Title: looking for some suggestions
Post by: sedan1933 on March 09, 2015, 01:35:00 PM
This is one of our rarest cars a 1933 Chevrolet phaeton. According to dad there is only 4 or 5 known to exist right now. We do know where there is another one but no one is getting it anytime soon considering it is at the bottom of the St. Lawrence River. My dad would like this car to go to good museum because it is so rare. My question is does anyone know where to begin or the name of some museums that might possibly be interested in this. This car was build back in 1982 and has been used in a few weddings and I remember Sunday drives when I was a kid. So it has been driven its just not being driven and we feel it should go somewhere people can enjoy it like we have even if its just looking at it. Thank you

Can't help with the museum..but you probably know that my son and your neighbor is a water recovery diver?  Ice and open water.

I don't know if I know your son. I wouldn't even know where to begin to be able to get it out of the river or who to talk to about getting the rights to it. Probably wouldn't last long once it was pulled up anyway.

Yeah, and I swim like a submarine.
That is a beautiful car, and I would like to see it in person even in a museum would be OK.
I have friend that loans his 56 merc convertible out to few museums once in awhile.

You ever make it to New York you are more than welcome to stop in but if you do make sure you have a couple days to look. You would probably have fun looking through what we have. 40 years of collecting is a lot of stuff. We have cars in just about every stage you can think of. Anyone who has been here would most likely agree. The invitation is open to anyone that would like to take a look around and almost everything is for sale. Some of the buildings are enter at own risk being that they are so full.

ask your dad whats rarer a 1935 Chevrolet phaeton 217 built in USA or a 33 master series CA phaeton

We in Canada built 25 LHD for EXPORT and 40 RHD for export, we produced 0 for domestic Canada sales

Every once in a while a 33 fully restored MASTER SERIES CA phaeton appears on ebay USA..   they sell for $30---50,000 depending on condition.

There is a guy handle JAWS33 always looking for 33 master phaeton parts on the VCCA CHAT.

I believe your father has a 1933 Chevrolet STANDARD SERIES CC PHAETON that was only built in Australia by HOLDEN BODY and no where else.

He probably does know Kevin. He is the town supervisor right now and he ran the machine shop for years with dad and after dad retired from it.

I know of a 1935 Phaeton for sale if anyone is interested.  It needs a complete restoration - wood and all, but it is a mostly complete, original car.  It is a left hand drive too!  I think the guy wants around $9-10K.  Very rare car but it will take a lot to restore it.  Needs to go to someone much younger than me!  :)

LIKE YOU SAY WILL TAKE A LOT TO RESTORE IT AND THEREIN LIES THE PROBLEM, COST OF RESTORATION WOULD WILDLY EXCEED THE PRICE THAT COULD BE RE-COUPED, UNLESS THE OWNER WAS ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH 75% OF THE WORK.

A REPLACEMENT WOOD KIT I THINK IS AROUND $6000 TO 9000.

I would think the quality of whats there would be a huge deciding factor.

Here's some photos of the 1935 LHD Phaeton - pretty rare but pretty rough.  It has had inside storage for the last 15-20 years.  Sorry the pictures are so dark.  The car is stored in a barn.

Yep, definitely needs a young and talented person to take this on.  Some very serious work required here!

Man I would love to have that car, but you are never to old to start a project, just to old to finish them sometimes. It still would be fun to take on.

Believe it or not that car is better than some of the stuff we have to start with. We can do most of the work ourselves. If I had the wood patterns to go by I could also build all the wood once my equipment gets set up. For me I couldn't take on that we have enough cars to finish as it is but would be a nice car. That would be one I wouldn't sell when it was done I would keep it and drive it. I have lots of time to work on them but when you have 80 cars you cant buy any more or you wont finish the ones you already have.

That car doesn't look so bad to me. And the price doesn't seem crazy either. Some people are putting that price tag on absolute junk.
