Title: 27 p/u
Post by: billy on February 09, 2013, 05:58:39 PM
ford 302 , C6 3 speed
9"rear (3.00 gear installed)
the original donor(freebee) engine pooped the bed so i bought a reconditioned long block from checker.
this i basically a new engine with 1 oil change under it's belt.
i installed those bombproof motor mounts and the reversed corvair box yesterday.
this is my daily driver.
averaging 20 city 26 hwy mpg
front axle 64 f-100
12x2 juice brakes all around.
i'll be tinkering with this thing for the rest of my life

because of the shorter pitman arm.
it is a little harder to turn the wheel.
but with the previous setup
i had a bit of bumpsteer and if i locked the brakes up it would pull to the right.
yesterday i got it up to about 50 mph
let go of the wheel
and stomped the brakes
no pull and it stopped just fine.
those 12x2" juice brakes work just fine on a dinky lightweight rig like this.

Post by: billy on February 11, 2013, 04:14:28 PM
yesterday i noticed my tranny hanging down more than it should.
turns out
when the motor mount broke.
it cracked my tranny mount as well.
i just walked in from fixing it.
ok
now i am done.*

*till next time. ;)

UPDATE
this time SPEEDWAY sent me 2 passenger side headers.
i will NEVER give that company a DIME again as long as i live.
from now on i will use those pretty catalogs they keep sending me for ideas for parts.
and then rush out and buy from SOMEBODY ELSE!!!!!!!!!
Title: Re: 27 p/u
Post by: themoose on February 15, 2013, 03:46:08 PM
Billy

You should tell Speedway that you want the correct header sent next day air at their expense to cover your aggravation and time to re-box and ship the incorrect back to them.

Oh Billy give em another chance. They usualluy do right by me if they screw up, it's too bad you didn't find out soon enough and that this falls on a holiday weekend. On  another note what did ya do with that old chevy roof cap i gave ya awhile back? Saving it for your next build....John

Title: Re: 27 p/u
Post by: billy on February 16, 2013, 08:40:48 AM

yet another update.
after i stopped being so mad i was speaking in tongues.
i sent this email and also speedways response.
BTW that shipping is $53
hello MR Scranton.

is there a way you could cut me some kind of deal on these headers or something.?

these headers order mixups cost me a lot of time and that means they cost me money.

i am seriously considering never ordering anything from SPEEDWAY again.

i simply dont trust the company to send me what i pay for in a timely manner.

regards

William Hedges

William-

I provided my supervisors your words of disappointment regarding the matter regarding your headers. He refunded your shipping cost from original order for your trouble.

$53.00 is a pretty good adjustment. Did they send out the correct header yet?

Yeah Old speedway has been around a long time with knowlegable staff, and the continue to give good service even with the few problems they have. I am glad you are getting the new headers in time for you car club romp. Have a blast.....John

update
the drivers side header should be here today.
after installing the one i realized that the doors wouldnt open with the extensions installed.
so i unbolted the body mounts and jacked the cab up 2 inches.

it didnt really change the look any.
luckily i have slack in my brake lines and wiring.
the steering column slid on the heim joint so that wasnt an issue either.
i dont want to jinx myself but
it looks like it just might work.

with the under the truck exhaust i hated the drone noise.
i installed those 26" headers with the built in mufflers this morning.
it is a bit louder but not bad.
best though.
that drone is gone and i am not getting gassed from that leaky exhaust

kingpin update
i got me some oversized pins and i am glad i did.
the previous pins and bushings were installed 3000 miles ago with the bushings upside down.
thus no lubrication.
the spindles and axle holes were wallered out in an  egg shape.
i had to machine down the parts to make everything square and then use all the shims provided with the new pins just to do one side!
luckily we were able to scare up more shims and thus were able to finish the job.
right now my steering is VERY stiff.
so i am forced to go cruising around the neighborhood making lots and lots of turns breaking it all in before our vacation cruise.
boohoo poor lil ole me.
forced to drive my toy even more than usual.

Billy,
Keep it on all fours around those turns!  Glad it'll be safe for the trip.
Tom
Title: Re: 27 p/u
Post by: billy on May 06, 2013, 04:29:08 PM
ya know?
the steering didnt seem sloppy to me at all.
it didnt wander on a crowned road or anything like that.
i didnt get speed wobble either.
but when i jacked the tires off the ground and got a 6 and 12 o-clock hold of it
there was an unacceptable amount of movement
maybe a half inch or a little more.
my spindles are worn as well but with the new pins installed i got the movement down to a 8th of an inch.
Title: Re: 27 p/u
Post by: themoose on May 06, 2013, 07:46:40 PM
Billy

1/8 inch is pretty good. I'll bet the reason it was handling so well before despite the excessive play was  because you have a lot of positive caster. I'm glad to hear the new pins worked out good for you!

Cool truck. Ford in a Chevy! I like the Chevrolet tailgate.

I have had 8 small block fords and love the way they sound. But it takes more scrounging to get one put together. I still don't understand why they made so many parts that were almost the same.
