Title: SBC motor mounting distance spread
Post by: EDNY on August 17, 2014, 09:40:43 PM
I'm thinking the center to center distance of SBC frames mounts might vary depending on motor (block) mount designs. Just pulled the 305 out of my sons 37 sedan and need to redo them. They are at slightly different heights ???. The 305 had really thick motor mounts bolted to the block, I want to use the thinner style on the new engine that will lower it.

Whoever hog'd in the mounts used a spacer on the passenger side to move the mount inward. If I use the shorter mounts, the spacer shouldn't be needed.

I do have an empty SBC mock-up block and empty 700R4 for driveline setup. Just wondering if there might be a reference site with "eye to eye" measurements for the different thickness motor mounts?

Ed I ran down to the shop and measured mine. Center to center is 16.5" on it, don't know the style of motor mount you are using, so here is a pic of my style mount. My bolts slide right in (easy) when I set the motor in.

Sammons...thanks for the response...I'll get out there later an take a pic of the two different motor mounts.

BTW: If you are using a C3 chassis I think the engine has a substantial offset to the passenger side.  Just mention this in case you don't want the offset.

Attached a pic of the mounts..the one on the right was on the engine, hole center is approx 2-1/4"+ from base.

The mount on the left is the one I want to use to lower the engine, hole center is approx 1-5/8" from base.

Both mounts have the inter-locking safety system.

The spread on the current frame mounts is 17" center to center.

Ed

BTW: I need to lower the engine..was too high, trans was up against floor.

Ed, mine are the short  motor mounts ( 1 5/8" +).

Yep the Vette is offset 2" to the right. I am keeping offset, I presume the offset was for more room for 3 pedals.

FYI: I have extra C3 front suspension parts, control arms, spindles, rotors, caliper, power steering etc (rear suspension gone)

Good to know. Right now I'm still looking for a decent price on clutch/brake pedal assy, and later a power steering ram. Mine was apparently cracked from a previous collision and broke off while turning the wheels last month, I ground it down and welded it up for now.   Thanks
