Oil cooler heat load
« on: October 30, 2013, 11:01:10 PM »
The bbc blower motor I'm going to use in the 28 currently resides in my drag boat. It has a 16 qt Milodon lube system with a full floe oil over water cooler. When I put it in the car I want to retain the oil cooler feature, but of course it will have to be air over. This will be easy to do as I have a rather large 14" x 30" space below the rad where it can go,and there is even room for an electric fan (pull thru). Ive read somewhere that properly sized oil coolers will reduce the cooling load on the rad by 10%.If this is true , it would be great becausethe 28 shell is small and I'm sure that whatever I can squeeze in there will probably be marginal for this motor. Does anyone have any real time experience with this? In the boat cooling was not an issue because I had the whole lake,so I dont really knowhow much heat the oil cooler pulled off. I'm open to opinions/sugestions as well.

If you drop the temperature of the oil it will definitely drop the over all temperature of the engine. I would guess how much depends on the oil capacity of the engine and as you said the size of the oil cooler.
Too soon we get old too late we get smart. One out of two ain’t bad 8)

Controling oil temp is the real problem. It has to go thru the cooler. With an air over cooler you have some control because the fan can be controlled with a thermostat. Ideally the oil and water would stabilize at around 195 *. Over cooling the oil is a bad thing. In the boats there was no way to regulate the oil temp, and water temp was controlled with restricter discs. To keep the oil temp as stabil as possible we ran the huge 16 qt pan because with mass came stability. I have a hyd oil cooler from a fork truck that I guess I can start with. Its about 12 x 16 and 3" thick. In my experience, blower motors have heat management issues, however my experience is limited to circle and drag boat applications where the motor is always on boost and running at 6000 rpm plus. The motor I'm going to use will have to be de tuned for a car.It ran at 16 lbs boost and had a very steep torque curve. They didnt run very long either,20 hrs was an OLD motor and a grenade!I would think that slowing the blower down to around 6 lbs max would make more sense. I have to say that makeing all of this work will be more fun than the rest of the build!
