About twenty minutes ago I chased a pretty large mountain lion out of the Yard. It was by the shop where the dogs sleep. They were making quite a racket so I went to check. I'm so glad I had just put new batteries in the flashlight. It was only about 20 feet from me when I saw it. Thankfully it was going away. I'm going have to upgrade my outside lighting. It's way too dark out there.
It has turned up twice in the last month pictures from my trail cameras. They've always been around but their numbers are increasing partly due to California's overly restrictive hunting laws. The last two years it's been bear visits. All part of country living' I guess. :)

People in cities get raccoons & possums in the east messing with their garbage cans.
The bigger beasties......bears, wolves, lions are looking for food also. If you have food smells on your property , your going to get critters large and small. No idea on how you can counter the smell of garbage ?

Chipmunks and squirrels here, too. Very terrifying!! ;)

My nearest neighbors are 4 miles away but it's a subdivision with lot of trash and little pets. Loins, bears, and coyotes love it. We are just mostly between them and the mountain peaks behind us. I put in a bear-proof garbage container a couple of years ago. It doesn't mask the smell though. There are also tons of rabbits, ground squirrels, feral horses around and a few deer. They are all on a cougar's menu. I'll make sure the dogs are pinned up before dark and curtail my moonlight strolls. ;D This one appeared to be in it's prime. The old hungry one are the most dangerous. They eat anything, even old hot rodders. :o

coyote's, way to many, opossum, raccoons, skunks, ground and flying squirrels and a few stray cats which don't last long :)

They allow coyote hunting here and get paid.
You might want to bring your dogs in.

Since I live about 800 yards from Canada I get some critters that cross the border illegally that don't speak English (or French).

The dogs wore their noses out when I turned them loose this morning. They were a lot braver than they were last night. So was I! ;) There should always be things out there that could eat you. I puts things in perspective. :o

Woke up Sunday morning last month to a racket in the living room and went to investigate. Found a black squirrel running around. That's the second time and I can't figure how they get in, or why. No food to speak of. must be after my beer...

I've heard of a drunken chicken but not a drunken squirrel

We used to soak barley in buckets to feed the hogs. 10 gallons of fermented grain can make a pen of drunk 150 pound pigs both entertaining and scary. But they weren't in the house much. :)

Dang, those big cats are sneaky scary! Glad he didn't get you or your dogs. We had one come close to camp one night when we were fishing on the river. Heard him let out a yeea-owl, hair on my neck stood straight up and hollered for my buddy. We quickly got to the fire. Next morning we found he had taken a white tail doe about 50 yrds from us. He ate a little then covered it in leaves.

There have been sightings here in New Hampshire. My son said he saw one last summer behind his house. The Fish & Game Department claims the Eastern Cougar is extinct.

Maybe it's some western cougars that went to see the Fall colors. :) When California chanced their mountain lion and bear hunting laws Western Nevada was the recipient of their excess.

The one last week was about that size maybe just a little smaller. They are beautiful critters.

Ed, that article reads the same as what we went through here. The state said they did not exist here. We had a nasty deep snow storm back on new years eve '70. Closed everthing 3' on the level, huge drifts. We lived 500 yards from the river at that time and I remember the neighbors horses in the coral next door. The moutain lion got on back of the appaluosa (snow bound )and ate on his hind qtrs, as he stood. Groosome site looking at the hip bones!
The ranchers around here just shot them, they didn't exist ..no harm no foul. In the early 90's, they finally recognised their existance and put them on the no kill list ::)
