all pillars then with the top off I could measure and mark exactly the 3.5 inches on all the pillars, and back sheet metal. Now to put the top back on and adjust for any guffaws.  ::)

Looking good, Ghost, you'll have that together by the end of the weekend and still have time to barbeque!!
Ghost, can you give me the insert measurements on that Furd? It could be a jumping off point for my Chevy........it couldn't hurt :o

Sure thing Chopper.  It's 39 inches across the front, 40 inches across the back, and 40 inches front to back. Give or take a silly centimeter.

I got the top back on the ford all lined up, and tacked down real good. Tomorrow I will finish welding all the areas, and start the grinding process. I love it when they fall in place.

Thanks guys.  I don't know why, but I am in my element when I am working on a old car. and as sammons said it looks like fun . It is.  The top and all the garnish trim is cut, welded, and ground. Now I am gonna take the body and get the frame ready for boxing, and suspension.

Ghost i'm really looking forward to more pic's this evening (hint hint ;) ) Those straight drops are really fun and quick. I sure miss doing them.

What is he, or you going to do on the inner structure, front posts etc?

Yes..those Models A are a fun  chop project ...easy and you gain such a good  look in a short amount of time. A whole lot easier than the  37-38-39  chops that I have done

The inner structure on the a pillars on ford coupes is all steel and easy to mount everything back to original, on the b pillars and around the rear window there is wood, but mostly it's for window garnish trim mounting. I cut through the wood took a section out and just pinned it back together.

FAT N LOW I know what you mean. The hardes cuts I have done was a 37 dodge 4 door sedan, and a 51 merc 4 door sedan. YIKES

Sorry Ghost, I've been staring at my chevys too long. ::) I thought model A's had wood in the A pillar. The last one I did was a '32 Ford, I knew it was steel.lol. I've never done a 4dr sedan, I bet that is alot of welding, time time time.  ;D

A friend had the nicest '30-'31 A cope body I have seen in a long time. He took it to a guy to chop it. Then he decided he wanted suicide doors (I don't know why) and it went horribly wrong from there. :(

Yeah sometimes you can take them to far. Maybe a hidden hinge kit for a street rodded style, or even insetting the doors on a model A, but that's about it.

What I've seen out of suicide doors they make it hard to enter and exit the vehicle. But they do look good.

The chevy truck is wired except a few minor details, and the furd is stripped down to the bare frame. I squared up the frame then cut and installed a new spreader bar across the front frame horns, then I set and welded up the frame horn boxing plates, and new cross member for the transverse spring. Today I trimmed and tacked in place the remainder of the boxing plates. I will try to get them welded and ground before the weekend.  Picture to follow.

It's amazing how a model A frame will twist, but after it's boxed they become real solid. We got the stainless triangulated rear suspension ordered.

I decided to mock up the 57 chevy rear axle under the model A frame even though I haven't rec'd the triangulated set yet. I set the axle where I wanted it pinion angle, and ride height. Then I lowered the frame into position and squared it with the axle. I tacked a couple of long bolts to the axle housing and threaded bolts on both sides of the mounting area so I can adjust the frame to axle height and then lock it down. Now it's time to wait for the parts.

Mounted up the 4 link, and set up the fake shock structures so I could drill the mounting holes. It was a good day. I hope the open door garage weather sticks around for awhile.

Lookin good man, wish I had your energy!  ;)  I don't know why so many people complain about '55-'64 rear ends. Sure i've had my share of sheerd axels, but a quick easy fix. Usually due to high rpm, side step the clutch. Other than that.... I like them and gear changes are cheaper than the 9" Ford by far.

Thanks Sammons. the energy comes and goes so I make use of it when it's with me.
I like the early chevy axles also, and have a chance to buy a 411 complete axle if I can get the price down a bit.
I got most of the parts installed for the front suspension on the ford coupe, and I am waiting for the master cylinder and booster for under the floor before I mount the engine and trans.

Post by: ghost28 on December 22, 2015, 06:26:07 PM
I still have the ford in the shop, but am getting some thing done on it. The master cylinder booster, and floor pedal are mounted, engine and trans mounts have been installed, and I have been running all the brake lines with the proportioning valves and pressure adjuster are in place. I am waiting for a couple of front brake line mounts so I can bleed the system and check for leaks,  the steering box, drag link, and collumn are coming to finish up my part and get the body on the chassis for transport. Unless he decides he want to go further with me.

Braking is completed and works great, the steering box is mounted. With the engine set back so It can run a radiator I had to trim out the firewall enough to clear the valve covers, and distributor. All this will be covered with  custom work done to the firewall. Well the body is back on the chassis and all the bolt down holes lined up just great. I did not step the frame because the owner and myself wanted the look of a traditional highboy build.
 Have a look guys.

Lookin good Ghost. What did you use for your firewall set back insert, or did you bend it up?  Looks nice.

A young friend of mine bought a '27 Ford roadster body and wants me to do some welding and fab work on it this spring. I hope I can, says he is in no hurry.

That's a nice looking roadster body. I think it would be fun to help him with it. The firewall plug was something I had laying around, not even sure where it came from, but it fit the build.

I have been so busy playing with my Buick I thought I had better get some things done on this little Model A, actually I have been working on both. I finished up the steering and decided to try to install some block huggers. I had to do a little grinding on the vega box mounts, and angle cut the header collector on the driver side, but I got them to fit along with the steering shafts and knuckles. This car will be fenderless, and he had the shock mounts but they weren't the headlight mount style, I found these neat little items that connect to the top of the shock mount for the headlights stems to bolt to.

In the process of working on the ford coupewhich is going well. I have taken on a rather rusted 31 ford roadster body. Here is one of three of the patching panels I have been installing, along with repairing the trunk edges of the body that were smashed flat, and then modifying a 36 ford dash and installing it in the roadster.

LOL Your not to far off the mark, Monday through friday my wife is still watching our 3 year old grandaughters which I love tremendously, but they are three and full of life. I don't know how she does it. My sanity saving is my shop and hobby during the week and staying out of her way. Thanks guys. I really like the looks of that 36 dash also.

I scrubbed down the CHEVY engine for the ford, and he wanted it white. I started putting tthe dress up stuff on it. I guess it don't look to bad after all, but it will be a bear to keep clean even with the ceramic engine paint.

I remember back in the mid 60's dad had a buddy that had an old coupe that had the White firewall and motor.   My old '23 T had a bright Yellow 400 Pontiac and White headers. The headers stayed pretty good but the heat above them always turned the head ports Yellow to Brown.  :-\

I got the chevy engine fired up in the 31 model A coupe it runs great, but the gear drive I installed is the cross cut gear style, and noisey. He wants everyone to here him coming so with glass packs , and a noisey fan to go along with the gear drive he will be noticed. I still would like to get the proper fuel line, and radiator hoses before he takes it to Wyoming this weekend. On another project the 31 ford roadster is coming along, I got both doors mounted, hinged, and alighned. I'm also starting to replace both wheel tubs all this has to work around a 32 frame.

After the coupe leaves I am getting a chevy project in next, it's a 35 master sedan 2 door I will keep you guys informed with lots of pictures.

Ghost you have been busy!  My buddy Shane traded the stock 48 ford coupe he had for a couple trailer loads of Model A's last week. Sounds like 2 tudor sedans 1 coupe and extra cowls/parts. He still has one trailer load to go. He gave me a heads up on a '60 Elcamino today. Sounds like almost rust free apart and on a rotisary with a 500c.i. Caddy motor combo for it. I just happen to know the guy who has it.  ;)  The price was really cheap if he heard him correct. He is trying to get the money up for one last Pikes Peak car/run.
